Owls played well yesterday. Were winning at the break but just couldn't sustain the pressure against a very composed and experienced west team.
Good win to Royals beating tuggers by two. The local Darby is always a good match to watch. Anyone see the game?

Anyone see the game?

I was lucky enough to watch the Royals v Vikings game. Was really entertaining good footy, could have gone either way. Think Royals deserved the win in the end with many penalty shots missed that probably should have been points. Have seen a couple of Royals games this year and both the 1st and 2nd teams looked very different don’t know if its players coming back from injury or new recruits?
The Royals forward pack are very strong, No.6 tore Vikings apart making runs through the middle and on the edges. Vikings had a lot of speed in the backs, royals did very well to contain them to only 2 trys.
Stand out players for Royals would be No. 6, 8, 3 and 9 and for Vikings 3, 11 and 10 (would like to hear other opinions?)

Any other reports form the games other than the Uni v Wests games?

Queanbeyan completely outplayed Easts. After a relatively tight first 20, the match blew out.

A harsh red card to our second rower left us with 14 for the majority of the match. The player who was tackled landed on his backside, and whilst the tackle was reckless and involved lifting, I've seen far worse get yellows. The Queanbeyan player (Hirsty) milked it well, and continued to play a strong game, obviously unhindered by the tackle.

Sarah Corrigan isn't good enough to referee this level, let alone higher. She missed plenty of knock ons and penalized both teams for stupid reasons. She isn't quick enough to keep up with the action too, which saw quote a few penalties go unseen.

Long season ahead for Easts. Some great individuals, just dont seem to be gelling as a team. Really missing a sizable centre and I believe the direction, size and experience of Jack Vanderglas.

Queanbeyan look strong across backrow especially. Stonham, whilst being somewhat thuggish, is very handy at enforcing around the rucks. Penca and Dowling proactive and all over the park.

Wouldn't pick Queanbeyan to win this year - but they are certainly going to be in the mix come finals.

John I Dent Cup Preview: Round 9
Saturday, 4 June, 2011
Kick-off times:
First Grade: 3.05pm, Reserve Grade: 1.40pm, Colts: 12.15pm
Match of the Round:
Queanbeyan (3) v Uni-Norths (5), Campese Field, Queanbeyan
The Whites return home to Campese Field after a big win against Easts at Griffith Oval last weekend.
In a similar scoreline to their previous encounter in Round 5, Queanbeyan were far too good for the
tri colours, running out convincing 57-8 winners. The superiority out wide was again evident between
the sides, with wingers Viliami Longi and Jacob Kara running in four impressive tries between them.
Centre Nathan Smith also had an excellent game in attack and with the boot. The defending
Premiers are sitting fairly comfortably in third position but with a congested ladder will be eager to
string some more wins together to keep pace with the competition front runners Wests and
Gungahlin. Prop Chris Barbaro is missing this week with Adam Hastings coming into the side. Tim
McNamara and Sam French also return from injury and take their place on the flank and at fly half
respectively.
Uni-Norths come into this match following a credible 27-15 loss to the competition leaders Wests.
The Owls dominated proceedings for much of the first half and held a deserved 12-5 lead. The break
seemed to spark the Lions into action and they eventually got on top to maintain their unbeaten start
to the season. Coach Adam Fahey would nonetheless be pleased with the performance and
enthusiasm of his Owls side, which is clearly capable of beating any side in the competition on their
day. He would be looking for a repeat of the exciting Round 2 fixture between these two sides, where
Uni-Norths came from behind to defeat the Whites 29-25. Wes Molton and Michael Powell into the
pack are the changes for the Owls side this week. Another close encounter is expected between
these two sides.
Gungahlin (2) v Royals (6), Nicholls Oval, Nicholls
Gungahlin come into this match fresh off the bye, following the much anticipated top of the table
clash against Wests in Round 7. Coach Owen Finegan will be looking to build on the second half
performance against the Lions, where the Eagles dominated possession and played some excellent
rugby to almost record a memorable victory which looked unlikely at half time. Iveni Tuitupou and
Sam Needs come into either side of the scrum, and Mick Lovell at blind side flanker for a fairly new
look Eagles pack for this match. Lindsay Crook comes onto the left wing in the only other change to
the side.
Facing them will be an in form and energised Royals outfit, coming off a thrilling 22-20 victory against
Tuggeranong last weekend, their second straight victory after a tough start to the season. The back
row of Sokai Tai, Joe Kolo and Tyson Tamihere were outstanding, and Captain Craig McMahon
capped off an excellent game with a long range penalty goal on the stroke of full time to secure the
memorable victory. Michael Brandt into the second row is the only change to Craig Leseberg’s
Royals side, which is sure on their current path of improvement, to give the other sides in the
competition plenty of headaches in the coming weeks.
Easts (7) v Wests (1), Griffith Oval, Griffith
It’s top meeting bottom on Saturday, with the undefeated Lions travelling across town to meet the
winless tri colours at Griffith Oval. Wests Coach Craig Robberds would have been concerned at half
time with the scrappy performance of his side against Uni-Norths, but they showed good composure
to come out from the break to gradually wear down the Owls and show why they are the team to beat
at this stage of the season. Captain Aaron McInnes led from the front in an excellent performance
and the second row partnership of Matt Ryan and Matt Fisher also played a big part in the win. Half
Peter Raines was rewarded for a good game with a try in the second half. The Lions have named an
unchanged line up for this clash.
Easts found the task of containing the Queanbeyan danger men tough again last week, eventually
going down 57-8. Their job unfortunately does not get any easier this week against the high flying
Lions. Gus Limaleba comes into the pack at blind side flanker, and Steve Castle and Ed Dillon come
into the backline on the wing and in the centres respectively.

