Nerdishness and Solar power

Went to a conference recently. Read about it here:

http://unleashthepowerwall.com/2016/05/22/energy-networks-conference/

Biggest takeaway: Networks are now realising consumers matter, and they can't hold them at arm's length behind a Retailer agreement.

The most interested parties were WA, SA, and NT, who have issues with tyranny of distance, and tenuous or nonexistent links to the big network in SE Australia.

There was a bit of chat from Tasmania, where Reposit are already doing some good work (Google Bruny Island Reposit)

It was fucking awesome, hanging around people who know their shit, know where they're going, and are unencumbered by rubbish internal politics and general top heaviness.

And of course, out hitting the piss with them afterwards, as well as not paying for any of it

Kind of depressing, now that I'm back in the land of the Corporate Fucktard. :(

I really have no idea how I'd get into the industry either, you need any or all of the following:

1) Engineering qualifications
2) Decent contacts
3) A shitload of experience to get a job that would keep my household stable.

I'll keep plugging away at the website and twitter in the meantime.

A few more conferences won't hurt. Many a deal done over the twentieth beer.
Or so I hear.

simple, just balance the calories, where you gain you cut back correspondingly elsewhere.

Don't eat should do it.

Mate, based on how much I was handed, I'm going full Ethiopian for a month! :)

I haven't really been a drinker since I lost a heap of weight a few years ago. Buggers up my digestive system - particularly rum :(

In any case, I'm kind of stuck where I am for about the next 12 months, as the wife just started a new job. Someone has to take the bullet for school holidays etc. while that is all going on.

As of this time next year, I'm 5 months from Long Service Leave (10 years. Fark!) so might as well stick it out and try to skill up.

Good question. Never thought about it because I've never had a blackout here. I'll check and get back to you.

According to the installer - the battery will disconnect. Its a safety feature.

I think the logic is that once the inverter stops registering a grid connection, it tells the battery to go to sleep until anything changes on that front. That way, if I'm not there to switch the isolator to the powerwall, no-one is in danger of pulling volts if they need to get to the house circuitry.

Winter so far is quite interesting - use of that raging c***ocks of a ducted heating system has the desired effect of sucking power out of the grid.

Its a bit of a bastard because the very mild, but bright autumn we had was driving the power bill below the cost of connection fee per day (more to come on that).
I'm getting the meter changed so I can do time-of-use, and that means the Reposit box can import off-peak power to save me a bit of dosh in this regard.

The approach is being considered by a lot of customers as a boon, and what I'm expecting is the ability to take the power bills closer to zero.

However, some companies (esp in QLD) are prohibiting power arbitrage using this method because - well because they're shunts.

First bill arrived. My condolences to the power companies.
