2017 Under-20 Competitions including Oceania & World U20s

Yeah he will. A few considerations (not excuses);

1. The wind did play a factor. Would of been 15-20 knots by the end of the game.
2. Time game was played. These kids have been there 5 days, may of been sluggish playing at night at effectively 2.30 am.
3. That was the first game they have played together. Remember Stewart, contracted players (3) and 7's players did not play Oceania or together before. And there were 4 of them in the backs: hence some errors.

Now I know I'll get well there professional or should be used to this; but the truth is that they aren't; they r young men (most 19-20) in my eyes still kids. Give them a little latitude ok?

Thought the win was gritty, showed pride in the jersey and you always felt they were in it, weren't going to give up. A solid performance from me with more excitement to come.

Agreed 100%.

My summary of the match was that we deserved the result, always looking the most likely to break the game open. However the Welsh were very gritty and a 7 point margin was the correct result.

The Welsh did get their first try off a 2-3m knock on in the build up (the reffing was fairly ordinary over all games). The yellow to Australia i don't have many complaints, however 5 years ago it would of been a 'good' tackle and they also got an absolutely ridiculous 3 points from a penalty for Perese going high (which was a TMO intervention, clearly showed he wrapped arms and didn't get any higher than a nipple in the tackle, but the ref felt obliged to give something).

Wales were a good test, they themselves played a solid game and will be anything but a push over to the English on Weds.

Well yeah, there was lots of posts suggesting that it's a big risk trying to slot these players in at the last minute (including those that missed the Oceania Tournament due to Super Rugby).

I thought Kennewell struggled a bit last night. I thought he was the least threatening of the outside backs.

His yellow card was pretty unlucky as that big tackle certainly stopped a try but he did get the player beyond horizontal.

Ok fair point; however were more worry about just slamming them together right before the tournament as it hasn't worked too well in the last few years.

Was anyone else having a chuckle about how often the Welsh were going down and sending their medics on?

If I was a cynical man, I'd say they were trying to slow the game down because nobody was ever actually taken off through injury or very affected by it. Lucky I'm not.

That was amazing that he said it went backwards.

And no video review just to cover his own ass. The one that had me spitting my breakfast out was the Perese 'high' tackle. I couldn't believe that was given. Prime example of the game being stopped and to cover their bums they had to give something for it otherwise why was the game stopped?

An aside for followers for QLD GPS rugby: Churchie supporters who loved our victorious 2014 1st XV will be smiling with the constituents of this U20s team......but has Reece Hewat (Nudgee Captain 1st XV that year) forgiven them yet for that rainy day on Main Oval when Kalyn Ponga (and others I might add) ran rings around his team?

If Stewart is the best hope of the squad at 10 there are major issues and little hope. Indecisive,error ridden and dangerous options. Bar Perese's one significant moment of class a draw was likely and Stewart was the causal link.
On positives the hooker was great, Front row depth is excellent. Back row offers plenty of options and impact. Both half backs looked good.

Need another 10 option urgent

Stewart is comfortably the best 10 in the squad.

If his kicking had been better no one would be complaining about his game.

His passing was good and we got width on the ball often and the 5m channels on both sides was generally where we made our biggest inroads.

Is Mack Mason (ex QLD now with Tahs) beyond the age range? Logically year by year re his GPS school compatriots in this U20s team he would be now U20, but maybe not.

He's better than Stewart (at this stage of their playing careers anyway) IMO.

Mason turned 20 in January 2016.

My understanding of the age cut off is that you have to be 19 still on the first of January of the year of the tournament.

I.e. for this year, players born on or after 1 January 1997 are eligible.

I like Stewart, thought his passing was extremely crisp and infront of the man. Apart from a few errors with kicking in extremely windy conditions his overall game was good. Overall the team was good and looked threatening against a very well drilled and professional Welsh outfit. I'll go out on a limb and say Stewart is the best 10 we have had at u20s for a number of seasons.

Back row were the best, along with Perese.

Of the rest, I liked the games of Uelese, Stewart when he was keeping it simple, and the reserve tighthead.

As a very preliminary assessment, I'd say Cron is making a key difference vs the hapless U20s coaching regime of many previous campaigns.

The team this year seems more coherent, more confident, less error prone, better ensemble play and less one-out attempts at hero plays.

Stewart set the backs off pretty well for mine, the fact that they've got 2 carry-first backs in the centres (a crash ball centre and a winger) probably stilted the ball going wide. But, Stewart beat the "defensive corner" and put the Welsh under pressure numerous times. He also covered on D pretty well.

The wind was completely fucked, so I can excuse bad kicking providing it isn't there next game.

My surprise of the game was LHP Cody Walker, having never really noticed him before in any games I've seen. Held a scrum down well and kept busy.
