NRC onwards and upwards

Here's two left field solutions to be considered briefly.

1. ARU is considering different things for Force and Super Rugby generally take over the back office and consolidate the admin ticketing etc. Make it like NZRU but show the Super Rugby Provinces by using NRC as test case.

Possibly have the ARU more hands on
Sign off on coaches. Mckellar Kooka/Vikes good potential Super Coach
Williams Rams good former Aust Asst
Stiles Bris Good. 1/2 a Super Coach
Publicity and ticketing
Manage marquee players fairly What Chieka wants
Manage the distribution of contracted Super players

2. If Brumbies sack Jones hire him to manage NRC. ARU maybe having to help pay out his contract, so may as well get value for money and it will be good to see his push through approach described as an 'agent of change' at work. The fireworks could be like New Years Eve.

Good point. You'd hope you get a big enough crowd to justify it. 2000 came to Force v Rams in Adelaide and I bet they did bugger all advertising. Maybe put it out to tender- establish a cost and say to e.g. the SARU pay x and we'll have a game there. Maybe motivates others to take a leadership role to make it happen. Maybe I'm being too idealistic.

Not only that, when do you play the games, correct me if I'm wrong but already the local club comp in Perth overlaps with the NRC and the Shute Shield aren't wiling to budge on the duration of the season, in fact they want to make the Shute Shield longer which would overlap with the NRC.

I don't think it does. My memory was last year that Premier grade in Perth finished a week or two before the NRC started. According to this:

http://www.rugbylink.com.au/common/pages/public/rv/draw.aspx?gradeid=18304_1&entityid=53125&id=DRAW

our seasons finishes on 20/8, which would be before the NRC, right?

NRC starts on the 20th August, the same weekend as the Perth club rugby grand finals, some of the Perth Spirit players played the NRC match on Thursday night and then played in their club rugby grand final on Saturday.

The Shute Shield finishes only 7 days before the NRC kicks off.
ACTRU finishes 2 weeks before the NRC, and the QPR finishes 3 weeks before the NRC.

During the regular NRC season like the game that was played in Adelaide in 2014? I wasn't talking about a pre-season game or anything like that- or where you replying to someone else?

Ah my mistake I misread your comment as the teams playing a game against local regional teams.

Well I know QLD Country and NSW Country take their games to regional areas, and there's already a fair bit of frustration in some of the regional centres in the respective states which miss out, and you then have the JV sides in Sydney already trying to spread the love between their JV clubs. Given there is only 4 home games a season I don't think their are enough games to experiment with taking them to other places interstate whilst also developing a local following.

Not the best thing in the world, but given the Stars' demise was inevitable, probably the best outcome.

Just need to ensure that the Tahs get more than a half dozen playing NRC, and hopefully a small number of Rebels, Force and Brumbies players get in there too.

The inevitable news sees the best performing NSW franchises from 2015 joining for 2016.

WHere does this leave the Rams and Rays? Assuming that Pro Players return to the NRC teams that their Shute Shield clubs are associated with the merger of the Eagles with the Stars could see a 23 man team of pro players in the Eagles Mk 2, with about 2 pro players each in the Rams and Rays.

The NSW Gin and Tonic Club will be happy that there will be a NSW based team that should be competitive with Brisbane City, and hold a reasonable chance of bring the title and the Horan Little Shield to NSW. That is all that matters, isn't it. Do they really care about the other 2 NSW based NRC franchises?

I sincerely hope that they spread the talent a little more equally to make all three NSW teams viable and competitive. Perhaps there should be a Player Points Cap imposed on the NRC similar to the wildly successful Player Points Cap that is used in NSW Premiership Rugby.

Wildly Successful? Seems to accomplish the best part of fuck all from an outside POV, particularly with all that hogwash that was Paddy Ryan getting 10 minutes in 2nd Grade then coming off the bench and counting for nowt.

HJ I think you've just decided there is a problem without looking to see if there actually is.

