Have to admit, i think we'll be in for a very disappointing series here. After the Windies efforts on their home turf earlier this year and the fact that their stars have chosen BBL over test cricket makes for a sad state of affairs. But i'll still be watching and listening every test none the less!

None of the Big Bash players are current West Indies test players. I think their test team would be exactly the same regardless of whether Big Bash was happening at the same time or not.

Nathan Coulter-Nile called into the test squad in place of Mitchell Starc, but Pattinson likely to play in Starc's place. NCN is a fantastic fielder and has about the strongest throw from the outfield we've seen in Aussie cricket for many, many years. Will give a good show if he gets a game.

Coulter-Nile has been there or thereabouts for a couple of seasons now. He's played ODI cricket for Australia and toured with the Aussie team, so it's a decent enough call to bring him into the squad.

Only negative would be he hasn't played a game of first class cricket this season so no recent form at all. he must be bowling well in the nets.

The selectors clearly have a a queue and he's next up.

Not particularly worried as he won't be getting a game. Just replacing the masseur in the field

Yeah agree with that. He's had some bad luck with injuries that might otherwise have had him earlier in the queue. I do worry about Patto though and his injury history. He strikes me as being a bit brittle. Quality player when going though.

Strikes me as odd that Jackson Bird has been overlooked considering his recent form and previous performances in the baggy green.

He's the same age as Couter-Nile but has better FC and test statistics.

Does he fit the mould though? Is he a 6'3-6'8 player who can rip 140+km/hr balls consistently? Add on the rather poor batting and NCN's excellent fielding and you can understand (even if you disagree) why they've picked him.

Even so you'd think the selectors would prefer a bloke who has been bowling with the red ball. NCN hasn't played FC cricket since March.

It doesn't really make much sense to me but I guess it can't hurt having him run the drinks prior to maybe involving him in the ODI's.

It should hopefully be academic and he gets immediately sent to Shield cricket to build up some overs. I think the bloke is ready to play test cricket but he's admittedly short of a gallop right now.

Bird must be unlucky to miss the squad, but I did hear that Rod Marsh does want fast bowlers who consistently deliver around 140kph. I don't think Bird meets that requirement. Not to say he couldn't be as good (or better) than Boult as a medium fast swing bowler if given another chance.

I have to say that I'm not on board with the notion that a bloke has to be a certain speed to be picked. On that basis Glenn McGrath never would have played for Australia. You can be as fast you like but if you're spraying the ball around then it's not much good is it? I'm all for having an enforcer in the team who can bowl serious heat, but I don't want two other blokes exactly the same. An attack has to have balance and what we played in Adelaide got the mix pretty right I think. That said, Peter Siddle was told that (apparently) that he wouldn't get picked again unless his pace improved. I can't actually picture McDermott saying that, but anyway.

Looks like Neville will move up to 6 in the batting order.

What are Khwaja's odds of a return for the first test?

Not named in the squad for Hobart so not much chance. Back for Boxing Day.

Straight swap for Burns or Marsh, though I wouldn't mind seeing him go to opener and dropping Burns down to 5 to sort his technique out. Obviously he has the talent but on anything but flat pitches he's so vulnerable up top of the order at the moment

Still leaves SS at 3 though, and I reckon he's a better 4, so maybe Burns stays where he is.

does it matter? Pick me to open. WINDIES are currently 5 for 89 against a Cricket Australia XI attack including names such as Simon Milenko, Ryan Lees and James Bazely

There is that :)

Having said that it must be currently 100% humidty up here at the moment and the pitch is plenty green. Would be hooping around.

It's a very odd selection panel, who come up with very odd selections. On the basis of the past 12 months, nothing would surprise me any more on selections. When it suits them Shield runs/wickets mean a player has to be picked, when it doesn't suit them Shield performances are irrelevant.

Mark Waugh said last night on Fox that it was a "gut feeling" - and I suspect that this is how the current panel operates.

In regards the test series, my expectations would be that Australia will win relatively easily. WI bowlers will be competitive, but their batsmen won't have the technique or the temperament to build a long innings at test match level. I'd expect their bowlers to be defending small totals.