disappointing effort from the owls on saturday, and a better effort from easts . their game this weekend may be a turning point for both teams

Whilst hoping it will be a turning point, there aren't a whole lot of games left.

Very dissapointed for the boys, they played their hearts out against West. A bit more composure and experience in the dying moments might have lead to a penalty opportunity a la crusaders or all blacks. A lot of positives, and some timely reinforcements arriving..

9 rounds left. queanbeyan maybe the team to beat this year again.their first half effort was the best half of footy the owls have faced this season apparently

I'll stick with Wests and Gungahlin. Queanbeyan are missing the players that have moved on in my opinion.

Depth and injuries will dictate a lot - Wests have a strong 2nd XV, and I think that this will go a long way to assisting them this year.

John I Dent Cup Preview: Round 11
Saturday, 18 June, 2011
Kick-off times:
First Grade: 3.05pm, Reserve Grade: 1.40pm, Colts: 12.15pm
Match of the Round:
Tuggeranong (3) v Wests (1), Viking Park, Wanniassa
Tuggeranong enjoy home ground advantage for a second week following a much improved and impressive
performance against Gungahlin last weekend. Trailing narrowly in a tight contest at half time, a clearly
determined Vikings outfit exploded in the second half, scoring five tries on the way to a 39-15 victory. The
back row of Josh Hitchens, James Turner and Jesse Parahi were outstanding, and secured plenty of ball for
their backline to score some great tries, including three to winger Jake Knight. It was certainly the form and
focused performance that Coach Dan McKellar was looking for after their disappointing loss in Round 9 to
Royals. More of the same will be required this week if they are a chance of inflicting the first loss on the
competition front runners. Irishman Darragh Fanning gets his first start on the wing in the only change to the
Tuggeranong side for this big clash. The match will also be helping raise much needed funds and awareness
for the Celebral Palsy Alliance, with the special jerseys to be worn by the Vikings side to be auctioned at the
conclusion of the match.
Competition leaders Wests kept their unbeaten record intact on the weekend, proving too good for
Queanbeyan 57-35 in another high scoring encounter between these two sides at Jamison Oval. In probably
their best performance for a couple of weeks, the Lions lifted the tempo and showed once again why they
are the team to beat this season. Matt Ryan, Pat Lowe and Aaron McInnes had stand out games in the pack,
and Adrian Turner had another excellent game in the centres rewarded with two tries. Alex Harrod comes
into the side on the flank in the only change to the forward pack for this clash, and Pama Fou returns on the
wing. The last time these sides met in Round 2 resulted in an exciting 32-31 win for the Lions, and another
great clash is expected at Viking Park on Saturday.
Gungahlin (2) v Uni-Norths (5), Nicholls Oval, Nicholls
Gungahlin will be looking to bounce back from a disappointing loss to Tuggeranong last weekend. After a
solid opening, the Eagles struggled to contain a hungry Vikings side in the second half and will need to lift
their intensity this week if they wish to maintain their top two position on the ladder. The last time these two
sides met in Round 5 saw Gungahlin win a hard fought encounter 24-15, and Coach Owen Finegan will be
looking for a repeat performance. There are a number of changes to the Eagles side this week with Derek