Of the 2 Stars games I've found team lists for (vs QC (Quade Cooper) and Final vs BC) they had the following Super Rugby players:

vs QC (Quade Cooper)
Kingston (7s now)
Stewart
Dennis
Hanson (In Melbourne now)
Tilse
McCutcheon

vs BC
Kingston
Stewart
Tilse

They also have Ryan and Skelton. That's 8 including vs QC (Quade Cooper). With 2 of those 8 not available this year.

The Eagles similarly aren't overflowing with

Kellaway
Horwitz
Lance (Now in Perth)
Staniforth
Robinson (overseas)
Sexton (Now in Perth)
Lousi

Of the 7 that appeared to represent them in 2015, the Eagles will lose up to 3.

Between them they may only field 10 Super Rugby players unless for some reason players like Foley or Phipps turned out for some unknown reason.

The NRC starts after the Rio olympics. I'm not aware of the contracting situation but I'd imagine for many their contracts will be up. SUrely some of either Hutchison, McCutcheon, Figg, Kingston and Kennewell (not sure when he's due to return from injury) could well play for the Eagles.

In any case, even the list you've described puts them well ahead of the other 2 NSW teams and essentially leaves these 2 in the same position they were in when there were 9 teams, save that the Rams have lost Southern District players (Jed Holloway) to the Rays, and the Rays will get Matt Lucas back.

You also overlook the fact these three clubs Easts, Randwick and Uni have, probably 70-80% of the NSW age grade reps of the last 3 or 4 years. They would absolutely dominate any U19 or U21 NRC competition. In a recent NSW U20s side I counted 3 players of the 23 selected who were not from one of these clubs.

Here's an example of what they could field this year:

Paddy Ryan (Uni, Tahs)
Tolu Latu (Uni, Tahs)
Tom Robertson (Uni, Tahs)
Will Skelton (Uni, Tahs)
Ryan McCauley (Easts, Tahs*)
Ned Hanigan (Rand, Tahs)
Rowan Perry (Easts, Tahs preseason, former Viking)
Brad Wilkin (Uni, Tahs)
Jake Gordon (Uni, Tahs*)
David Horwitz (Rand, Tahs)
Henry Hutchison (Rand, Sevens)
Matt Carraro (Rand, Tahs)
Jim Stewart (Uni, Tahs)
Reece Robinson (Rand, Tahs)
Andrew Kelleway (Rand, Tahs)
-----
Backing that group up
-----
Jeremy Tilse (Uni, Tahs)
Folau Fainga'a (Uni, 2015 Aus U20s)
Matt Sandell (Uni, Tahs*)
Matt Phillip (Uni, former Tahs preseason, decent NRC performer)
Ben Matwijow (NSW Country, Eagle 2014, Reds fill in contract?)
Tim Buchanan (Easts, former Bris City starter)
Pat McCutcheon (Uni, Sevens)
Stephen Hoiles (Rand, former Tah/Wallaby)
Harrison Goddard (Rand, 2015 Aus schoolboy star)
Andrew Deegan (Rand, Tahs*)
Tom Kingston (Uni, Sevens)
Ben Starkey (Rand, 2015 NSW U20s)
Alex Newsome (Easts, 2015 Aus U20s)
Henry Clunies-Ross (Uni, Tahs*)
Angus Roberts (Uni, former Rebel, decent NRC performer)

This squad would not exceed the limit of 14 2016 contracted super rugby players as (Tahs*) are not in the full time squad. There are only twelve including Matwijow and excluding Skelton as a 2015 Wallaby.

Matwijow is signed with the Reds for the year, they could release him early otherwise he will be playing for a QLD NRC team.

As for some of those Sevens players, I doubt they would be playing unless they are off contract from the Sevens team.

Plus if we are counting the 2015 U20s, surely we count the 2016 U20s. Having a look the Rays and Rams will have a good chunk of that side.

In any case I haven't mentioned that Sam Lousi for some reason played for the Eagles last year and Harry Jones played for the stars. There are other country affiliations too. Duncan Chubb played for the Eagles rather than the Rams before he went to the rebels for example. Not to mention players who have played well in the NRC before like David Hickey and Ryan Dalziel. I guess we'll see.
