See Moore is supporting the concept but Pulver says no Wallabies.

I think the concept is great. Suppose the question is how many teams ???
QLD
NSW
ACT
WA ????
Victoria ??

Or does it just become a QLD V NSW match ?

Probably have to be a similar format to League. To be eligible for a State you have to play your first senior game in that particular State. For example: Matt To'omua, Queensland schoolboy but signed immediately by the Brums after school so he would be a Brumby.

Based on that criteria lots of lads would be ineligible to play at all.

To make it a real contest and a successful model all eligible players (including Wallabies) should play

Has to be New South Wales v Queensland, it'd be embarrassing otherwise IMO.

No allies concept either. No passion.

However, I think it might, undo, a little bit of development work that's been put into WA and Victoria if Super Rugby is no longer the peak of domestic rugby. What incentive does any player not directly signed to a Super side have to stay after school? Sign up for a NSW or Queensland Club, play a few senior games become eligible for another paycheck/higher honour if you make it that far.

It would need to have the Wallabies for real success, but where does that fit in?

I reckon it's embarrassing for our Sport that we're even considering it, comes across as desperate and incredibly unimaginative and if it ever gets off the ground it will fizzle out as a concept within a couple of years.

But that's what they said about the league version too isn't it, so I'm probably wrong.

The other big difference is, they were the only states in the NRL (at SOO conception) and its the only time they play. We already have Qld vs NSW twice a year. So for people not into union, they need to explain the difference in colorful billboards... or use and astrix.
"Qld vs NSW"* *insert long eligibility rules everyone whinges about here*

Eligibility should be your state schoolboy rep side, and any league players who were in one of those sides are welcome to play.

If we're going to do it at least get some media interest in the concept.

I sort of think we are desperate.

I think the concept would work and bring a lot more viewers to our game

It really doesn't matter whether its rugby or fucking tiddliwinks. Market the thing, State against State and all that shit and I think a lot of Queenslanders and maybe some NSW'men would tune in

Regardless, this should be something developed outside of the ARU, and they give the tick of approval for player release in exchange for the money.

Shouldn't be wasting their own money on viability studies and marketing and that sort of thing.

The less involvement by the ARU, the better

Should be just the States. That way it has some chance of success:)

if the intent is exposure... make it a charity game. i.e. all profits go to whatever. then hopefully it makes additionals watch the super rugby derbies.

Ok, assuming the Wallaby team is pretty similar to this year's, it may look like this:

15 Israel Falou, 14 Sefanaia Naivalu, 13 Tevita Kurindrani, 12 Reece Hodge, 11 Dane Haylett-Petty, 10 Bernard Foley, 9 Nicholas Phibbs, 8 Lopeti Timani, 7 Michael Hooper, 6 Sean McMahon, 5 Adam Coleman, 4 Rory Arnold, 3 Sekope Kepu, 2 Stephen Moore, 1 Scott Sio

16 Tolu Latu, 17 Tom Robertson, 18 Alaan Ala'alatoa, 19 Will Skelton, 20 Scott Fardy, 21 Nick Frisby, 22 Quade Cooper, 23 Henry Speight

The first question of SOO is how is it judged? Born, first game, first senior game, etc. I've gone with the simple, yet highly unlikely, place of birth approach.

So let's look at what potential QLD and NSW SOO teams there could be.

QLD first:

15 Luke Morahan, 14 Dom Shipperley, 13 Campbell Magnay, 12 James Dargaville, 11 Izaia Perese, 10 Bryce Hegarty, 9 Matt Lucas, 8 Harley Fox, 7 Michael Gunn, 6 Angus Cottrell, 5 Rob Simmons, 4 Blake Enever, 3 Toby Smith, 2 James Hanson, 1 James Slipper

16 Andrew Ready, 17 Tom Moloney, 18 TBC, 19 Sam Jeffries, 20 Ben Hyne, 21 Ian Prior, 22 Mack Mason, 23 Tom Banks

Any suggestions? Really struggling for props.

