And then, with 16 runs to get, cricket enacts it's stupid rigidity and the players walk off for lunch.

I love test cricket but it really doesn't help itself sometimes.

And oddly enough, had it been the tea break approaching they could have stayed out for and extra half hour to get a result.

Great series win for the boys, very well deserved. Hats off to BMac as well for a fine career and an innings to remember in his last match. I've got a lot of time for him as a player and as a bloke. We're nowhere near the finished article yet but we're on our way and considering the turnover in personnel over the last 12 months this summer has been a great success.

Imagine how much better the past 12 months would have been had Burns and Khwaja gone to England last year as some of us advocated.:)

But then we wouldn't have the 2nd G(B)OAT of all time in Voges.

Burns, yes, though I'm not sure Ussie had done enough at that stage. Hard to argue with his form since though.

EDIT: Just checked, yeah UK had 55 runs at 27.50 last Shield season. Not great.

Perhaps, but I'd like to think that the selectors are trying to identify talent, not just going off the numbers.

By the number, David Hussey would have been picked ahead of everyone but Voges and Michalel Klinger would have been picked ahead of most of the rest. :)

Disclaimer: I was advocating both Burns and Khawaja pre Ashes.;)

Ussie hadn't recovered from his knee reconstruction and wasn't available for the Ashes.

Think Burns has been handled really well. He still has that technical flaw that has been noted previously, but these last few innings have been the best he's played. Would he have done any better in England? Perhaps, though the moving ball, and his county record last year suggests the selectors probably got it right.

Behavior is inexcusable, players deserve more or less whatever they get.

Still, can't help but think that the umpire should give a little bit more than a stoic shake of the head. Kettlebot has been head and shoulders above his counterparts on the field and in the box this series.

Yeah, shoulda pointed out that it wasn't Nigel Llong and/ or sung a few lines of Instant Karma (the remix in which it's not quite so instant :))

You've got to base it on something I guess. Voges stats were so imposing that he had to at least be in the frame. Anyway, old argument, what happened, happened.

Not quite sure about the injury preventing him from touring. Both Burns and Khawaja were selected in an Australia A team to tour India last March.;)

In fact, Khawaja was so uninjured that he was named captain. This was almost the exact same day as the touring party to the West Indies was announced. And of course its the same selection panel that couldn't find anyone to drop in favour of US only 3 weeks ago.

Nor criticising the Voges selection in this post - just pointing out that selectors need to judge talent, not simply rely on figures.

The contrast between the Smith/Hazelwood reaction to the McCullum/Bracewell reaction to the incorrect no ball call in Wellington could not be more marked.

Not for the first time, I find myself agreeing with Peter FitzSimons on this one:

http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/opinio...-test-of-leadership-with-behaviour-against-nz

For the record, I always felt Stephen Fleming was a poor leader (as opposed to captain) for allowing bratty behaviour from e.g. Chris Cairns, Dion Nash & others when things didn't go their way.

Sadly, it's the same refrain we get from Australian cricketers. We play the game hard - as if that excuses poor behaviour. By extension do they think that no one else in world cricket is playing to win?

Smith fined 30% of his match fee, plays the "I didn't know they only use snicko if there's no hot spot" card but c'mon, mate, we went through that in Adelaide (".could've been anything.." etc) didn't we?

http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/cricket/77232930/australian-captain-steve-smith-fined-for-dissent

Players surrounding the umpire/referee and remonstrating in a clearly intimidatory way is not on any where, anytime. Soccer is the only sport where such behaviour isn't dealt with in the harshest way. Cricket needs to think about suspending players in this sort of stuff continues - fines aren't the answer.

As I've said all summer, I think that the on-field umpiring has been of a high standard all season. The Bracewell "no ball" was the only real howler I can recall - any other errors have come from the 3rd umpire e.g. Nigel Llong.

Fines are definitely NOT the answer. These amounts are trifling in the scheme of what these blokes earn, and matter not a jot.
I honestly reckon both deserved a Test off.
It's a bad look, and even worse from the captain.
I agree with QH that the no-ball issue needs sorting - it's currently crap. I reckon if we looked at footage of every ball bowled, they'd see a heap missed.

IMO, if he wanted to plead ignorance he should have said that he didn't see the hotspot on the big screen so blew up. Apart from SFS (and only recently) have I seen an actual big screen, that's not at home, that shows anything you couldn't have already seen.

further more, the old tennis sensors that made a distinct sound when a serve went long should be used for bowlers who overstep and no umpire needs to adjust their eyes to police them at all.
