They thought it was a break yesterday. Very sad news for the kid if confirmed after the potential he had for CAS games in the coming weeks.

Bad news for him, CAS and I was assuming NSW.
Hopefully they got it wrong yesterday.
We'll see.

Aloys had a dominant win over trinity over the weekend 38-7. It was their toughest win so far, with trinity coming at them physically the whole game, but the Aloys defence was almost flawless besides a weak try from the trinity 9 towards the back end of the game, where he sniped around the ruck and dived over. Notable performances were that of the Aloys 15 Ben Pollack (young for year 11), whom did a fantastic job as the last line of defence as well as shutting down Trinity's go to man, Byron, and the back row of Aloys, who did well to slow down the ball from the breakdown, and their offload game is to be commended. Alex Rahme was back to his dominant best scoring a try and leading the forward pack in terms of physicality developing himself as one of the most destructive ball runners in the competition, accompanied by the workhorse of the team Tom Partington. Alex Disano was also fantastic, scoring a neat try as well as providing crisp service to the 10, he was also a running threat from the ruck gaining some quality meters. All in in all quality game from the Aloys team, however they face a massive task this week against Waverley.

hmmm .... Round 1 kicks off, this weekend and it is going to be a lot more interesting than what many expected ... with early pundits (including yours truly) expecting a 2 horse race.

Given how dominant Aloys were in their win (over Trinity), and similarly how strong Barker were over Cranbrook (albeit an injury depleted, and underage Brook) ... I think it is relatively safe to assume that Knox will easily account for Cranbrook, and Barker will easily (although not as easily) account for Trinity.

All of which leaves Waverley versus Aloys as the SDW match of the round.

1 week ago, Waverley were on a high, having knocked off Joeys and Newington

however a week is a long time in schoolboy rugby and the school holiday break cannot come quick enough for Waverley

with Waverley team rehab looking like a starting XV (Hardaker/Towns/F.Wright/Cornish/ Wallace) Aloys might just fancy their chances

so a lot will hinge on who is back, and how fit they are ... Hardaker and Towns I would say are no chance

however I think Waverley will field enough of their big guns ... and that along with the home ground advantage, should be enough to see Waverley get home in a match that will be a lot closer than some might expect

might even come down to Donaldson's kicking

The final score flattered Joeys - however they were deserving winners due to their fewer mistakes in the end.

For me the most noticeable things were:

1. The Knox lads could not keep up with the pace of the game in the second half - they were sucking in seagulls. Joeys were fitter and ran Knox ragged at the end.

2. Knox could not handle the back three of Joeys in the second half including a guy from the 2s who came on - but 1. was probably part of that too.

PS - A few days ago I saw the 2017 CAS fixtures on their website but all I can get now is the old 2016 info.

Anybody got a link?

Who is playing this week (home team first)?

PPS - thanks to SDW and leftrightout16 for their info on Cranbrook for the season preview.

Anybody got some bullet points for Aloys? need it today.

Nick Frost - yes excellent game again. He is having a great year.

Waratahstowin, I have to disagree with you re Frost on Saturday. I have watched a number of his games over the past 2 years and by his high standards, I actually thought he was disappointing/quiet.

He is generally an asset (weapon) on lineout ball but he was quiet. He also didn't take one catch off a Joeys line out feed.

I personally felt that # 4 Tom Humphrey had a better all round game for Knox. Frost missed tackles and was ineffective at the breakdown.

If you want evidence, check out sidesteppas footage.

What's my point? All players have good days and bad days. Yes he is having a great year but Saturday was not an "excellent" game for Frost. He is human.

Agree, the other bloke was better last Saturday, and Yates from Joeys (and Combined States last year) was close to MOTM for me.

I always like the athleticism of Frost but on most of the occasions I've seen him, I've wished he'd show more grunt in the tight stuff.

Still, mine is a small sample.

Couldn't agree more LG. Also agree with you on Yates as MOTM or at least best forward from both teams. Yates has been outstanding in the trials I have seen.

A big contrast in game styles between Frost and Yates. For a big unit Yates is very mobile, a strong runner with ball in hand and great at the breakdown.

As much as i love my waves boys, i can not see them beating barker this year. They play a very similar game and i believe waves are a better side but on the day when they run out there at hornsby with that home ground advantage that gave them edge to win in '06. I feel Wright will be outdone by upcoming star Billy Pollard and i feel Harry Flaherty will outmuscle Lucy Morrety when it comes to scrum time and contact. Barker is on top at the moment and i don't see them moving.

Fairly footage of Joeys v Knox >>

Thanks for the video. It was a scrappy affair but Joeys looked good when they controlled the ball.

From what I noticed:
For Joeys, the big 5 will cause some damage if he's fit and can get his hands on the ball more.
15 and 14 looked slick and what about the tackle from 18 when he came on. That's the way to do it. The 12's got some skill.
I like the 9 but he looked even better when he went on some darting runs from the ruck to vary the attack.

For Knox, the 15 is a nippy little customer and the 10 did some good things.

Armchair/ Lee - I think your observations regarding Tom Humphrey are fair. In hindsight, I cant really disagree. Humphrey did have a very good game, and based on recent performances he should be pressing for CAS firsts selection. I think at the time of writing, I was just very impressed with the Knox lineout in which Mr Frost played an important role. Everyone sees the game through a different lens - I cant argue with your alternate/ aditional opinions.

Good attempt wavesfordayzz, clearly you are a strong Waverley supporter and are close to the team, thus your knowledge.
Unfortunately there isn't a team member called Lucy (last time I checked that was a girls name) Morrety.

Barker may well be in the mix to win but they will need to improve when I last saw them v the Joeys 2nd.

Bring you Blue and Red scarf to the game at Hornsby(with a H), should be a beauty!

Ha Ha ... Lucy Morety ... ironically that might be the way this Waverley team could be beaten ... by baiting them.

What has set this Waverley side apart from others, is how disciplined they have been.

I think Knox and/or Barker are most likely to successfully try the baiting game ... I guess time will tell

for what its worth I rate Reimer, and he looked very good against Cranners ... however how he fares against Moretti and Cornish, will be the litmus test

We are looking for writers for GAS games this year - especially for Aloys, Cranbrook and Trinity.

If you are interested, and I hope that you are, please let us know in this thread and we will contact you. Also advise us about what school you want to cover.

We won't use you for more than two games - maybe one will do.

Please help.

Thank you.
