Big summer ahead. More cricket than even I can manage to watch and it seems not all pundits are happy. Scheduling a T20 international in Adelaide one day before a test starts in India - fuck it, why not? Seriously?

And the sooner things get underway the sooner Clarke can go screw himself and get out of the papers everyday.

So the first test. Only genuine headache I see for Aus is the Burns/Marsh question. Burns on form with a ton in the Shield should help but Marsh with a 73. Considering the quicks have been rested (and rested and rested) recently I would be tempted to play both and relegate the younger Marsh to 12th man duties.

Burns
Warner
Khwaja
Marsh
Smith
Voges
Neville
Starc
Hazlewood
Siddle
Lyon

M Marsh

Both Kurtis Patterson and Marcus Harris scored well in their Sheffield Shield matches, Patterson getting 111 & 38 at number 4 and Harris 115 & 77 opening.

Australia squad for the first two Commonwealth Bank Test matches: Steve Smith (c), David Warner (vc), Josh Hazlewood, Usman Khawaja, Nathan Lyon, Mitch Marsh, Shaun Marsh, Joe Mennie, Peter Nevill, Peter Siddle, Mitch Starc, Adam Voges

Unfortunately Clarke is apparently going to be a big part of the channel 9 coverage this summer. This is the level to which the once great commentary team has sunk. If I listen to 9 at all while watching, the sound will be hitting mute whenever Clarke is on. The man is such a narcissist.

Absolutely no way I'll be listening to that trio of flogs (Clarke, Pietersen and Warne) on Ch. Nein this summer. There will be so much mutual back slapping that I'll want to vomit. Clarke also has a very irritating way of speaking, based on the last time I heard him commentate (during that ludicrous period in the India series when he was still captain but analysing his own team on air!). I don't think there are too many people with that high an opinion of him these days and it's not hard to see why. Like so many things in commercial television, I can see it blowing up in Nein's faces.

On to the actual cricket, I can see this series being very hotly contested and unless our batting improves markedly from the last few tests we could well get dusted on our own tracks. It's not like the Saffers haven't done it before. If Steyn starts breathing fire then look out. That other young quick of theirs, Rabada looks very handy too. Our quicks are going to have to bowl very well I think and for long periods on those roads we call our decks to give us a chance to take 20 wickets consistently. I can see the Adelaide test under lights being every bit as low scoring and dramatic as last season too. Depending on the weather next weekend I might get along and have a look at it.

Hopefully the WACA track isn't as flat as it has been recently. Looking forward to the two night tests - I can imagine the Gabba pitch having a bit of life at night and the ball swinging around as well.

Clarke did some commentary last summer. In fact, he was one of the few of the "new" breed to concentrate on the game, rather than the good old days, or himself. Let's see if that continues.

Note: regardless of what you think of him personally, if he's doing the job required, then you need to leave that aside. We do it all the time in our working lives :)

The cancer in the commentary box is Warne. While he has a good cricketing brain, most of his time is spent talking his food, his drinking, his tours, himself in general.

Taylor is, and always has been, dull as a turd.

Chappelli at least still has some of the old guard about him, and while he's grumpy as fuck, he is at least fair to both sides playing.

Brayshaw, while a goose, at least was funny and enthusiastic. But he is an enabler to Warne et al.

Mark Nicholas has this burning desire for prose at every opportunity.

I'd like them to get Ricky Ponting and/or Mark Waugh in. Their time with the Big Bash has shown them to be insightful and I wonder whether this can carry over to long-form cricket.

They're an appalling lot the Channel 9 cricket crew aren't they? I can't forgive them for presuming the commentary's more important than the broadcast. Take it from me, C9, a rusted-on test cricket fan of some 50 years' standing, I couldn't give a fuck about any commercial gee-ups AND those stupid social media distractions.

No one's mentioned the red cordial kid, Michael Slater, he's the worst of a bad bunch. I'm ashamed to call him a fellow son of the sporting capital of the western world. The other Waggerite, Taylor, probably comes in as second worst, Mark talks far too much in that crappy, high-pitched, thin voice of his. The whole crew needs a good cleanout, starting with that Pommy git Nicholas.

Richie Benaud'd be turning in his grave if he could see what's happening to his legacy in cricket commentary.

The other bloke to annoy me is Ian Healy. Jeez that guy talks some rubbish at times.

I can see myself watching with the sound down most of the summer.

Warne isn't that bad when he's not on Channel nein. Was watching a test in England earlier this year and he was alright in the box.

Pretty dominant Day 1 for the Baggy Greens. Starc and Hazlewood just ripping out the heart in that first session, then Faf faffing up straight after lunch.

Luckily de Kock got stuck right in or they could have been looking at under 200.

As it is, Warner on top, Marsh not fucking up (unusual) and unless the Proteboks get lively tomorrow morning, could be a long day or two in the field for them.

Meanwhile, Dale Steyn ponders what might not have been.

Pretty poor bowling today by South Africa. Too short and too wide, too often.

Warner looked a bit lucky but that's what he does at the Waca - has nearly 750 runs at an averages over 100 at the ground now because quicks get carried away with the bounce.

Philander came up with one good delivery, a couple more that swung a little but trundling in at 129km/h opening the bowling in Perth seems like a poor choice by the visitors

The inquest into Phil Hughes death has released the results. It is so full of common sense conclusions you really have to wonder if it was worthwhile. A tragic accident and a verballing about the sledging culture that exists in the game while finding it had no effect on what happened. Well done Mr Barnes.

Great first day of cricket. Would have been a big blow to restrict SA to less after the start our bowlers got. A lead of 150+ should set things up nicely.

#1?

It could be a long summer for the South Africans if they don't sharpen up their bowling.

Not helped with Steyn picking up an injury.

A couple of wickets can change the tone of a match but South Africa may struggle without ABdV and Steyn.

Classic Aussie innings. Down about 5/30 in last 90 minutes.

Time to dump the young Marsh and play 6 batsmen.
