Taylor has Fou outside him unmarked and instead of passing goes back inside into contact. What is wrong with these guys.

That was a poor 1st half by the lads against Argentina and most of the problems were unforced. Some of the same guys who played well earlier in the calendar year would not be happy with their skill level on Day 2.

This team has some deficiencies as mentioned earlier in the thread but if they execute well they are good enough to beat any team on their day.

This was not such a day.

Anyone ever says to me "hey don't kick it its 7's!" I'll just respond with "well, it works for Fiji - pretty much every time, so why not?" :D

True that on the skills p.tah you can't teach what they do.

Very vocal crowd today. The numbers weren't massive but I've got a feeling it's on the cusp of building into something big.
They just need one big year crowd wise and the next year will be a sell out.

Fiji were simply superb today, very deserved back to back champions. Some excellent results including the Argies Plate victory, the French making the Plate final, and the Spanish winning the Bowl. Also good to see the Scots getting a trophy.

The Aussies will be very disappointed in their day two but at least they can say they were the only team to beat Fiji! Lucas is going to be a big loss to that team.... trying hard to think of an appropriate playmaker replacement?

Is Rex Tapuai too old for Sevens? Just thinking he might be a handy pickup if he is not with a franchise. Also Damon Murphy from Brisbane Brothers. Wouldn't harm to have a couple of óld heads'in there. The young guys looked like they lost their way a little today.

australia is just shit at this sport. IMO cut 'em loose from funding from ARU and pretending to be a part of real rugby - if they are good enough stand on their own.

Exactly right speckie.

Lucas' backups Lewis Holland and Allan F are not at his level, and good playmakers who are not already nabbed by Super teams are not queuing up at Centrelink.

I'd like to see some young scrummie like Tim Donlan and Waldo Wessells in Sydney given a go, but have no idea if they have an interest. They could see it as a path to Super Rugby and put their hands up to fill in until a long term replacement is found.

I thought that Lucas had found his niche in 7s but he is backing himself to get a full Super contract down the track and you can't grumble about that.

Good point, and based on that line of analysis all Wallabies should have been cut loose when we were ranked at No5, lose all funding and payments and not allowed any payment until they had proven themselves.
I imagine there should be an awful lot of malnourished and indigent Wallabies if that we're the case.
Sevens is viable, it just needs proper coaching and player identification but that is pointless until the payments can compete with Super rugby.
Any worthwhile player is of course going to take the super money so most of the better players who would be in the sevens are wasting time warming super 15 benches or only used minimally.

An ARU contract should be flexible enough to allow sevens to utilise underused super 15 contracted players or call on them when needed.

The ARU is there essentially for the Wallabies , whether they first or 15th
Sevens is a separate and different game - there may be able to be some cross pollination
some people seem to think sevens will be the saviour of rugby - IMO the numbers at the Gold Coast were poor

Sevens rugby is an important part of the portfolio. For starters, it is a sport in both the Commonwealth and Olympic Games now, and it is actually getting a fair bit of publicity, particularly for the women's version. Of course there is cross pollination, you only have to look at the number of Sevens players who go on to full professional contracts in 15s.

As for the Gold Coast as a venue, it deserves a bit of time to make its mark. Remember that the selection of a venue is a two-way street, the Sevens event is attractive from a tourism point of view, which is why there is competition to host it.

Which other Australian cities would be interested in bidding for it?

The consequences of an error is 7's is magnified compared to the longer version of the game, where there is often the luxuary of time to recover from a missed tackle, butchered try, poor kick, knock on etc.

Don't write our boys off, cause they had a couple of bad games in the first tournament of the series. Remember that they beat the eventual winners in pool play.

Look at the history of the IRB sevens, the eventual series winners have seldom won all tournaments. The eventual series winners have sometimes failed to finish in the top 4 in one of the individual tournaments.
