Greater Sydney Rams v Sydney Stars Team Announcement
The Sydney Stars coaching team have announced their side to take on the Greater Sydney Rams in Round 4 of the Buildcorp National Rugby Championship (NRC) at Pirtek Stadium this Saturday. Following their bye week, the Sydney Stars side has undergone a number of slight changes, welcoming some injured players back, as well as some brand new faces.
Released from Wallabies camp this weekend, Will Skelton will start again for the Sydney Stars and is ready to come up against a very strong Rams forward pack.
Joining him for the very first time, is Balmain Rugby Club flanker Tipiloma Kaveinga, who has been very keen to make his debut in the Buildcorp NRC after undergoing rehabilitation for an injury he sustained during the latter end of the NSW Suburban Rugby competition.
Another new inclusion to the side coming from the Melbourne Rebels, is former Sydney University prop Laurie Weeks. Following a strong season in Super Rugby and making his Test debut for the Wallabies against France earlier this year, Laurie suffered an injury to his hamstring and arrived in Sydney just this week after completing his rehab in Melbourne. Named on the bench, he will be a great replacement to add some strength in the forwards.
The backline will also see some different combinations. NSW Waratah Michael Hodge will return to inside centre after recovering from his nasty head knock very early in the Round 1 game against Brisbane City.
Matthew Kenny will move into the left wing as a result of the exclusion of young winger Henry Clunies-Ross due to a groin injury, seeing Jack Macklin named at fullback for his first starting appearance for the Stars.
Jake Gordon has been promoted from the bench to also make his first start for the side as halfback. While James Willan and Jono Sullivan pull on the Sydney Stars jersey for the first time as replacements.
Coming off their first win of the Buildcorp NRC, the Greater Sydney Rams will be keen to stay in the winning circle, but after a hard week in training the Sydney Stars will make this no easy feat.

Sydney Stars: Our closest rivals are the rugby benchmark

And as much as we plan on beating the Stars on our turf this Saturday, the truth is we want to be like the Stars just as much.
Look around the NRC landscape and the composition of the franchises and one thing becomes clear: Sydney University is the only rugby club in Australia that have essentially been allowed to compete at the next level.
Yes, they’ve brought sub-districts club Balmain along for the ride, and it’s an interesting and even slightly enviable partnership.
For starters, there’s the history. Uni and Balmain happen to be two of the oldest rugby clubs in Australia, with Uni laying claim to being the oldest rugby club outside Britain. Formed in 1853 and 1873 respectively, the two clubs were entrants in the original Sydney premiership competition which pre-dates the district competition even.
Then there’s the fact that both clubs have had their share of trouble. Sydney Uni were on the verge of relegation and in financial trouble in the late-90s, which led to the formation of the ‘Friends of Sydney University Football Club’, a move that sparked almost immediate improvement, albeit through the Colts’ ranks first.
Finally, there’s the success. In 2001, Uni won their first Shute Shield title in almost three decades, and have won 30 First Grade Premierships since the formation of the district competition in 1900. Their dominance over the last 15 years includes eight of the last ten Premierships, and this year’s Grand Final between RAMS feeder clubs Eastwood and Southern Districts was the first decider without Sydney Uni participation in ten years.
Balmain didn’t exist in its own right between 1919 and 2004. At the end of World War I, Balmain and Glebe merged due to a chronic lack of numbers, and a decade later were forced into becoming the Drummoyne RFC in exchange for a new home ground.
It wasn’t until 2005 that Balmain remerged as a lower-division suburban club, after some rugby fans in a local pub had an idea. Since 2005 they’ve rocketed up the ‘subbies’ divisions and now describe themselves as “the fastest growing rugby club in Australia.
Their partnership with Uni in the NRC probably makes them the most ambitious too. And that’s fine; everyone has to have dreams. Indeed, a dream of what we can achieve is what drives the RAMS’ own ONE FAMILY mantra.
And so when we see what clubs like Sydney Uni and Balmain have achieved in recent years, while we see a Stars outfit that we want to knock off more than any other, we also see successful organisations worth emulating.

Sydney Stars v University of Canberra Vikings Team Announcement
For their second home game of the inaugural Buildcorp National Rugby Championship (NRC) at Leichhardt Oval this Saturday, the Sydney Stars have announced a similar line-up to last week’s team, with only 3 changes made for their Round 5 fixture against the University of Canberra Vikings.
Following an injury to Matthew Kenny last weekend against the Greater Sydney Rams, Jono Sullivan has been promoted off the bench to replace Kenny’s position on the wing, in what will be Sullivan’s first starting opportunity for the Stars. As a result, Johnny Loseli will pull on the Sydney Stars jersey for the first time as he moves onto the bench.
In the only other change to last week’s side, young gun Jim Stewart and NSW Waratah Michael Hodge have swapped positions in the centers, with Stewart moving to number 12 and Hodge to 13.
For the third time this season, big lock Will Skelton is also included in the starting side for the Sydney Stars after missing out on selection in the Wallabies Squad travelling to South Africa. However, Skelton will look to make an impression against the UC Vikings in his endeavor for reselection into the Wallaby side.
Head Coach Chris Malone is under no illusions that the new competition has been tough for the Sydney Stars so far, and that the UC Vikings will bring another big challenge, but he knows the Stars are capable of making an impact, and this weekend will provide the chance for them to shake things up and demonstrate how they have progressed since game one.
“We always knew the Buildcorp NRC was going to be a step up in class and we have seen this in the opening rounds” said Malone.
“This weekend the UC Canberra Vikings will be a significant challenge as they are loaded with Brumbies, but our preparation for this game has been intense and we will be looking for massive improvements”.
