The refereeing in the Aussie game was average. the tmo tried to get aussie 13 red carded for a normal Tackle. The ref ended up Just awarding a penalty because he couldnt see it. Penalising a scrum feed not Strait when aussie had a mile dominant scrum as well.

Wales second try came from a scrum and the feed was fed into the second row.

The passing to and fro was much like you would see in a Sevens game, we will need to attack the line with a switch or a run off the inside shoulder if we want to surprise England at all. It was very one dimensional play by the backline last night. Perese needs to hold onto the ball in contact. I'd still prefer to see him on the wing. You can see the backline players are new to each other. It's a pity they never got together for the Oceania games, may have been a different team then. Hope they click before the England game.

I'm reserving judgment.
I don't know if it is clicking they lack.
Wales looked ok at times but I fear they are a long way short of England and Nz.
At the risk of channeling my old mate shiggins some of the officiating is woeful: strip on Hutchison was "no clear release" in every other game this year; Perese high penalty which started out as a no arms review was highly dubious and the TMO would have been told to pull his head in by a more experienced official; kennewell very unlucky but confirms my view that the slightest lift in a tackle is now undesirable plus the clanger decisions from the NZ game.
Where did they get these blokes from?

Wales second try came from a scrum and the feed was fed into the second row.
And that's not all.

The scrum wheeled a bit away from our blindside flanker but the ball carrier was helped when a Welshman grabbed his arm - and the Wales no. 8 went scooting off down the blindside.

Every team does it a bit because it's hard to spot as the scrum is breaking up.

I was at a schoolboy game recently when Joeys were playing Waverley and the Waverley scrummie dashed over from a 5-metre scrum to score. It was virtually in front of me and I took burst photos for my blog.

The bloke was a good player and will probably play rep footy - but he wasn't that good.

When I was home and looked at the photos earlier in the burst, sure enough, a Waverley guy was holding the arm of the Joeys' flanker as the ball came out of the scrum.

The defender got over to the scrummie but the try was scored in his tackle.

I had a chuckle that those boys could play so old - no doubt the guy that was held had done the same thing.

I was also concerned that there wasn't a single defender in the blind side channel at the scrum. It was wide open for an attack. I know the winger was probably somewhere in the line to counter where his opposite was standing, but there does need to be some compensating positioning, perhaps by the No 9, to close off that channel. ASY (Angus Scott-Young) definitely was impeded but for all that the attack should have been shut down in the end if Stewart had put in an effective tackle on the Welsh No 9.

It was small channel, the 6/8 would've been fine to cover were the 6 not held. From there, you're scambling to cover overlaps and everything's a mess.

Nice to see the current crop of Welsh lads living up to the seniors standards and starting early with last minute defeats to Australia
Seriously though, wasn't particularly impressed by either side. This Welsh batch of U20's has a few good prospects (Ian Botham's grandson @8 has potential but as a 6 or 7) but some glaring holes in terms of quality too.
Australia could & should have won by a bit more.

It was painful watching us attack. We attacked from too deep and passed way before players had committed to tackles and it allowed Wales to comfortably drift. We will get toasted by England unless we can improve our attack.

Too many changes. First team combinations need to have more game time in preparation for the English. However, very good to see Harry Johnson-Holmes get a start. He looks to have great potential for higher honours, along with Uelese.

I suspect they'll finish the game for 20-30.

IS, I recall people saying exactly the same thing leading up to and during the U20s last year. Sad commentary if true, and just when will they fix it so that the best team can take the field from the get go?

Totally agree - but its partly because there seem to be an infinite number of ways in which one can qualify for U20s, including sitting on the bench for Super rugby and playing Shute Shield.
Having Stewart and Joost together makes me think that the touch football/7s style will be in operation again. I would concede it is more effective in securing victories than whatever has been the plan in previous years (I could never really tell) but it won't fool the poms or kiwis.
