Brumbies 2020

I think all player contracts are out the window at the moment. We will be getting heaps seeking releases and trying to make up for lost funds by going overseas.

I think that will be the first instinctive reaction and actually not a bad thing for the game post virus and it will alleviate the financial burden.

But it will be interesting to see how that's plays out as I believe that option won't be available until quite while after we get back underway (if we can get past the obsessive club rugby / state non-revenue earning shite and form a unified high level domestic competition) and the O/S clubs maybe stuck servicing current contracts while trying to look after their "home" players and won't have the room nor funds.

I think some of our current Wallabies might be in for a reality check about their actual value and how wanted they will be.

The young ones maybe in a far better place than the likes of the older ones like White, Kuridrani and co. Those willing to take a cut price deal and look towards the future (especially those who who have a shot at the next RWC) are what the game will be wanting.

Bit of an update from the chat with the CEO and chairman of the board tonight:
  • No real timeline on when there will be a return to play of a domestic comp for the rest of 2020. It's likely to be just 5 teams (4 Super Rugby + Western Force) with the Sunwolves participation hard to sort out with International border closures.
  • For 2021 there could be a Trans Tasman comp with some Asian presence but, again, is reliant on border restrictions being lifted.
  • The players are on 'active rest' for 2 weeks as of Monday.
  • Injury news - Scott Sio and Allan Ala'alatoa are on track to recover from their broken hand and broken arm injuries. Blake Enever and Jahrome Brown are recovering from leg injuries. Toni Pulu needs a shoulder reconstruction but was unable to undergo it with the surgery restrictions in place.
  • 2020 memberships are on hold until a decision is made on a) when a comp will be up and running and b) if crowds will be able to attend games.
  • No set date for community rugby to be up and running but the National cabinet meeting in early-mid May could give the go ahead or some idea of when it can resume.
  • The work the Brumbies have done for off field and game day experience looks to be heading in the right direction with an independent survey reporting a 93% satisfaction rating after the 4 home games so far, up from 70% last year.

Do the Brumbies align their players with local clubs? As in that's where they would be expected to play if they were dropped etc?

Is there a list of club alignments does anyone know?

Has anyone heard any more news on the Tevita Kuridrani taking an overseas stint front? It may actually be great timing if he did this in the coming few years as Len Ikitau is just waiting to be unleashed.

Also just wondering if anyone knows much about how Isaac Henry is faring in Canberra? Really talented footballer and had big wraps on him in Queensland.

Brumbies first game back in Super Rugby AU is against the Rebels on 4 July in Canberra.

No crowds allowed at this stage but RA will work with state and territory governments as restrictions are relaxed.

Full draw will be out later this morning.

Is the big man Callum Mcdonald still in the Academy? He played in Runners games earlier this year, but not listed on website in Academy list. Tom Hooper has been promoted to full squad.

Blake signs with tigers uk
Yeah, compassionate grounds, closer to family eh?

Yeah I was thinking about that afterwards, it's probably not as malicious as it seems. He was off contract at the end of the year anyway, he's not a first choice starter at the Brumbies so, yes, probably just wanting to refresh and spend some time with family before going away. No different to what Kurtley did really only less important.

Yes good for Blake to get a contract with the Tigers as not really been in the mix for a while at the brumbies and off contract at end of the season so good for both parties to part ways and move on.

Well as the naysayer, compassionate reasons could certainly include the need to earn more money and not take a sustained pay-cut. Depending on what his financial obligations are, or support to family is, its quite possible he cant continue to live on a 60% pay cut, and proposed 40% cut for the remainder of the year.

Surely the "compassionate reason" is perfectly justified to just be that the Brumbies don't really need him as part of their best 23 and given they're not offering him a contract for next season they're giving him the opportunity to take up a contract for a European season that isn't aligned with our season.

Keeping him contracted until the end of the season by the Brumbies could cost Enever hugely because it could have meant he'd miss out on being able to sign a European contract entirely.

For the Brumbies, they lose a player who wasn't making their best 23 for a season that is only 10 games long and doesn't mean a whole lot in the scheme of things. They obviously save some money in the process.