Now NSW:

15 Andrew Kellaway, 14 Reese Robinson, 13 Billy Meakes, 12 Mitchell Inman, 11 Rob Horne, 10 Jake McIntyre, 9 Mick Snowden, 8 Jed Holloway, 7 George Smith, 6 Ben McCalman, 5 Kane Douglas, 4 Sam Carter, 3 Laurie Weeks, 2 Tatafu Polota-Nau, 1 Paddy Ryan

16 Hugh Roach, 17 Ben Daley, 18 Ben Alexander, 19 Cadeyrn Neville, 20 Jack Dempsey, 21 Jake Gordon, 22 Andrew Smith, 23 Tom English

If we are to make this an Origin series it seems if we really want our best talent, then we need a Pacific Islander team. Which could be:

15 Karmichael Hunt, 14 Taquele Naiyaravoro, 13 Samu Kerevi, 12 Duncan Paia-aua, 11 Marika Koroibete, 10 Jack Debreczeni, 9 TBC, 8 Leroy Houston, 7 Adam Korzyk, 6 Lolo Fakaosilea, 5 Lukhan Tui, 4 Dean Mumm, 3 Taniela Tupou, 2 Pat Leafa, 1 Sef Fa'agase

16 Brandon Paenga-Amosa, 17 Pek Cowan, 18 Tetera Faulkner, 19 Jordan Smiler, 20 Jarrad Butler, 21 Ryan Louwrens, 22 Chris Feauai-Sautia, 23 Eto Nabuli

Any half back options out there?

And finally, a combined states team:

15 Jono Lance, 14 Robbie Coleman, 13 Kyle Godwin, 12 Sione Tuipulotu, 11 Aidan Toua, 10 Christian Lealiifano, 9 Joe Powell, 8 Scott Higginbotham, 7 Chris Alcock, 6 Tom Cusack, 5 Tom Staniforth, 4 Ross Haylett-Petty, 3 Les Makin, 2 Saia Fainga'a, 1 Cruze Ah-Nau

16 Harry Scoble, 17 Francois van Wyk, 18 Tyrel Lomax, 19 TBC, 20 Kane Koteka, 21 Ryan Louwrens, 22 Anthony Fainga'a, 23 Jackson Jordon-Hope

So I've had to include a couple of SAFFAs in there, so if anyone knows any true alternatives.

Anyway, after that wasted time, I don't think the talent is there (Wallabies excluded) for this game.

As I have maintained elsewhere - send all these players back to clubland and promote the hell out of that for the month.

Pay big money to the players, say $10-15,000 until the concept gains momentum (and the following), then give 'em $30,000 like the Leaguies

Make it a spectacle - it has the potential to be huge, if we successfully tap into the interstate rivaly

For origin concept to be really successful would need need like League to include Wallaby players. But if that is not possible does not mean could not happen but commercial success of rugby origin series would be fairly limited.

I agree allied concept would be stretch too far as AFL experience showed not much passion...PI origin team possibly...but in first up QLD vs NSW and placate the other states by saying will add others has concept developed over time (read successful commercially).

Firstly Reg, fantastic post. Great research and you've got me convinced that its something I'd love to watch.

Secondly, Mumm's got islander heritage? Hahahahaha.

Imagine Mumm firing this out of his gob with his perfect private schoolboy accent:

"Oi Taqele ya matausi I promise I'm one of the tokos. Deadset sole I swear I'm 100% skuxx-deluxe".

It's a terrible gimmick made completely redundant by Super Rugby, and it would not nearly be half as popular as rugby's current version of state of origin that is the endless debate between Foley and Quade by the punters on GAGR match threads.........

I think it's a bloody terrible idea. Realistically it can only be NSWvQld.
League State of Origin is its greatest asset and its biggest weakness. As an advertisement for league it just reminds viewers it's a game of strength in NSW and QLD. Rugby needs to expand its national foot print not shrink it.
I hope the concept dies quickly.
If revenue is the motivator, find something else. Super rugby 7s for example.

Micheal

Nicholas Shehadie (39)
When is this to be played?

Could you have another gimmicky series like "The Best vs. the Rest" after the Super Rugby season.

E.g. if the Tahs top the conference, should they play a combined team from the other franchises over a three game series?

Champion team vs. a team of champions?

p.Tah

John Thornett (49)
Another alternative idea.
No idea if the timing would work: Super Rugby XV (minus internationals) vs European XV (English, Celtic, French comps) focus is barbarian style play.
