My source is pretty reliable, regarding the request for uncontested scrums. Simon Marais (Barker 1st XX 2016) and Matt Graham are up from the 2nds. Two very high quality replacements from Barkers perspective. Both year 12 lads. Big and strong and fast.

I think it's a tough year for Cranbrook.

They have to do what they can to compete.

Barker are one of the leading teams in the competition and I would be willing to put my house on their victory tomorrow.

Cranbrook can't put inexperienced kids in the scrum and I think them standing up for their kids is something any school or parent would do.

Rod/Guys, the scrums were uncontested when Cranbrook played Waves, so it sounds correct, there is a precedent.

I agree totally that player welfare take precedence. I an sure that is the basis for the request.

My question is what if teams started using the uncontested scrum as a tactic to ensure possession for a hot backline. I recall a game Barker had against Aloys 2 years ago, where Barker lost despite having a better scrum because the backs (with big Alex Diamond) got plenty of uncontested ball.

This game started off contested but due to a injury in the Aloys 2nds in the previous game there was no appropriate replacement.

Completely agree with that.

On a more serious note. It wasn't that long ago that Cranbrook put 80 points on Trinity and Knox put 80 or 90 on Aloys in the final round of the longer season (last year or previous?). I felt for Aloys going into that match after slogging it out for 9 rounds. Maybe the scrums were uncontested?

Cranbrook have been well beaten and are particularly small in size from what I have seen, but they've managed to stay in touch 'til half time in some games. Maybe that's the point Rod is making. Nevertheless, Barker easily no matter what the rules.

From the Waverley Sport page. Waverley are definitely not cocky

https://rugbynews.net.au/nsw-schools-waverley-knox-barker-…/

That's great that a news organisation is promoting the game.

And that article just shows the respect between the two schools. They will no doubt be fierce competitors on the field, but they will clap each other off at the end of the match. That respect is the great thing about rugby.

Enjoy your last day year 12 students, take in the atmosphere and good luck to all teams tomorrow.

On another note, in relation to the lower teams, Barker 5ths were due to play Knox 6ths tomorrow. Barker 5ths defeated Knox 5ths last week. Knox have apparently forfeited not wanting to play the Barker 5ths. Granted Barker 5ths have been undefeated this year, beating even Grammar 2nds but this has left a number of Barker Year 12's without a game tomorrow and a bit devastated as a consequence. Knox is not in my good books at the moment. This sucks.

That is unfortunate - an undefeated team not getting a last game/send off, especially for Y12's. But I suppose Knox can see a potential mismatch and had to act.

Maybe. the 5ths have been good - but not that good - winning each game only by 5 to 15 points - no blowouts and only winning against the Knox 5ths last week by a small margin so I dont think it would have been an uncompetitive match - where it has looked like a blow out the coach has played kids out of position in the second half to match it up. Anyways Whinge over, I just feel for the kids. The lower grades love their game too and are often overlooked.

If Knox was worried about a mismatch then why agree to the game in the first place?? Also, why leave it until Friday to forfeit leaving no opportunity to arrange an alternative fixture. Year 12 boys from both schools left without a final game of rugby in their school colours.

Yes my point I guess. Very disappointing. The last game of the season at the end of the school is burned into the memory for 42 years for me. And now those kids will miss it.

Hey, a whinge is good, and no better place than on this forum.
And I agree with you - i'm sure Knox 6th's would been up for it.

Exactly: it's traditional rivalry that has produced some great games over the years and neither team will be giving any quarter tomorrow, but they will shake hands and respect each other after the game. Thats how it should work and what happens on the field stays on the field.

Knox players stuck around last year after being defeated at Queens Park and acted like men. Very commendable.

The Knox school has received a lot of criticism in recent years concerning their professional and serious approach to schoolboy rugby but none of that was ever on the players heads.

A lot of the young men who'll play tomorrow have played against each other since Year 7, and also with each other in Rep teams so they become mates, which obviously doesnt lessen the rivalry on game day, but its one of the great benefits of playing competitive sport.

It was good to read the Waverley coach's reference to having fun. Veeeery interesting.

Anyway, is the Knox toupee story ever going to be told or what?

same with me and I am happy to bore anyone who will listen as to how we beat Joeys 1sts in '79 with a pushover try.

The whole point should be about playing the game for the fun of it and I can assure you the Barker 5ths coach would have moved players around to keep the game competitive. At the very least I think the boys are owed an apology

Yes, its very disappointing. The last game is set up to be special. Photos of the Year 12 team mates are taken after the game etc.
A poor show indeed.
