Can anyone explain the logic of it to me?

Nudgee certainly have fielded Malala in the front line, especially when defending at the set piece. The timing he shows when he shoots to shut down wide attacks was perfect to the millisecond.

He's such a brilliant front line defender that if he wasn't so dynamic in counter-attack Nudgee probably wouldn't play him at fullback at all.

Murray Taulagi is a little in the same boat. He's got a booming kicking boot and an evasive running style, so he's pigeonholed at fullback, but he also had great physicality which helps him defend very well in the front line.

Haven't noticed it from TSS and GT, which leads me to think it's simply Nudgee and BSHS utilising their defenders where they benefit the team most in each situation.

I've just watch the GTvNC game, and I was at the BSHSvTSS game, and I have a question for you.

I've seen it a lot this season, but bringing the fullback up into the defensive line, or alternatively failing to drop back a second back when the fullback makes a tackle seem to me to be suicide. Especially in the wet.

However I see A LOT of Aussie school and club sides do it, not just schoolboy 1st XV's. It's my opinion that this issue cost NC the game on the weekend, and to me it cost more teams many more points during the season.

Can anyone explain the logic of it to me?

Just the lack of defensive nous, therefore coaching, on how the back 3 should communicate and play as a group and the coaches instilling it into the boys so they can perform under pressure. Lots of team drill and not much position specific skills being imparted.

I think the concept is good . but to say state high is not competitive is.well . im not going to say . one question is it about participation or results . if it is results then maybe to B's is fair . if participation then go all thw way to e's . not too many school care about C's even some about B's . the coaches the players dont care and if the schools are playing each other twice in the 13C's or even another schools 13D's then does it really count . its not a comp. Its a sup draw..And im at BBC so im not being bias

No. That's why the concept is quite good, you need to reward all players to be fair, not just those you select. As I have previously commented that would leave NC, GT or Churchie to take the title, a little boring.

For mine, given that 100% of games are played and each school has one, the firsts is still the best measure of the best rugby players within a school. If the other players (14, 15 16's whatever team you like or player for that matter) was "that good" he would be in the firsts. (Sorry for the blunt analysis, but that's the truth of the matter).

I was pretty dissapointed in the BSHS school today, the jibe that there was only 6 supporters there for the premiership is harsh but pretty close to true as well. TSS away from home showed a lot of support.

The outcome could have gone either way especially with some really odd referee calls at the ground (maybe it was clearer on the video). I thought BSHS had blown it with bad passes and poor defence, but to kee their cool and get it in the forwards was smart and got the bacon.

All in all not a great game of rugby, but hey, we won!

Don't be dark side that's the norm. Has been for multiple decades. That's what your buying. That said they deserve and have earner every victory.

State High won 3 out of the 6 'A' team premierships. 12's, 14's, and the 1st 15. They may lack depth but appear to be doing something right.

Yeah talking and asking the right kids to join the school. That's something that is right.

I doubt NC will trouble anyone, from what I heard GT absolutely smashed them in the final round, NC too had to revert to pick and go up the middle to get anywhere.

There's your second learning process, dark side (beyond State High not having many supporters)... Never write the blue n white off, old boy.. YOU WILL EAT YOUR WORDS; you can trust me on that one.

No I think it's just bad positioning, non coaching or simply covering for a weaker defender.

Both NC & GT must be doing something right in their defense whether it be intentional or not. They have the least points scored against them. Does anyone have a try count for the final ladder?

Can you bring in 80% of your team in Grade 8 and 9 for the specific primary purpose of being more competitive on the paddock and call yourself pure ?

Just wonderin..

Not saying that this was the case with this year's GT Firsts Team, Getwithme , however , watch that space for the Red and Black come 2018 onwards

It's pretty clear

Enjoy the purity while it lasts

It sounds like this was a pretty strong cohort across the board.

I believe BSHS had 7 boys who started in grade 8.

IGS had 7 boys who were there in grade 8 while some of these boys go back as far a grade 3. I also believe that 7 boys in the second XV were there in grade 8 as well.

2 schools had boys in both the first XV and first XI and there are half a dozen boys that stopped playing cricket in grade 10 to pursue rugby. They probably would have been first XI candidates as well.

I haven't even covered track and field, swimming etc as I am sure that there are first XV boys who have excelled there as well.

Well done to all the boys who made contributions to their schools at so many levels. Headmasters all round should be pleased with a well-rounded cohort.

NB - Please feel free to correct the numbers quoted and add anything that I might have missed.

I know State High Firsts scored, from memory, 5 tries to 2 against Nudgee? And I think it was 5 tries to 2 against TSS as well?
State High hardly kicked a goal all season.

Had a great night at the rugby dinner last night. The only dissappointing aspect was the general chat about approaches made to some players currently at other GPS schools BSHS and Terrace to come to the school...wow who controls who targets these kids and families

Nothing beats strong running rugby where people use their feet and nail every pass ... There's a few bits of foul play there by the way, not impressive despite how much I love the aggression.

Well I thought that was one of the best seasons of Qld GPS rugby since I cannot remember when. Congratulations to all the schoolboy rugby players involved.

With only 30 minutes to go to the final whistle of the season and there are still four teams with a shot at the premiership and then having everything only being decided with 20 seconds to go is just sensational.

Right from the first round with TSS snatching a win over TGS in the dying stages, just about every round brought last minute, season deciding results and or upsets that turned the season on its head and the last minute try in the last (delayed) game by BSHS against TSS typified that.

And congratulations to BSHS coming through and winning the 2016 premiership.!!!

I was out at Tennyson on Saturday for a magnificent spectacle of rugby and entertainment (even despite the first half drenching). And it was one of the great days of schoolboy rugby and showed just how good and the high level that QLD GPS rugby has lifted itself to on and off the field.

So as the season is wrapping up I thought it was interesting to look at the predictions on the first couple of pages of this thread. In hindsight, some of them are funny to read by just how far off they were. But that is the nature of this forum and what brings the colour and depth of rivalry at this level of the game.

And lastly a couple of thank yous to those that have made 2016 Qld GPS rugby so entertaining:-

DoubleTake Live and the commentary from Rob Matthews and Nic Darveniza:- taking things in QLD GPS to a new level.Well done.Insightful, balanced and providing opportunities for people to watch a game they could not get to.I had mates tuning in from overseas to watch and they loved it.

TheKing (aka Nic Darveniza) for providing info and background on so many of the First XV’s, coaches and players. Better than any publication has done since the days of the old.

BraveandGame for the commentary and update on the age groups even if a tinge of red and black bias from time to time.

From the Side and Legend of the 80’s for coming up and continuing with the “Whole of School” points concept.I love it as I believe it measures a schools commitment to providing a depth of rugby talent that can only be good for the greater game and its future.

Warren Wobble – so entertaining, nuff said.

HJ Nelson – some sensational photos of the TSS games with players from both teams

The other regular Green and Gold posters who so proudly wore the school colours on their sleeves.

And lastly the moderators for keeping things on track.
