With New sitting this one out, no Bye rounds for any of the 8 teams.

Good that one of the Comps is getting underway for some chocolates!

Settle down precious, I just stated a Fact for the uninformed who were not present at the game and who may have been thinking why the game so close. Maybe if you articulated Joeys were missing several good players, you did indicate you 'was aware', I would not have created the post.

Agreed. Cooerwall Aacademy and St Pats Goulburn no longer exist and Stannies and All Saints are now and ISA schools so it seems like long standing traditions (and members) can still come and go.

I infer it is part of a desire to provide sides with even matches - which is what the different structure was intended to achieve, I think.
It happened last week in 1s -2s at SJC did it not?
If so, and if it sticks this is a new world order which is going to drive those calling for a Super Bowl play off, promotion and relegation and unlimited rounds, to distraction but, but it will provide the kids this is actually about with closer rugby than is produced by coincidences of history 100+ years ago

Barker have played Joeys 2nds and 3rds in consecutive weeks. Not sure if this is what Joeys had in mind when pushing for change.

All Saints and I believe Stannies never joined GPS. Just attended a few meetings and thought about it.

Mate, couldn't agree more. Waverley not getting much out of putting on 50 and 60 points each week against the best GPS can put up. Looking forward to getting back to the CAS where at least there's something to play for. Beating scholarship kids at 30K +/year schools is kinda fun the first time you do it, but then it becomes boring. The working class boys beat the hooray henrys also looks good as a one-off headline but embarrassing when it becomes normal fare. Anyway, from the sound of it you only put trial teams out on the paddock each week so little wonder the scores have been so lopsided. Even more reason for Waverley to forego these trials with over-rated GPS teams in the future. There's the real possibility that if there's too much interaction Waverley will be brought down to their level and start playing bash 'n barge, pick 'n drive just like the 'music scholarship' kids do. Better to live in our own make-believe world where running rugby is what schoolboys is all about.

Far more of a historian than me.
But it was an 8-team comp into 2009 when High withdrew, with the two rounds only being introduced in 2013 after Grammar also dropped.

Grammar last won in 67 and High in 73.
Grammar has more premierships that both Shore and Newington !

Gee QH, and you accused me of wading in to wind people up unnecessarily. I don't give a toss whether they win or lose as long as it's a competitive match. Having effectively been told by you and your ilk for some time now that CAS dont deserve to be on the same pitch as GPS teams, It's pleasing to see the standard of Rugby being played by both associations in these trials and the spirit of the boys towards each other. We could probably all take a leaf from that book.

With resumption of normal transmission, I thought that I should accept Crackerjack’s implied invitation to comment on the first round of the GPS thirds competition. The extended trials across CAS and ISA schools sometimes played in multiple combinations of schools and levels makes for a complex set of results. I spent multiple hours, hours that I fear I will never recover, trawling though various forums to try to get a complete set of results for the top grades. Even now gaps remain and I am sure that there are errors. Corrections gratefully accepted.

There is only one question this year. Can anybody beat St Joseph thirds? During the preseason, Joeys beat Barker Firsts 35-22. Trinity Firsts 27-22 and Waverley Seconds 38-12. I’m inclined to say no, although I look forward to being proved wrong!

Iggies v TAS

In the pre-season, Iggies lost to Kings Thirds 22-5, Newington Thirds 13-10 and, I think to Scots, although I could not find the results. TAS lost to Kinross Firsts 35-9 and then defeated High 41-0 followed by Farrer 64-0. Earlier, a reportedly under strength Newington Firsts defeated Kinross Firsts by around 38-5, suggesting a 60-70 point gap between TAS Firsts and Newington Firsts.

Based on these results, TAS is likely to be competitive, but the team has not really had hard game play in the lead-up to this first competition match and remains something of an unknown. We won’t know until the match. TAS to win, but …

Kings v Scots

A key match. With preseason wins against Iggies (22-5), Shore (19-0) and Knox Thirds (21-0), Kings looks strong. I couldn’t find all the Scots scores. I think Scots defeated Knox Thirds 17-7 and also Iggies Thirds, but also lost to Joeys’ Fourths 21-5.

Kings to win.

Joeys v Grammar
This is another interesting match for it will give us a first indication of Joeys’ absolute strength within the Thirds competition framework.

Grammar has had a fairly torrid start to the season, losing to Trinity Firsts 28-8, Cranbrook Firsts 22-12. Aloysius Firsts 54-15 and St Pats Firsts 28-8. On the other side of the ledger, Grammar defeated Barker Seconds 24-7. Since Joeys defeated Trinity Firsts 27-22, Grammar’s loss to the same team suggests a gap of around 25 points between the two teams.

Grammar will start the sentimental favourite and by all accounts hassome good players, although the team hasn’t quite jelled yet. However, Joeys’ has to be strongly favoured to win.

High v Shore
High has something of a miserable start in the preseason games, loosing 41-9 to TAS Firsts and then 80-0 to Aloysius Firsts in a match called off in the 47th minute. I think High is stronger than these results would suggest, but it’s not a good start.


Shore is another team that I don’t have full results for. Shore lost to Kings Thirds 19-0, but then drew 17-7 with Joeys Fourths, the team that had previously beaten Scots. On the results to date, Shore has to classed as favourite in this match.

I have doubts about grammar this year. Beaten by the weaker Cas schools is a bad omen against a likely very good SJC team.

What is happening with View this year - there are far too many quality players in their line up to be having 50 odd points scored against them regularly?

I agree. The squad has a lot of talent but they are not playing as a team. They have had a lot of injuries and line up changes over the last 4 weeks but I think most teams would have this. Too many mistakes across the paddock suggests a real lack of communication amd teamwork. The pack is small but the scrum was reasonable against Kings and competed well at the breakdown. In the last 2 games they have conceded a lot of points out wide after multi phase ball which suggest their organisation in defence needs a lot of work. Coaches have a ton of issues to sort out and I hope things improve for the boys sake or this will be a long season.
