NZ cynical offside from Umaga-Jensen and pinged. Aus kick for line but not straight on the throw. NZ scrum on their 22.

15 minutes remaining. Aussies need points.

Tui good run but isolated and NZ win penalty 28m out. Barrett misses it. Aussie subs on JJH + reserve THP

Great cut-out pass from NZ's Walker-Luaera (sp?) to Umaga-Jensen who does well to run 20m+ to score!

Goodnight nurse, despite Barrett's missed conversion.

NZ 41-24 at 70th minute

Another great NZ try in the RH corner with impressive interplay; passing and offloading.

Barrett converts from the sideline

48-24 at 75 mins

Barrett is the commentator's MotM.

Aussies get a decent break out in the dying minutes but well defended by NZ. And NZ counter and run almost the length of the field to bring up the 50 under the posts in injury time. Harsh medicine, but that's rugby. Converted.

55-24 FT

Joeys mostly out-muscled the Baby Blacks' pack. But the NZ team mostly out-drilled and out-skilled Australia (that bit is the same story at almost every level for the past decade).

This is not so much down to the season's preparation IMO – sure there are always things that could've been done better and unavailable players that might've been included – but I reckon it's due more to the respective junior development pathways and coaching from the ground up in each country. An area that would be great to improve.

We were out coached.

Why fly Ed Craig all the way to the other side of the World to give him 90 seconds of play? WTF does Coach Thommo bring on another prop at the 60 minute mark to replace the Hooker? A prop who's line out throwing skills and mobility match mine?

What sort of line out caller calls the back of the line out when they must know that the thrower can't throw straight?

Don't get me started on why we play 7's in the 8 position. Probably 5 tries botched by the inability to control Gilbert at the back of a dominant scrum, including a 14 point turnaround which appeared to break our back, and give the AIG's the confidence they needed to put us to the sword.

Most of our bench disappointed compared to the Darkness, who I would have loved to see how they would have gone against then Soap Dodgers.

Our loose forwards were outplayed by their opponents, and our inaccurate tackle contest work allowed the Darkness back into the game time and again. The communication in Defence left a lot to be desired, and without the loose forwards slowing the opposition R/M ball down, NZL were able to gain metres almost at will.

Tuttle stood out and he has a bright future in the game. Even though we munted the NZL scrum, we did not control the ball well enough to take advantage of that dominance. Line out work was forgettable. Attack was inconsistent. We were well beaten by a better prepared and more accurate team.

Who would make a combined ANZAC team? Lomax, Tui, Tuttle, Magnay, Maddocks.

All eyes turn to the 2017 U20 RWC, and Curtain Raiser Cup, after yet another disappointing campaign.

Stone cold truth. Actually don't get me started on 7's either, for other reasons.

Look, it's time for Thompson, who has had a long run, to make way for someone else. Also couldn't understand why Tui didn't get a go in the tournament opener, for one thing.

What I keep seeing in almost any Trans-Tasman rugby game at any level though, regardless of the management, is that the Kiwis play with ball in hand is on another plane. Passing, positioning the support, moving/drawing the opposition defenders, offloading - and that's before we even get to cleaning out and recycling. Probably a decade's worth of development work paying off right there.

I was having a cheeky peak at the ages of the players of the team and a large core of the squad will be available next year and at least more than last year.

14 by my count. I know injuries and form come and go, but you might see:

1. Harry Chapman
2. Jordan Uelese
3. Sham Vui
4. Harry Hockings
5. Ryan McCauley
6. Angus Scott-Young
7. Liam Wright
8. Rob Leota
9. Harry Nucifora
10. Nick Jooste
11. Liam McNamara
12. Sione Tuipolotu
13.
14. Simon Kennewell
15. Jack Maddocks

Not a bad looking team at all. 7 of those guys started against NZ. Hopefully some will see some a little bit of game time in the NRC.

That is encouraging.

To throw a name in for the vacant spot - Guy Porter plays 13/15/wing and would have nabbed a wing spot this year IMO if not for injury.

I suspect Tuipolotu, Maddocks and Jooste may be playing some regular Super next year - how will that affect their availability?

The back row was the only area in the game where NZ clearly outpointed the Aussies. Our backrow had very little impact in open play and the back of the scrum was just woeful. Any coach who could see what was going on and then take no action to correct it just isn't worth his salt. Jones should have been yanked about 30 minutes in for Leota who looks to be a real No 8. The 7, our Captain? was mostly invisible and ASY (Angus Scott-Young) caused more lost turnovers than a pie shop specialising in apple dishes.

Our backline played more constructively than the NZers, but their counter-punching is awesome to watch.

The tight five battle was won 100 - 0 by the Aussies.

Coaching and management of the bench cost us that game.

Yep, Aus back row pretty much non-existent.

Wright tried hard.

Jones and ASY (Angus Scott-Young) both missing in action. I am yet to figure out where the wraps on Jones come from - named captain for the NZ series and after that I think Thompson felt obligated to stick with him. Had no impact around the ground that I saw.

Guys, we had a 'mare at eightman but the side conceded 50+

As good as our tight 5 were, I just don't think we can claim to have won anything 100 nil but merely lost on the actual scoreboard.

Australia has never beaten NZ at the U20 Worlds.

Maybe - just maybe - these Kiwis know something about how to play rugby.

I'm guessing they've never been beaten by Ireland before or only scraped over Wales by 1 point either.

This NZ team was beatable. They ran away with it at the end but Australia couldn't land the killer punch when they needed to, despite being in the position to do so.
