The more interesting conversation is why have they left Box Hill?? And what has made the boys go to Melbourne?

p.s. why so focused on structure? Yes we need it and it is easy to coach to (and sometimes frustrating) but on the face of, It stifles players' ability and creativity, especially at club level. Rugby is robotic at the best of times, free it up!

Same reason anyone does, we're a better run football club. People convince each other it's money, but really blokes just want a well run rugby club. Well run clubs win games and the players get rep opportunities.

Maybe bad structures do. Good structures just let player know what they're doing and give them a few options.

Pretty sure JC and Patches are still at Moorabbin. I know the Endeavour coach was signed on for 2 years and last year was his first. I can't see BH changing from Noni either, they seemed to play well under him.

Quick list of the clubs

Quins - Pom (assumption)
Melbourne - Tumai (assumption)
Box Hill - Noni (assumption)
Uni - Tyronne (confirmed)
Endeavour - Neil (assumption)
House - Eric Tom and Cole Mooney (confirm https://www.facebook.com/PowerHouseRugby/posts/1740771495935263)
Footscray - I think Tia was signed on for 2 years
Moorabbin - JC and Patches seem to be running pre-season.

Where are we at here?

Quins - Viliamu & Taliu

Melbourne - Tumai & Southwood

Box Hill - Noni & ?

University - Tyronne & ?

Endeavour - ????

House - Eric Tom and Cole Mooney

Footscray - Tia & ???

Moorabbin - JC & Patches

Southy is at Melbourne now? Good for him, he's a good coach and deserves a crack at a DS team. I wonder who is taking over at Eltham.

Sadly clubs with money never think it is about money....whatever the reason, for me it is a shame that they have left Box Hill as they (from the outside) seemed to have a good thing going. Agree. Just we are so focused on them! Coach talent then structure, not structure then talent.

The Melbourne Rebels have extended the organisation’s ambassador program to include local junior clubs and schools in a significant commitment to the growth and development of the Victorian rugby community.

The program will see every contracted Melbourne Rebels player assigned as an ambassador to a local rugby club, where their role will vary from playing for their club, attending functions, junior registration days and engaging with all stakeholders.

Established five years ago, the program has been extended for the first time from a Dewar Shield club initiative to include registered clubs and schools.

“We’re excited to extend our commitment to local rugby and the Rebels look forward to taking an active role in the development of our sport from the grassroots to elite senior rugby,” Melbourne Rebels General Manager Professional Rugby & Development Nick Ryan said.

“As a community focused club, we will continue to build close and productive relationships with our local clubs to ensure players of all ages have the opportunity to engage with our athletes, coaches and staff.”

Since it’s establishment, the program has played a key role in the boosting the standard of competition across the Dewar Shield competition and has been credited with helping to develop local Super Rugby players Sione Tuipulotu, Rob Leota, Fereti Sa’aga and newest Wallaby Jordan Uelese.

“The Rebels are committed to setting a new benchmark for community engagement in Australian rugby and it begins with our commitment to the foundation of Rebels rugby – the local schools and clubs,” Ryan said.

“We’re pleased with the program’s impact over the first couple of years but now we want to extend our reach to make sure that we inspire the current and future generations of participants to love our great game.”

The Melbourne Rebels will kick-off its 2018 Super Rugby campaign at home against the Queensland Reds at AAMI Park on Friday 23 February from 7.30pm (AEDT).

Join the Rebel Army for the 2018 Super Rugby season with memberships now on sale from as little as $88 for adults, $35 for children and $218 for a family of four for all eight home games.

Also going on the Fijians moving to Melbourne, I don't really mind to be honest but I have enjoyed the spread of talent across more teams over the last few years as it's made some of the games tighter and more exciting to watch. Sure Melbourne and Quins have the stockpile and also the better systems in place across the board to get more success than other sides, but I have enjoyed watching close games between any of the top 4-5 teams.

Interesting to see most of the Super players who will likely play are with us, Quins, or Moorabbin.

Without blowing my own trumpet too hard, get the sense that Melbourne and Quins will be stand outs again this year with talk around the ground.

Box Hill are looking good, as are University and Footscray.

Anyone else hearing otherwise? Hopefully it's another good year with a number of good competitors.

Uni always talk up their chances, they improved a lot last season compared to the one before that but I don't think they will make finals. Footscray are always there or thereabouts but 2-3 injuries tend to kill their momentum in the 2nd half of the season.
I think Moorabbin will be improved, as will Power House.

Any more news about players moving from BH to Melbourne? All pictures I've seen and people I've spoken to don't seem to indicate this to have happened.

And with BH's showing at the recent 7s tournaments the players they have retained seem to be doing quite well.

If anything footscray hit their stride in the second round last season. I think they won 8 games on the trot.

Few trials happening around the place this weekend.

Kiwi Hawthorn are hosting Footscray and they are playing 2 games.
Another trial game happening at Northern and another one where Quins are in Ballarat for a game.

Round 1 this weekend for the Dewar Shield, however the "Premiership" kicked off last week. This year is going to get confusing when talking about the different competitions.

Moorabbin v Power House
Endeavour Hills v Melbourne

2018 Dewar Shield Competition Kicks-Off This Weekend

The 2018 Dewar Shield Competition will kick-off this weekend with Round 1 delivering some mouth-watering match-ups.
In 2018 there will be eight teams vying for the prestigious Dewar Shield; 2017 Champions Harlequins, 2017 Runners-Up Melbourne, Box Hill, Moorabbin, Footscray, Power House, Melbourne University and Endeavour Hills.
Rugby Victoria Rugby Services Manager Will Nicholson believes that the 2018 Dewar Shield will be one of the tightest competitions in recent memory.
"The 8 teams that will participate in 2018 have the ability to beat any of the other teams on their day," Nicholson said.
"Just like we saw at the end of last year's regular season, top 4 positions can be up for grabs until the final whistle blows. I believe this year will be no different.
"New interstate and international players coming into the competition will add to the competitiveness of this already tough competition, as will a number of exciting players moving up from the Colts competition.
"The Dewar Shield is sure to be a tough and thrilling affair in 2018".
