Another version of Westfields Sports High School.

I think Westfields were in their prime around 2005,2006 & 2007.
I am very certain they would of beaten most GPS teams, more so in the first XV of 2007 would've been one of the best school teams in the country. It was a shame no private school wanted to play against this public school.

1. Lamarn Ma'a (Parramatta/Wagga City)
2. Scott Podmore (Norths)
3. Daniel Murray (Norths)
4. Ben Matwijow (Norths)

Some alternative selections and position changes are in bold.

** Based on playing for the Tahs there in trials. Not the worst I ever saw.

*** The difference of open and blindside flanker was not so relevant in Fenwicke's day. The tackled ball law had just been changed and the convention that attacking players could have their hands in just after a ruck had formed had not yet been established by referees. Then they enforced no hands-in even for attacking scrummies. Instead dominant forwards pushed lose scrummages with the ball on the ground up the park until they heeled it back.

**** Couldn't find one. Hopefully Guy Millar, the Oz Schools THP in 2010, could find his name there on some future list

Ben Hndmarsh former Aussie schoolboy and Tah's prop would be added to TKS front row

Shit, from past experience on Sportal where there were any number of CAS posters espousing the virtues of primarily Waverley and Barker , I am surprised that no one has taken up my challenge.

Strong talk stickybeak, but hey, let's thump our chests as we spruik our team for a notional contest.

As much as I hate big quotes it's worthwhile looking at the Joeys team again.

I dunno, the BSHS, Terrace, Nudgee, and Ashgrove teams would all be very hard to beat. Bear in mind also that these guys were a year younger than their NSW counterparts in year 12.

All Blacks all, tho not all played Tests. AGS now has 48 AB's on their honours board, the most of any NZ Secondary School. Second is Christchurch BHS with 42 then Wellington College with 33.

5. Ted Fahey (1912-14)
4. Steve Williams (1980-85) [Captain]
3. Declan Curran (1980-83)
2. Chris Carberry (1973-82)
1. Tony Daly (1989-95)

Notes
15. Curley's career was shortened because of the commencement of his priesthood. I saw him play, and with a different calling he would have been a Wallaby great IMO.
)

Terry Curley was a great Wallaby, notwithstanding his highly abbreviated career. He is credited with playing a huge role in an away win against the ABs at the age of 19, back in the days when full backs really earned their keep.

I saw him play a social match at Millner, he must have been 40. He kicked a very neat field goal from about 40 metres out and about 10 in from touch.

BTW Prosser was a tosser.

I am an old Fortian, and for some years our first XV played a trial against SJS, I think the last one was in 1954 or so.

A colleague I worked with who was a few years older than me played in one of the trials. He said it was a bit strange to play against "boys" who shaved and has hairy arses!

I doubt anybody could pick a Fort Street XV

We would struggle to name a full XV who played first grade post-war, I would guess.

Names that I can think of:

Dave Barsley Western Suburbs (RL)
Ian Moutray Drummoyne
Barry Miller Drummoyne
Bob Chambers Drummoyne
Gary Leo Balmain (RL)
Warwick Allen Eastwood
Dennis Keyes Gordon

There must have been more, but I cannot name them. Oh, maybe our most famous living rugger playing old boy - John Singleton, the self-described slowest winger who played 4ths for Briars.

I'm pushing 80 now and believe it or not - I was at that game at Lancaster Park in 1958. It was a couple of years before my family returned to Australia after my dad, a Kiwi, was transferred to NZ from Aus a few years earlier.

To be honest I knew nothing about the Aussie team and everything about the All Blacks - and was disappointed that Don Clarke, the great fullback, was not playing because he had been injured.

I can't remember who the NZ players were except the AB hooker Dennis Young who used to coach our 1st XV a few times, and Meads, but I remember Aussie Alan Morton scoring that try for the Wallabies and Terry Curley who sent these booming punts down the field in the age when you could kick into touch directly from anywhere on the field and still gain ground.

Nobody had ever heard of him and to their credit the crowd applauded every kick; it was an art.

The Kiwis were good sports and they got onto the field after the test match, and although their team had lost in a low-scoring game they applauded the Aussies who were at the top level of the old cricket pavilion by that time waving to the crowd.

There was a live commentary on radio, and they interviewed some of the Aussies, I think for some of the team to say G'day to folks back home (and it was on the loud-speaker too) - and one Wallaby said he was happy because "We beat the bastards".

Well, in those days in NZ, that wasn't said in public to a crowd and after a shocked pause, and people looking at each other in mock horror, the Kiwis had a good laugh.

That was a great day for Aussie rugby though I didn't appreciate it at the time.

I've just googled "We beat the bastards" and got this:

So it was hooker Ron Meadows who made the quote (and the final score was 6-3 - at the time when a try was worth only 3 points).

But the writer is wrong in one regard: he wrote "On leaving the field Ron was collared by a radio interviewer." He wasn't - he said it to the crowd on the top "floor" of the old cricket pavilion.

I was in the crowd watching, and listening to, the full quote which the article says was:

"We beat the bastards - you little beauty."

Years in brackets may be incorrect as sources differed, I just assumed all finished school aged 17. Nevertheless, this side would be almost unbeatable IMO. Current player caps may also vary.

Tony D'Arcy was a member of the famous 1977/78 Schoolboys team, so '75 probably incorrect

Always had the thought he repeated Yr12 that time at Cranbrook for their centenary year and may have been given a scholarship, also think it's the last time Cranbrook won the comp, he was very instrumental in that.

I went to uni with Williams. Martin Pitt, the manager of the 1981 Schoolboys that included Williams, was the Sports master at Cranbrook at the time. Williams was 'recruited' but he was going to repeat year 12 in any case as he didn't achieve the HSC mark he needed the first time around. He got the necessary mark at Cranbrook.

This was in the era when people did repeat for purely academic reasons.

From memory Cranbrook did win but their Centenary is actually in 2018

Great post, Lee, and good to hear that there is somebody older than me!

I am 74. My earliest memories of international rugby was when our neighbour, who was also an old Fortian but loved league, took me to the SCG to watch NSW play the first Fijian touring side. Joe Levula! Dick Tooth tackled him head on, never seen a better head on tackle to this day!
