Thoughts?

SUNCORP Stadium will host a $1.5 million world rugby extravaganza next year with Queensland’s premier sporting venue to become the home for an annual Brisbane 10s tournament.
New Zealand and Australia’s Super Rugby provinces are backing the concept, which could emerge as the sport’s second most prestigious tournament behind the Rugby World Cup.

I'm not convinced.

I like the idea but I don't like 10s. I don't see the point of it as it's halfway between 7s and 15s. Just a very loose 15s game to me.

But surely it'll have the exact same complaints as the Nines. Best players won't play and if they do they'll get injured. Current rugby players already play too many games and have a long season with the NRC now.

Also when can they host this? Good luck with the heat in Brisbane late January..

Mmmmmmm. Better not say anything, I will just add to my reputation as a naysayer.

How's the Singapore Tens going?

Concept good.

Scheduling? Hmmmm....

The fact that Duco want to host something after the "wild success" of the League Nines ignores completely the fact that they got (supposedly) 70,000 over two days into a ground with a capacity of 50,000 means they're approximately 30,000 people short of "wild success" by any mathematical standard.

I don't mind 10s. I don't mind that Suncorp will be the venue because it looks like a top notch stadium.

But WHEN the hell are they going to play it? Who among the playing group of each franchise is going to back it? How is it going to benefit rugby, beyond putting money in the QLD state government's coffers?

Singapore is a poor comparison - that was a fucking disaster due to the pitch, the weather conditions, and the obvious half-arsed approach of some tightwad organisers in a market with no connection.

This would be better, I'm just not sure how.

I'd like to see it have a go before condemning it, so at this stage I am a supporter.

Assume teams will comprise 5 forwards and 5 backs, playing more like full 15s rugby than 7s. Probably more opportunity for some bigger, but mobile forwards to participate. Proper front rows, almost? One giraffe in the second row alongside a back rower.

I'd expect to see Super standard players if the concept takes off, but no Wallabies involved.

Maybe during the mid-year test window? I presume it would be all over in one weekend. Would then need to keep it apart from the Brisbane test, but it might work otherwise.

January in Brisbane? Tell 'em they're dreaming ;)

I thought about that, too, but not sure the ARU would back a concept that dilutes Test-Rugby-As-A-Carnival attention. Particularly as it is one of the few weekends they get live FTA and all rugby fans watching one team rather than drifting in and out of Super Rugby.

I suppose it would guarantee the squads are weaker too, with the top 30 players from each nation off at Test duty. However, January might just have the same effect with player workload etc.

There is a social Tens comp that runs in conjunction with the Hong Kong Sevens.

It's a bit of fun, some big (retired) names have played in it over the years, including the Late Lomu.

Interesting to note that the Loig Nines teams occasionally include retired players.

Maybe something like the HK tournament could be worth trying? Nothing too serious, but a good and interesting exhibition of open running rugby?

I doubt very much if we'll see Carter, Beale, Folau et al at this tournament as suggested, their employers won't take further risk of injury on top of the pre-season trials. But, for fringe members of Super squads this should be a wonderful opportunity to parade their skills.

The article is just wild speculation, sounds like it's been penned by a promoter (second biggest tournament behind the World Cup??). I'll withold judgement until I see some actual details.

Could be a good pre-season concept, doubt it will really inspire the masses to fill Suncorp though. You won't see the star players, will just be a chance for fringe guys to make a run at a starting spot.

I think to make it work they should stipulate that each established team (i.e. Super Rugby teams) have to include a certain number of big name players - not all of them but that way you don't end up with a Waratahs team say that has just the reserve/WTS players. So if the Waratahs were to include Beale, TPN and Phipps as an example, plus other squad players, they would still be resting some stars but having enough big names to make it count.

The promoter is Duco Events (http://www.ducoevents.co.nz/) who do the Auckland Nines. Therefore they're used to talking up a whole pile of bullshit to convince people its ace.

Think they're woefully overestimating the appetite - this is just spitballing from afar to see if there are any legs in the thing.

from what I hear from several sources it's a little more than wild speculation.

Oh I'm sure the event will happen, the speculation was more about the potential scope and popularity.

I reckon it will be a good way to ease both fans and players into the Super season in a relaxed and fun environment. I do doubt it will become the second most prestigious tournament behind the World Cup. Just a little skeptical on that one.......

personally I've always been a bit of a 15s purist. While I enjoy a bit of 7s, i never get too excited about it. Nevertheless, I think the success of the recent Sydney 7s event shows that the format appeals to the mainstream public that maybe wouldn't be big fans of 15 man rugby. I guess a lot of Aussie's like 7s for the same reason they like mungo ball. because it's very easy to follow, no set piece, no playing field position, just ball in hand end to end. So i suspect that a 10s tournament would go over pretty well.

If events like this and the 7s event have the ability to bring more fans back to the 15 man game, or more money to OZ rugby in general, then im all in

This does not seem real to me, t is a journalist who has noting real to report on.

I would suggest that the follow up articles will look at the possibility of a hybrid 9's or 10's tournament with league teams, or evens Reds/maroons, Tahs/Blues teams being involvd

The wishful thinking that such a tournament could become so important on the world stage is inconsistent with holding it in January. At that time of year, the Aus and NZ sides (if any) would use it simply as getting ready for the Super competition, and I seriously doubt NH clubs would send teams down here in the middle of their own playing seasons.

Would have to be staged at a time when players other than test players were otherwise available, or just keep it confined to Super franchises to use as preparation for the season to follow.
