For a while I looked at Europe with envy but it's starting to look like they've fucked the goose and will be either shutting down again or filling morgues. Makes the Victorian approach a short term kick in the scrote but a long-term winner, imo.

Girlfriend's in France right now and she says it's amazing. 10,000 cases a day but the Prime Minister has come out saying they just can't do another lockdown no matter what. Bars, pubs are open, everything is green light ahead. Reporting only 10-20 deaths a day which is suspect. Apparently they're only reporting the deaths that are abnormal as in, <60 years old and require a hospital.

She says the mindset is so different, over here we all watch with anticipation for the daily update but it's been pushed to backpage news for them, people don't talk about it. Gov. is trying to push through it, if they can keep the hospitals from breaking down they're happy. So, essentially forsaken the at risk to save the economy.

They have been saying that for a while.

So, essentially forsaken the at risk to save the economy.

Or just managing the risk

It is like in the US, zero hospitalisations from 26,000 positive COVID tests for college students,

That way of thinking aligns with the three french or italian women I know in my friendship circles. All pretty blase

Yeah, we're all trying to manage. They've put a price on life and so have we. People will debate who was right for decades.

Though both our hands have been forced by our circumstances. They're not a continent of 25 million in the middle of the Pacific and we're not a small country of 65 million surrounded by land borders with even more populous countries.

They are also quite healthy with a good health system

BH's chart makes interesting viewing. Countries like France, given their first wave was pretty destructive in terms of health and economic outcomes, have decided to change tack. Hard to blame them for that. We're in a fairly good position here in Australia, but we obviously can't continue on with the border closures forever. What's also interesting is that we see a heap of stick directed towards the US in that they've had a bunch of people die. Fair enough, but those stats aren't actually as bad when normalised for population and when considering the different approaches of the 50 states in that country.

Septics closing in on 200,000, a magnificent achievement. The Donald should be very proud of himself.
There is an alternative point of view.
Firstly, recognise that America is a federal republic of united states, all of which have the power and responsibility to manage a health crisis. The President is not alone responsible for fighting the virus.
Also notable is the huge failings of some states which have worsened the death toll. For example, Cuomo in New York lit the blaze of death amongst the elderly by mandating that COVID-19 patients go to nursing homes.
Finally, there have been several important steps taken by President Trump which were effective in fighting the virus.

I'm sure you knew all this anyway.

We understand he's a figurehead with surprisingly limited powers. There was very little he could've done and he he went out of his way to not do those, as a figurehead he downplayed the virus and actively encouraged conspiracies. History will not be kind to his COVID performance.

It is an interesting conundrum, does a leader stay positive and optimistic or lay out the unvarnished truth. As we see in the press conferences is one man's spin is another man's lies

I think half his issues are down to him being briefed on every possible solution, and then goes out and puts a positive spin on those solutions

But also no governor has not received the resources they needed or wanted

The big ticket items, amongst many other initiatives, are:
* Eight days after the first case of coronavirus in the U.S. (January 20), President Trump created a Coronavirus Task Force, quickly declared a public health emergency, and restricted travel from China.
* Signed legislation securing $8.3 billion for coronavirus response.
* Restricted travel from Europe, the United Kingdom and Ireland, and Iran in March
* Routed Americans returning from “hotspots” to specific airports for screening and possible quarantine
* Provided Coronavirus testing.
* Provided disaster loans and tax credits.
* Deployed two Naval medical ships to support impacted areas.
* Announced the beginning of a clinical trial for a coronavirus vaccine.

It's quite clear he swung the Federal government into action. Those facts are there for all to see. It is his attempt to downplay the effects of the virus in order for people to remain calm that is a subjective evaluation, usually based on one's political bias.
Even two Democrat state governors have praised Trumps efforts, so he must have done something right.
