Fulltime domestic Women's Sevens Competition from 2017

Article in the SMH reporting that there will be a Fulltime domestic women's sevens tournament from 2017, it will be 8 teams of 20 teams run as a joint venture between the ARU and Australian University Sportand run in August..a men's tournament will look to launch in 2018..

I think the idea is that it will be a university alligned competition, similar to the model which was previously mooted for the NRC

8 teams. What are the likely unis with facilities?

UQ and Bond Uni are obvious. Sydney Uni too. I assume Melbourne Uni as well to keep the Buildcorp brand together.

Are there facilities at Canberra Uni? Where else in Sydney?

A Griffith Uni / Sunnybank partnership could be another option up here. Sunshine Coast Uni too.

I reckon those 6 or 7 would be givens considering there attachment to rugby at the moment. Western Sydney University would make sense considering the ARU Plan that was put out, UNSW would work as well with someone like Randwick, depending if they want clubs involved at all. Or there could be a leftfield option like an Adelaide or NQ university. I think putting a team in JCU would be a good idea to grow the game in Townsville, with the idea to push for a Premier team in QPR in a few years time.

Can't see Townsville ever joining QPR but it's a good option for 7s but we really need to consolidate talent so accommodation costs aren't high which may rule out wa.

Based on current investment and results in the sporting fields related to unisports, these are the current leaders:

Sydney Uni
Bond
Griffith
UTS
Monash
Uni of WA
RMIT
Uni of Melbourne

in addition you have those Uni's with strong rugby union pedigree like UQ.. Ideally there would be a team from all the states..

The article mentions opening up to bids for between 6-10 teams. Which is interesting. I like the idea and especially like its linking to Universities. Contrary to what some may like to suggest Uni's are the elitist institutions they were once perceived to be. What they do offer is access to facilities and sports science.

As for the Uni's that could be involved. I think it would be reasonable to think UQ, Bond, USYD, UMELB, UCan and UWA are most likely. I'd like to see Western Sydney University get a squad as would I like to see my Uni of UOW. But it's, unlikely. Either way come next year we could a solid 6-10 circuit up and running.

You would have to imagine that if this were to succeed then we'll likely see the same occur for the mooted mens xompetition in 2018. Being based around Uni's likely the same that put their hand up for the womens. Another I'd like to see evolved would be an elite Universities comp for the 15 a side game as the next step in the development pathway. A place to funnel all the best talent that emerges via Schoolboys and Clubs and provide them with elite level training. I think it would be a very attractive proposition for many players and likely help us retain many who move across to League for the opportunity to train in high performance environments.

Brilliant. Thanks for that. Was waiting for an update. It will be interesting to see who gets the teams. I know Sunny Coast Uni were keen as well and have a decent domestic women's 7s comp happening out there at the moment. Emmy Sykes is a Sunny Coast gal, so that could help too.

Will be great to get some more details as I've been wondering how this has been progressing. Certainly interested to see who will be involved and exact number of teams announced. Having watched the recent Nationals there's probably enough talent to fill out 8 teams relativrly comfortably. That's not taking into account those recruited externally.

Hopefully alongside these squads there are plans afoot to work with the Uni's to look to engage not only with the student communities on each campus but also the wider community as a whole.

when is the women's AFL season (he asks knowing full well he can just google it).

I wonder if you could have a team including
- a couple of Aussie stars
- a handful of established state level/back up Aussies
- a handful of the young stars coming through.
- one or two 'development players' (rather than marquee). Basically cross-code opportunities? Kind of like Ash Barty (a tennis player) was for in the WBBL last year?

CH9 news described her as a "cricketer turned tennis player" on the news last night......I guess winning junior Wimbledon and making the final of a grand slam doubles tournament means nothing once you have played cricket

Yeah so it will feature 8 teams, with Bond and Griffith Uni now confirmed, here's the rest from that article:

“ARU contracted players will be distributed among the eight teams along with the requirement that 50% of the team will be made up by university students.

“Having seen how many Griffith players were in the Australian University team in November, we are going to be well positioned, particularly with our collaborative approach,’’ he said.

“We’re partnering with Sunnybank Rugby and Griffith Colleges rugby clubs, so it’s another step in the right direction of being a stand-out sports university.
