How's this for a donk? Hitting the bush in the Victorian high country on Friday. I may have to get stringent with the packing as I've got to squeeze dinners into this somehow!

That's some rig mate, well played.

Next step (after fervent prayers for dry weather) is to start cutting weight and bulk.

The climbing I've set for myself will be fairly intense and after the quick shakedown ride I gave myself yesterday, I am expecting to have my jelly-legs splattered all over the high country. And that's before the rednecks in their 4WDs have their way with me.

Dehydrated meals, fo reelz. I use the Backcountry Cuisine ones they sell at BCF and Rays Outdoors etc. The bacon and eggs is rated.

Yeah for sure. I found a Tasmanian company called Strive who do that stuff. Hopefully it's reasonable... I say weight needs untying, and it does, but not at the expense of good food.

The difference is last year I was new to his patch as I had just started riding to work, this year I pushed through the colder months so I have been in his territory all year.

Colin is this your first year on his turf?

No this Magpie is a rogue. He has been drawing my blood for about 3 years like some sort of satanic vampire.

I have mastered a head bobbing hand waving dance as I ride in his/her turf to try and keep him/her at bay. I just have to make sure I don't veer into traffic as I carry out my evasion detail.

There is a Macca's on the corner were this beast lives and the crowds often gather to watch the fun as cyclists get attacked.

Great entertainment until someone gets hurt!

He sounds like a real prick, is swooping season still going? There was a bird that used to bomb cyclists on the bike path across the freeway from Garden City. He was legendary for his grudges, he swooped cyclists on a steep climb and there was no hiding. A mate at work who got me into cycling told me of his relief when he discovered the nutcase graduated to attacking cars, you can guess how it ended.

Had my first ever group ride today, with a mob called Perth Cycling IT Professionals. It went pretty well! To my amazement I didn't blow a gasket or get dropped, though I wasn't game enough to go with the faster group. Would definitely do it again and the ride they do around the Swan River and along the coast is beautiful.

Often thought about riding with a group but always thought it might be a "bridge too far"

I ride with a group of mates who don't have a "need for speed" preferring to amble.

How much faster did you ride with the group than your "general" average?

I reckon I averaged about 3kmh faster with the group, mainly because I had to push myself a bit harder than I normally would. I'm all about cadence when I ride and try to keep it consistent, but today I had to accelerate more than normal. The big thing was how much more I had to concentrate as opposed to riding by myself which I almost do on auto pilot.

You need to think of riding in the group from the perspective of the guy behind you but aim to be predictive for any changes in speed or direction from in front of you. I find in a group ride you use your brakes heaps more regularly than if you are solo or in a pair.
We had 12 in a group on Thursday that averaged 34km/hr for a 36km ride. It was probably a bit dangerous as riders started dropping off or stalling on hills etc. Plus the traffic at the moment is not very patient with holidays approaching.

Yep, agree with that. I reckon I'll get better as the weeks go on and I'll be able to read the road conditions and the pack a bit better. I had my hands on the levers the whole time the other day.

Better rider but it makes your driving suffer. Bad tailgating / drive like a taxidriver

Rode up Mt Coot-tha for the first time this morning. wasn't exactly what I would call fun and I almost vomited when I was nearing the top but it was a great sense of achievement to do it.
I took a trail on the way down and am pretty sure I won't be doing it again as the first 500m was pretty badly washed out from recent rain so more suited for mountain bikes rather than my cyclocross. Once I reached the graded tracks though it was a lot of fun.

No on a cyclocross bike. I did see a few mountain bikes on my trip up though. Hats off to those guys.,
