Yep, on a school night, unless you live close, it's just a bit too much effort.

I don't finish work until 5:30 and am then looking at probably 1-1.5hrs to get there. After the game it will take the usual age to get out of Ballymore, then the 1.5hr drive home and still have to front up to work the next day

OR

I can watch it on TV with the fire on, pants optional. No brainer. :D
I just vomited in my own mouth a bit

Is there a rule that you HAVE TO wear pants to a game?

'Pants optional' Should be one of the new experimental laws.

Disappointing crowd for the first game at Ballymore, but I'm guessing a large percentage of that is backlash against the QRU.

Rays crowd reported as 2000. Slightly disappointing. I know a lot of my chums couldn't make it for various reasons. Not sure how that compares to last years opening game.

I was at the game and was going to guess 1500-2000 but yes 2000 sounds about right as main stand fairly full and lot of people scattered around the game. Felt a reasonable crowd for atmosphere.

To be honest the whole start of the NRC again been fairly low key....slow burn one suggests....noted game announcer seemed to announce a lot more sponsor for Rays than they had last year so assume clubs starting to attract more sponsors which is at least a positive.

Anyone at RAMS vs EAGLES game to give a guess on crowd as heard was reasonable crowd there.

At the Rays game and enjoyed the two games immensely. Got there early so no one on the gate. Went back down to try and buy a season pass as was advertised and not able to. Maybe next game.
Abunch of local 17 and 18 yo schoolboys wandered down to watch their mates in the emerging game but were put off with the $20 entry fee. Maybe a good idea to give all schoolies free admission . They all got in but had to jump the fence to do it.
Loved the arvo timing sitting in the sun with a quiet beer.

I doubt it was very well promoted by the GCDRU. Saw one player from another club there, and he was with us. I'd say 10 or so Pirates players went and very few from other clubs. Not sure the game was even mentioned on the GCDRU fb page.

At least it was promoted at the TSS v Nudgee game on Saturday
Jason Gilmore, Gary Nucifora and Alex Mafi all spoke before the 1st XV game.

Probably only half the people at the QLD Country game as were at the 'Shark Tank'
(Mind you they didn't have to pay $15-$20) to get in)

Rd 1 numbers from Brett McKay in his summary article over on The Roar:

2698 up at Ballymore on Thursday night, about 2000 at Manly Oval, where North Harbour hosted the Sydney Stars, an estimated (and maybe generous) 1200 out at Merrylands for Greater Sydney versus NSW Country, and around 1700 at Bond University for the Queensland Country-Melbourne game.

I would love to blame the crowd on the QRU but think it is more than that, I don't think the true fans of the sport who are upset at the QRU would take a stance against up and coming players, they will show it during super rugby games.

The issue is there is almost zero coverage on any media.

How is it that the Sports director at CH9 in Brisbane is a former Wallaby but there is not even a 20 second mention that the defending premiers are starting the competition?

The ARU and especially the QRU need to hand deliver a copy of a story to do with Rugby to the station edited and ready to go in the news each night.

I read the Ipswich paper online and know how my local club is going but no mention of the NRC.

I think you will find the QRU pretty much do this already.. You can't force the media outlets to pick up the article or segment though.

RWC is also hurting coverage, rugby journalists are prioritising RWC coverage.
