Fair point. he was very anti sport esp rugby. I was there just as he retired so didn't see too much of him.
His successor was more apathetic though i recall he had a breakdown with the teaching staff. The old guard (laurie f and others) told me all about his failings at a reunion recently

One of them was he could not teach according to a Grammar student and a teacher who I knew. He would read commentaries on English literature without any ability to engage his students. Intellectually, he might have had talent as an academic, professionally as a Headmaster & Teacher he left a lot to be desired. Equally, his Leadership and Management style was not at all impressive.

However, the fault was really with Grammar's School Council of the period ,who placed him in a position he was ill-suited for in terms of, training (He was not trained as a Teacher) or his absence of passionate sporting interests. expected of a GPS Headmaster.

As an Academic he should have stayed in the rarefied atmosphere of academia. Where as a lecturer his style of presentation was more suited.

Wow B&W,

That is fantastic news and again shows a resurgence can happen.

I posted a similar story about Waverley on the CAS site, no new resurgence in numbers as yet BUT a new rugby focused Head of School, who is doing the rounds each week across the younger age groups to ascertain what we need.

At last some good news, trust you might be at Queens Park at 3.15 for the 1sts XV game on Sat?
Very much so, of particular interest is the efforts of your Head. The U/13s at Waves are looking very powerful with strong wins over Kings and Shore. Clearly, his interest is paying dividends. As I mentioned its leadership, regrettably too many headmasters seen then selves as nothing more than "Bean Counters".

This is reflected in poor rugby results by these culturally incompatible Heads who belong else where. To be a Head of a GPS/Associated school, there must be a intrinsic love of sport to complement the Academic, Spiritual and Cultural development of our students. To many of the current heads, pay lip service to sport, particularly Rugby. AJ Rae my Old Headmaster coached the 12As, Jika Travers coached the 1st XV at Shore. Maybe a little less of being CEO mangers by our Heads and instead " Hands on leadership" effort is needed . Yes, its Old School but the boys love it and feel something special when the head takes interest by coaching them.

Ross Tarlington the retiring Principal at Joeys coaches the 13Gs. And has for a number of years.

The School 2nds ran the water for the 13Gs and cheered these boys on during their game last weekend.

The 13Gs beat Waverley 13Fs 17-10.

I am sure the boys had a ball. Now that is school spirit and a celebration of the collective success of all teams.

B&W,

Couldn't put it any better. Superb summary of reality.

The answer then, going forward, is what body appoints each and every new Head Of School, and this is what counts.

When up at Kings recently I talked to many Kings dads/old boys and they were particularly unhappy about Andrew Parry NOT being appointed.
I was a mate of his younger brother, a wonderful family, and I am know

Andrew embodies the KINGS philosophy completely and has the right CV.
but...

Azzuri and others may agree here!

In the catholic system the number of Christian Bros and Jesuits are almost nil. So now there are head offices who call the shots, without living/breathing the culture of a particular school, so when a new Head is appointed there MAY be a risk to the century old culture.

The new man at Kings comes from a school in Perth. I think you'll find that there was a split on the board between Parry and the new guy and the clergy beat the old boys in the vote.

Understand and the same applies for our catholic schools.

Look the OLD boys don't run the business and aren't close enough to it to intimately understand the finer points.

BUT I am sure you know and will agree, there are many OLD Boys who have/do run huge businesses, so they do understand how to run a successful business. I would argue the depth of knowledge within the OLD BOYS is greater in this area, anyway..

That is NOT to say that these schools/businesses aren't complex.

The difference appears to me is the religious component, which by nature is designed so it can't be out argued ie not based on fact but belief.
So logic goes out the window.

BUT every time real $ help is needed its back to the old base, which is fine, but you can't ask on one hand and ignore on the other.

BUT in reality the OB's will always delivery.

Maybe we should go on STRIKE, like the bus drivers!

Scots also brought a new man from a school in Perth in 2007. That certainly shook up student/athlete selection processes.
I am predicting a similar upsurge in comments on the sporting scholarships thread regarding Kings in the near future.

Although I think that Dr L is a very different type of person to Tony George.

Dr L rowed and played rugby for Oxford and sport is very high in his thinking.

You'll struggle to find sport being mentioned at Mr George's last post at St Stephen's School in Perth.

In another similarity, I believe he has a Brother in Law currently applying for a plumb job at Kings as well. But I am told there is no question, he is the best qualified and best applicant.

Absolutely correct QH. The churchies on the school council effectively put paid to his candidacy in favour of one of their own kind, another churchie. Andrew was superbly qualified, balanced in his views on education and sport, had the overwhelming support of OB's and the general school community and absolutely prepared to take the school to the next level. No "buts" about it

I gather Joeys has finalised their new Headmaster ... a Mexican ... south of the border ... from the prestigious Xavier College.

In 2018 Joeys might have an expanded AFL offering?!

Although I seriously doubt it ... if anyone can hold soccer at bay ... it is Joeys.

PS Hope that number 6 from Joeys is Ok ... I know he is young (16As in 2016) ... and never like to see kids down for the count.

With this pending rain event ... my guess is QP gets closed and match of round will be at Bellevue Hill ... with a boggy track helping Knox's slim chances.

SDW,

Rain or otherwise, I would be very surprised if QP1 is closed for the 1sts/2nds.

I can't recall it ever being closed for these 2 teams, BUT I did miss a few years!

You may have noticed that there have been some blogs on the trials for the last few weeks - with (mainly) CAS and GPS schools playing each other.

There is another round tomorrow and the last round is the following weekend.

On Sat 3rd June there is a a trial between GPS schools only and on June 17th the GPS comp starts.

If anybody would like to write on any GPS trial or competition game please let me know here and I will add you to the writing list.

There's a limit on the number of words - just 500; so it's not too hard, in fact folks find it hard to limit the words to 500 once they get started.

How about it? Let me know here and I can add you to the trial writing list and you can read all the guff.

Cheers,

LG

Joeys already have at least 2 AFL teams.

Xavier College is one of about 10 schools that play Rugby seriously in Melbourne, with at least 6 teams. So he will most likely be familiar with Rugby as a game and may have even been involved with Xavier's Rugby Program. The Victorian Rugby community has reputation for being small, but extremely dedicated to their game. So who knows he maybe very supportive of Rugby.

And apparently the gentleman was at Riverview prior to Xavier.

EDIT He's in fact spent most of his career in Jesuit schools, which makes the Joeys appointment and interesting one.:)
