Maybe that's the start of proceedings, rather than kickoff. Finals tend to be preceded with a bit of a song and dance, right?

Maybe, but that'll be before. Pretty sure the kickoff is at 3am our time, which is 4pm in London.

You're right looks like 4:00pm is kick off. The Closing ceremony is only someone singing world in union then the hand over of the tournament to Japan. I think it starts at 3pm.

Not 50-50. 35-65ish.

All Blacks deserved favourites, but Australia still in with a really really good shot.

Can't agree with you, Highlander35.
I'm talking about 'mathematical probability', not the 'betting market'! There are two teams in the contest, either can (will) win, there can't (wont) be a draw, so we have a 50/50 chance of winning! We also have a 50/50 chance of coming second!

I know prime time is a bit earlier there. I've lived in the UK and a lot of big sporting events are played in the afternoon on weekends. I guess, when it gets to this time of the year it does start getting dark pretty early and so most people are indoors. But surely there wouldn't be any less people watching at 7 or 8pm over there, and that would allow a lot more people to watch down here!

The alickadoos didn't expect two SH teams to reach the final, OC. The time for the final was set aeons ago.

It's personal for me.

Mrs Funk is a Kiwi. The father in law is a mad golfer and All Blacks fan. I have had 4 years of the mongrel joyfully pointing out they are WC champions and that is all that matters.

My only response has been to send him a box of golf balls with the Wallabies Logo each year for his birthday.

Jfunk, I hope after this weekend, you will be in a position to obtain a couple of bulls testicles, paint or dye them black (if you can't get black ones), box and wrap them thoughtfully, and send them to him with your "fond regards"!

*Wallabies win with a Pocock field goal in the 85th minute after 28 phases starting from their 5m line*

tex: book me a ticket to Auckland, a Winnebago and a loud-hailer, I'm touring our new dominion!

Travel agent: sir...it's 4am.

tex: I said a fucken Winnebago and make it gold.

Well it would be fine for South Africa, but surely given history the chances of Australia or New Zealand making the final was always pretty high.

I just don't understand the motivation for a 4pm kick off. Surely it's not even perfectly ideal for European TV networks, given it clashes with all the soccer matches. Is it something to do with whatever agreement the RFU has with Twickenham residents/council?

In future the ARU and NZRU should throw their weight around a bit more over stuff like this IMO.

The UK seems to have more of a culture of playing afternoon games rather than night games.

The conditions are generally better as well which might play a reasonable part in the decision.

I'd be surprised if a union would be prepared to argue kick off times months in advance. Superstitions of it resulting in them crashing out would be too strong.

The reality of the difference in TV audiences is probably a few hundred thousand each for Australia and NZ given it would be early Sunday morning otherwise.

Strictly Come Dancing at 7, Doctor Who at 8.15.

UK FTA broadcast is rather rigid sometimes. They'll chew away viewers. I don't have the stats on hand, but basically whenever DW and RWC come up against each other, both suffer, DW forums quite vocal on that.

Presumably there'll be an hour at least of tina turner singing simply the best or chisel belting out working class man, some fireworks, Bill delivered by helicopter a parachutist getting tangled in something a few local juniors marching on the park, meatloaf forgetting the words and billy idol forgetting to bring a voltage adapter. I forgot up there kazaly and John Williamson singing true blue.

Surely the biggest motivator for kick off times for any major tournament is TV ratings. We certainly saw that in 2011. Why is 4pm such a better time than 7 or 8pm? I highly doubt it's because of Dr Who! Dr Who can be taped or delayed, sport needs to be watched live. In the afternoon it clashes with all the football/soccer across the country and in Europe (lets not forget the UK is not even the biggest rugby TV market in Europe).

I think the difference in ratings of 3am vs say 7am would probably be at least a million people in Australia. The final would have all the bandwagon support and is getting significant media coverage but most people who aren't at least casual rugby fans won't get up at 3am. They would get up at 6 or 7. I think this is a big deal for the ARU.

The Euro 16 soccer tournament in France is going to have all of its big finals played at 9pm! Yes, that's during their summer, but still - the timings would be done to maximise tv audiences. I just don't get it. As if weather has anything to do with it.

If it were to occur, who do we think will take the mantle of telling the kiwis "four more years"? I'd love to see Hooper put a big hit on causing a knock on in the 79th minute and giving a good gregan impersonation
