Did anyone think Channel 9's pestering of/chinwagging with Smith was inappropriate? It seemed to upset his concentration immediately before he lost his wicket. Are the bland, banal contributions from those wearing a mic in the field worth it?

I'm dead against it, especially at international level if we're thinking T20I's are fair dinkum. It's OK in the BBL because it's just entertainment really, but at the top level they should be letting the players focus on playing the game and not answering some inane question that a boofhead Ch. Nein commentator is asking them. I think it's pretty clear that CA still treats T20 as carnival cricket and the players seem to as well. I don't really have an issue with that, because it's just hit and giggle to me as well, but there will come a time when they'll have to make a decision and take it more seriously or not.

Australia has played 2 T20is in the last 415 days - they have to use these essentially meaningless games to get ready for the WC and try out some new players.

Ussie is on the plane. I really don't have a problem with trying out Lynn & Head to see if they can transfer their BBL form to the bigger stage.

Likewise Tait. It's worth knowing he's not the match winner he was. Richardson is a liability in the feild, Watto can still cut it at this level etc etc.

Should be more experimentation and that probably means more losses. Much like Cheik rotating during the Bled, their eye is on a much bigger prize

I agree with your logic.
But that's not the selectors logic.
Rod Marsh was quoted widely as saying the guys selected, deserved their position ahead of him.
He best quote was to say that he should talk to Marsh about he felt when was was dropped immediately after scoring that big century.

Maybe a Test selector is not necessarily the best person to select a 20T squad?

0/45 for Tait and 0/41 for Richardson. Ugly figures.

Tye and Hastings at least should come in for the two of them. Might want to Add another bowler to the mix too. Maybe GOAT in for Head, shift everybody up the order, then swap Boyce for another paceman at Sydney.

Not really. Cheika had a pretty good idea who was his best team and his selections were logical and well thought out.

No one could say that the cricket selections that we've seen in the past 12 months are either logical or well thought out. Even their public statements are contradictory and illogical.

Or maybe the current selection panel are the ones who need to be dropped?

The million page thread about the world cup squad selections shows not everyone agreed with you at the time. :D

As always, we can really only see how well they go retrospectively.

In a couple of months time this team might just be ODI world cup champs, T20i WC champs (hard to see it, but they are currently 2nd favorite for some bizarre reason) and #1 test team in the world (if they beat NZ). The selectors would have a case that they'd done a pretty good job.

They certainly got the CWC selections dead on. We dominated, apart from that fantastic game at Eden Park, and other than brouhaha over Clarke's selection (he shouldn't have played for mine) they got it bang on. The Ashes was a black mark because of the non-selections of Burns for the squad and Siddle in the tests, but these guys got right more than they get it wrong.

Hastings should definitely have started in place of either of Tait or Richardson, and although he had a game to forget against the Strikers, Abbott would be a better pick for the future than Tait. Was Siddle unavailable?

I'd agree with Ussie replacing Head, whom I am not convinced is the real deal, and if we need a spinner then Hoggy is the man.

As far as the selectors go, I think Blind Freddy would have done a better job for the first game.

Maxwell should be back for the next T20. I'd swap him directly for Head.

Agree that Hastings should play, Tye also wouldn't be a bad option to see if he's up to international cricket.

Shane Watson said openly on the news this morning that T20 was entertainment and it was difficult to take it seriously. I agree, which is why I don't think it should be played at international level at all.

The old excuse was that it paid the bills but the big bash might make that a bit redundant.

CA basically agree with you. We only played 1 T20i for all of 2015

Anyway, watching cause its better than tennis.

Watson getting a bit of swing early on. Lots of plays and misses. Amazing what a bit of moisture and cloud cover does - as the pitch looks as flat as ever.

Watched Roger last night, but can't cop Andy Murray's antics at all so am also on the cricket.

You're missing the best match of the men's comp thus far (& I'm a huge fan of both Roger & the Djoker). Last nights SF was pretty damn good, tonight's is epic.

Switched over and saw some good tennis until Raonic injured himself.

The cricket followed the path of one team treating it as entertainment and the other side as a sporting contest that they were desperate to win.