Leefe returning at prop, Will Naafu comes into the second row and Xavier Duffy onto the blind side flank.
Anthony Dawes returns to half back, making way for David King at fly half.
The Owls come into this match after a disappointing 20-12 loss last week, their third in succession. Their
task does not get any easier this weekend to avoid an alarming slide down the ladder against an equally
determined Eagles side. Dev Hugo at inside centre is the only change to Adam Fahey’s side for this
important clash.
Royals (6) v Queanbeyan (4), Phillip Oval, Phillip
Royals come into this big clash at home fresh off the bye and in good form, having defeated Tuggeranong
22-20 and a narrow 27-21 loss to Gungahlin in their last two matches. After a tough start to the season the
royal blues have shown once at full strength they can mix it with the best in the competition. They will be
confident of knocking off the defending Premiers coming off a loss last weekend and with some injury
concerns. Kyron Pitta into the second row and Jake McMahon onto the wing are the only changes to the
Royals side for this match.
Queanbeyan suffered their second defeat this season to the ladder leaders last weekend in a high scoring
encounter. Despite some good play out wide which resulted in some great tries, the Whites struggled to
contain the Lions danger men. Coach Wayne Southwell will be looking for a strong defensive effort by his
side this week in order to avoid a second loss on the trot. The last time these two sides met saw the Whites
run out comfortable 37-19 winners in Round 3, however Royals have clearly improved since then so a close
and hard fought encounter is expected at Phillip Oval.

I saw an article in the Queanbeyan Age where the Whites' coach was criticising the council for letting Campese Field go into a state of disrepair after the December flood. Apparently the ground is watered from the river and with the pumps being damaged the field wasn't watered over summer. He commented that the team has sustained a lot of injuries this season due to the poor playing surface.

A few weeks late replying FTS, but the top four will be in my opinion:

1. Gungahalin. - Strong forwards, excellent set piece. Depth through grades except colts.
2. Tuggeranong. - Great finishers, good set piece and depth throughout club.
3. Wests - Huge forward pack, great finishers and solid 2nd XV.
4. Royals. - Backrow is standout, otherwise solid. Hasn't got the same depth as the other clubs listed above.

I think Queanbeyan is sorely missing the players that have moved on in Nic White, Coleman and Stevens. On top of that, Goodall isn't playing this year (injuries, travelling). Villiami Iongi is another that has moved on. This is the first queanbeyan team for a while that doesn't look like premiership contenders. They will compete with Royals for fourth place this year.

Uni after a strong start haven't kept up their momentum, and seem to be missing a few key players that instigated the early season success (the Islander 13?).

Easts are too far behind to catch up, and really need to think about next year and avioiding wooden spoon. Early injuries (3 broken bones, and two other serious injuries in 1st grade) hampered our team getting any traction this year. Mental strength has been a huge issue with many tight games not being won, and in other games the score blowing out ridiculously. Potential is there but there is a need to retain majority of the team.

As I mentioned at the start of the season, injuries will largely decide what happens. It's my caveat for any team.
