Good to see Voges get rewarded with the vice captaincy after the mountain of runs he scored during the ashes.
Scarily, who is the real alternative though?

Massive leadership vacuum left by the retirements/dropping of Clarke, Rogers, Watson, Haddin.

The real worry is that so many of the new guys are there by default, next in line or on promise and not by shear weight of runs

Nathan Lyon would surely have to be an option. Most likely Voges is there until Dave Warner returns from injury.

I agree that Lyon is unlucky not to be the VC for this tour.

Warner was just announced as the new vice captain so Voges role is certainly only temporary.

There are certainly long term places in the team on offer for anyone who really stands up.

Warner, Smith, Starc and Lyon are really the only players who are cemented in the team right now.

Think it's a practical rather than honor appointment. And might even explain why he was even selected in the first place given the selectors must have suspected they would be dropping a few of those other guys in the near future.

Voges has plenty of captaincy experience. Has Lyon captained anyone at any level? For better or worse off-spinners don't get appointed very often.

I think there is a general avoidance of making a bowler the captain/vice-captain because it often perceived to cause the person to bowl themselves too much or too little.

Hard to say whether there is that much truth in the perception but that definitely seems to be the reason not many bowlers end up with a C next to their name.

Can you be the vice captain and the "southern cross song leader"?

I like the look of Fekete. Saw him bowl on a VERY flat AB Oval a couple of years ago and he was the only bowler (including some decent names) who was causing the batsmen troubles.

Looking at the list on Wikipedia it's almost a prerequisite.

Apparently Fekete bowled very well in the Australian A tour to India. Got some good reverse swing going.
