I think there must have been some pretty strong evidence that Khawaja wasn't up to it in those conditions for him to be overlooked after such a strong summer.

While I agree it's a shame that the Marsh experiment (perhaps predictably) failed, I think it should speak volumes that Maxwell came in at 6 before Khawaja had a chance. The very few overs Maxwell bowled should suggest that on batting alone they still saw Maxwell as the stronger option.

Khawaja will be straight back in for the Ashes and hopefully we look to young guys like Lehmann and Cartwright before we consider SMarsh again.

It's a while away but the 15 man squad for the Ashes I'd like to see:
Warner (on thin ice), Renshaw, Smith, Khawaja, Handscomb, Maxwell, Starc, Cummins, Hazlewood, SO'K, Lyon, Sayers, Nevill, Cartwright, and one of Lehmann or Pattinson.

No doubt Wade will be there which I think is a shame.

Who were the first choice keepers for the Shield sides?

P Nevill (NSW)
S Gotch (Vic)
A Carey (SA)
J Peirson (QLD)
S Whiteman (WA)
B Dunk (Tas)

C Hartley (QLD) was first choice for most of the shield season but has now retired. Obviously Wade and Handscomb were ahead of Gotch for Vic.

C Bancroft (WA) is another worth mentioning.

If I had to pick out of those above it would be Nevill then Whiteman.

Carey is the future. I think he will leap frog a few and be in the Aussie team sooner than we expect.

Light, imo when fit Pattinson must come straight back into the squad. Still think he is the best of this current crop of fast bowlers (even allowing that Starc has been the world's best in his absence). At least the four quicks can be rotated, although I'd be tempted to play them all against the Poms.

If this pace continues as it is I predict good things from this Aussie team in the near future. Just need to shore up the batting now.

It's likely to be either Harper (who has a long term concussion) or Ludeman for Victoria going into next season, what with Wade gone to Tassie.

That is an impressive record with the gloves but I have one or two question marks about his ability with the bat.

In 17 FC matches he averages 23.86. Highest score of 79 and averaging 45 balls faced per innings.

Compare that to Nevill (40.22) who despite being very good with the gloves was dropped for a lack of runs, and Wade (38.28) who is perceived as a good batsman but has average glove work. Whiteman (34.64) who is younger than Carey, has three first class tons, 50 FC appearances, and averages 63 balls faced per innings.

In my mind our keeper should be first and foremost clinical behind the stumps, which Carey has proven to be. However, he certainly needs to lift that batting average.

Last-day washout of the third NZ v SA Test when we had them 80-5 & still 95 behind means SA stay second in the Test Rankings behind India & ahead of your blokes. Big difference in the prize money: 1st $US 1Mn, 2nd $US 500K, 3rd $US 200K. So in a way Hamilton's shitty weather has cost CA ~ $400K. Sorry 'bout that but said shitty weather does generally originate from over your ways..........

My proposed ashes team for 2017:

1. Renshaw
2. Warner
3. Khawaja
4. Smith (c)
5. Handscomb
6. Maxwell/Faulkner/Christian/Weatherald/Lehmann
7. Nevill
8. Starc
9. Hazelwood
10. Sayers/Bird
11. Lyon/O'Keefe

Not bad. Small number of comments:

First: No room for Cummins or Pattinson? Bird has played well in the side and Sayers has been brilliant in the shield, but having one of those two takes pressure off Starc (Hazelwood just does his own thing regardless, so it doesn't matter)

Secondly: You've put up a lot of options for number 6, but don't include Cartwright (av 53.81) who I think would be the front runner at the his moment, particularly given the form of some of your alternatives (Faulkner 30.77, Christian 29.50, Weatherald 31.70, Lehmann 40.70 but no bowling ability) Hell, Finch is in better first class form than Lehmanm.

That's about it. Wade will be in the mix because he didn't single handedly lose any tests in India, but I disagree with that so meh.

Cartwright's bowling is a bit shit.

Although, he would be a good specialist batsman @ 6

True.

But should the consideration have not extended beyond selecting an all rounder?

A genuine 6th batsman, who can been thrown the ball if necessary, like Cartwright & Maxwell or maybe even Henriques, provides genuine structure and necessary depth to the batting line up.

Alternatively, if a 5th bowler is absolutely necessary, pick a 5th bowler! Having 3, or even 4 of Hazelwood, Starc, Pattinson and Cummins in the side is a wicked pace attack, and the latter two are very good bats, while Starc is nearly good enough to be a Bowling All rounder!

Cummins has to be there if fit. To bowl the way he did on those pitches in India suggests to me that he could be something very special. Starc is a no-brainer and Hazlewood is too consistent to drop.

The fourth bowler will depend on the pitch but I'd say it will come down to Lyon, SO'K (my choice), and Pattinson. Bird and Sayers are probably hindered by their lack of pace but would be good replacements if Hazlewood needs a rest. At this point the only ground I would consider two spin options would be the SCG.

As for the 6 spot I think Maxwell deserves an extended run in Australian conditions before we talk about other options. He's clearly the best batting all-rounder in the country and impressed in India (which is no easy feat). Head and Faulkner could enter the discussion next year.

Cartwright has been batting at 3 for WA and scoring runs for fun so I don't see why he can't be a top 5 batsman in test cricket. Wouldn't bother me in the slightest if he bowls or not.

Lehmann is a good shout too but I think a new coach would be needed before he got a baggy green (media would jump on that as a conflict of interest).

Yep, either Cummins or Pattinson in for Sayers/Bird, but I'd still seriously consider both of them with a 4 pronged pace attack.

Cartwright would be next off the rank I'd think, but can't see Maxwell being dropped now after the India tests.

EDIT : Just saw your later post - covers pretty much the same ground.

SOK has another incident on the booze.

This will probably be the biggest reason he remains the second choice spinner for Australia.

Gaz can get out on the dancefloor with the public and not cause any trouble.

Sure is interesting that our two best spinners of the last 20 years have caused trouble both on and off the pitch.

Meanwhile we select a bloke who's reputation is based off internet meme's and is ironically nicknamed after an acronym specifically designed to take the piss (no pun intended).

Even if SO'K was to never play another test I'd still prefer to retire with his statistics than Lyon's.

Did Stuart MacGill have off field problems?
