There are three selectors not two.

In addition to those appointed by ASRU, Adrian Thompson, head of ARU High Performance Unit (I think) and Coach of Aust U20 is Head of Selectors. He currently resides in Qld.

ASRU can only select selectors from those who put their name forward. Perhaps the NSW folk don't put their hat in the ring.

I don't know if you are correct in your assessment or not.... I don't care. Please resist a swing at the lads ... they are not fair game. . Go for any bit of the adults running this.

There are several edges to the sword these lads have been handed. Not being selected hurts .... being selected is exciting but weighs heavily on young shoulders. As well as the flush of success it opens them up to a complete new level of vulnerability and humiliation

selection of coaches must be difficult or limited applicants
not being sure if the head or tail wags the dog maybe both should be removed
where opportunity permits

or maybe if the ARU has any interest in schoolboy rugby invest in coaches not on the payroll of any of the associations

AFAIK there's a bit of a buggins turn process in appointing coaches - all the associations get the role on a rotation basis (by all, in NSW I mean GPS, CAS and CHS).

No ISA then Quickie? Do they not make their coaches available?

Don't think they've had a go for a while, although Papahatzis might have coached one of the NSW sides a few years back, but ISA don't seem to get much of a go. They other 3 associations have been around a lot longer. I'm sure that their coaches would be available.

Not sure about coaches but ISA administrators seem to be able to manage to get nominated as Team Manager for both State and National teams.

Saxon from Oakhill, Geoff from Stannies, and the bloke from Central Coast Grammar spring to mind.

Wear your Tin Foil Hats here, not in other threads folks.

Australian Ba Ba's again the selection process at schoolboy level ignored season form and form at national championships. Too many personal agenda's eg Newington no 8 coming in from combined states to the run on side and the assistant coach happens to be from Newington.
Top sides at national championships and player form ignored why even play national championships if the selections are influenced by what state and territory the selectors are from. This year has been the worst on record for selections not on form but personal agenda's Australian schools rugby has to have a good hard look at how they run this competition or they will lose creditability.
Selectors need to be independent or an equal representation and weighted on how teams performed and from coming in.

@ Tightgrips who do you think deserved selection that missed out?

I think Fenn from Riverview was unlucky, but there is some serious NO 8 tallent around this year including the Victorian.

I dont think you can use the example of a Combined States selection as a support for your argument. If anything that supports the argument that selectors were looking at form at the Championships and NOT just selecting the boys out of NSW 1 and QLD 1 who should be in pole position for selection to Australian sides.

There was a good number of boys selected from NSW2 some of whom came from GPS 2 - that points to form at Champs being a strong consideration.

Exactly. NSW2 outplayed NSW1 and the Combined States team finished 3rd overall, so players were chosen on form from the Championships.

From my point of view and regarding form at the Championships apart from form at any other time, it depends how a particular team gels during that week in camp.

The State selectors dont always get it right as well.

There are always controversial selections made. I thought Jackson Mohi, a winger from NSW1s was very unlucky not to be called into the team ahead of a player who was reserve for NSW1s.

Of the 23 First XV players in Queensland to be voted into the team of the season by their coaches, the GAGR beat writers, their peers and the spectators, just four were selected in the Australian Schoolboys.

The fullback the Cowboys just signed didn't get a look in, and neither did the outside centre who was widely considered the most dominant player in the competition (and who played Schoolboys last year)

The kicker is that neither of those two excelled at the trials.

So contrary to popular opinion the selectors seem to have taken trial form over reputation when maybe the safe bet was to stick to reputations.

I wonder if Murray Taulagi would have signed his League contract had he been picked for Australia.

Who was the outside centre for Qld 1?
The selectors are damned if they do, and damned of they don't.

A bloke who ironically didn't receive a single nomination for team of the year!

From nine coaches, three writers, and 55 First XV players, he received one vote. In the 1600 person public vote he finished dead last with 1.7% of the vote.

It does sound like I'm knocking him and I'm not trying to at all. He's a very talented player with huge potential and those votes don't accurately reflect his ability.

But with fairness to the other guys, he had a down year in 2016 while lots of other guys played the house down in that position.

Triston Stranghon? He played 13 for Qld 1 and 13 for the Barbarians

I didn't particularly want to name names, but the player you mentioned could not be considered the form centre of the competition by any stretch of the imagination.

I went in to it in more detail in the post above.
