Scotch will go into this weekend's nationals as favourites to take out the Barrington Cup in many peoples minds. However i believe the Shore crew has the experience and horse power to take out back to back championships. All will be revealed in a weeks time. I'd love to hear everyone else take on my view whether you agree or disagree.
Shore will be desperate to take the crown from the victorian imposters .

Scotch did a 5:49 on saturday. Shore winning will certainly be a surprise
Gunning for shore to pull it out of the fire over the last 500m. Its a big ask but i can feel it in my bones

I can't see it happening personally. The 2017 crew do not look anywhere near as dominant as the 2016 crew, and one must wonder about the effect of the Year 13 factor on the crew. Still, I'll have my eyes out on the Paramatta River, but unless Shore has made some notable change or have some new battle plan, it should be rather by the books.

Just my two cents

It's true that everything points to a Scotch victory; however as we have seen in the past, anything can happen on race day, even if you are the unbackable favourite. You can bet Scotch will be checking and re-checking their equipment this time around.

eh, they attended most if not all of the regattas at SIRC, don't see how you could say what they've done is wrong without commenting on Kinross or Radford or CGG. Kinross have proved in the past they can attend every regatta, but this year attended only HOTR, which I think is poor form from such a strong program.

Anyone familiar with this forum knows I am no fan of Kinross but my beef with their strategies is confined to schoolboy events where they deliberately enter lower divisions despite having a thriving program.

I would hardly think you could insist that Canberra should attend every weekly regatta in Sydney.

Queenwood have always done as they pleased. For several years they played games with entries, dividing their top rowers into fours, quads etc despite having eights. It was a way of denying other eights the opportunity to race them, gauge their quality, observe their race plans over the course of the season and potentially improve. When IGSSA finally took action and made a rule to curtail that kind of unsportsmanlike behaviour, Queenwood simply stopped attending a significant chunk of regattas each season. Last year it was seven regattas, this year it was five. If every school adopted Queenwood's attitude, the weekly regattas would be pathetic. Yes, it's within the rules but it's morally reprehensible.

I'd be happy to see a cumulative pointscore shield introduced. At the end of the season it would be interesting to see which school had earned the most points through high participation and long term commitment throughout the season.

A certain short lived era is over at at GPS school with the Head of Rowing moving on before the HOTR Regatta. Maybe the passion wasn't quite there.

How many races are there at the GPS HotR? I just checked, 11. How many schools have a crew in every race? Three: Joeys, Newington and Scots. Two years ago there were two: Joeys and King's. Well done, Newington and Scots (and King's in 2015). The travel for Grammar, Scots and King's is onerous to say the least. Let's hope the rowing programs at these three schools continues to pick up.

I've thought for some time both Joeys and Riverview should be much better at rowing than they've been since the GPS was founded; to have their rowing sheds on site, or close nearby, is a huge advantage compared to trekking across Sydney in afternoon peak hour. And they can easily sneak in a coupa early morning training sessions without eating into teaching time.

Shore, well done, as usual.

The response to that I've heard from a current (coach) is that there's value for the boys to get on the bus together, get off the bus together, get on the water together etc. Even if the boys roll up in dribs and drabs a few minutes apart at Joeys or Iggies, five to ten minutes delay could have been 2kms down the river training.

Hats off to Loreto N for a great performance on Saturday.. they had a solid season and despite the hassles of training at SIRC came second overall.

They must have been thickly insulated walls. It was publicly announced following Head of the River. Oh, and the new Head of Rowing appointed too.

Obviously your eyes IV The Win weren't to sharp. What a race in heat one for Shore today beating scotch in a blistering time of 547. Conditions were fast but an awesome battle between the two pinnacle rowing schools. Cant wait for the final on sunday, anyone wanting to change their predictions?

You and me both are wishing I could see into the future. I'm thinking we will see a big first 500 from melbourne grammar, not letting scotch get the better of them like it appears that they have every time since state champs. Shore are obvious favourites right now, but anything can happen on the day

Scotch wins in a blistering time in benign conditions - but pumped about Kings Cup with NSW crew containing 3 rowers from Shore that I watched grow from boys to men. One of their dads will be smiling from above.

Scotch rowed really well, very controlled race. Not sure if anyone noticed but there were some significant changes to the Shore boats again this weekend. Seems to have affected the 2nd boat most because they were well off the pace compared to HOTR and their training efforts where the boats have been really close.
Expect Shore 1st viii to be very strong again next year. Some key Yr11's in the 1st and 2nd crews plus a strong cohort coming through from the iv's.
