Mystery surrounds the background of the Australian Rugby Union official at the centre of the latest Kurtley Beale incident, which has had the troubled star dropped from the squad to play Argentina on Sunday.
Di Patston, the Wallabies team business manager, has returned to her home in Manly after being engaged in a midair slanging match with Beale as the team travelled from Johannesburg in South Africa to Sao Paulo in Brazil.
Patston works closely with Wallabies coach Ewen McKenzie, who first employed her as an administrative assistant during his tenure at the Queensland Reds. She then followed McKenzie to the ARU in July last year, where her role was expanded to include managing the full playing squad and staff, managing the team budget, finance and logistics and, significantly, human resources and disciplinary matters.

On her LinkedIn page, which was first heavily edited, and then removed completely late on Thursday, Patston stated she joined the Reds in February 2011 after 11 years working as a "Snr Audit and Compliance Officer" with the "Australian Federal Misconduct Commission".

Inquiries by Fairfax Media were unable to establish the existence of any such body – past or present – or what function it may have served. Patston's Facebook page was also deleted after calls were made to the ARU, Queensland Rugby Union and her husband Wayne, who lives on Queensland's Sunshine Coast. Wayne Patston said he had been told not to comment on the matter. Requests to make contact with Di were unsuccessful.
The LinkedIn page cited degrees from the University of Sydney in Business Administration (2003-2005), Behavioural Science (2005-2008) and a degree from Queensland's Griffith University in Criminology and Criminal Justice (2009-2011).

Gone: Di Patston's LinkedIn profile.
A spokesperson for the University of Sydney told Fairfax Media there was no record of Patston studying at the institution during that period, while sources also said there was no record of her enrolment at Griffith University, although the institution was unable to comment as there remains a possibility all of her study was completed under a different name.
Patston was known to be a key member of the McKenzie entourage, with one player describing her as "untouchable" within the Wallabies set-up.
The ARU is continuing its investigations into the incident.

From what I have read in that article alone, I could envisage a scenario in which Beale could have remarked as to what he perceived as (or thought to joke about) undisclosed aspects of her relationship with Mckenzie.

Fairfax Media understands McKenzie was sitting next to Patston on the flight and that it was a request from the head coach – that Beale change his T-shirt for another piece of team gear – which sparked the encounter.
McKenzie had made the same request of rookie second-rower Sam Carter, it is understood, and both players complied.
But Beale, in a foul mood after the side's 28-10 loss to the Springboks 15 hours earlier, made a sarcastic comment as he returned to his seat.
The comment was questioned by Patston, according to witnesses in the cabin, and the pair argued with each other while McKenzie and other members of the touring party tried to intervene.

It was a shirt incident which led to him punching Delve in SA in 2013 too.

Let's not forget he may have been dropped for form reasons not disciplinary reasons. He played very ordinary on the weekend and he has basically been replaced with Hodgson for a better balance which a lot of people called for before this incident.
I haven't read anything official confirming he has been left out due to this incident, otherwise wouldn't he be on the way home already?

I would like to ask, politely, for an explanation of this exchange on the front page, in the light of Qwerty's quote above:

Until more is known I think the headline should be changed by removing the word alcohol. The statements in the herald and Australian don't mention drinking being involved and if beale had been pissed it's unlikely he'd still be available for selection.

We have very good reason to believe its correct

While Beale was not drinking on the flight, and denies being intoxicated, it is understood he and other teammates had consumed alcohol after the Test match – their only team-sanctioned opportunity to share a drink while in camp.

i cautioned, early in this piece, against pre-judging with no, or very few, facts. i pointed out that all we had was the ARU statement and the added piece from GAGR sources concerning alcohol.

i congratulate Matt for having the courage to print that and i am sure, source material to back his judgement.

in this matter, we should be grateful to all those who have the resources to attempt to introduce the public and facts to each other. without them, those parties will remain distant acquaintances.

well done, GAGR

Reportedly Link escorted her to the airport and missed a training session! This gets better by the minute. Yeehah
PS sounds like KB (Kurtley Beale) is only in tepid water

We can, in fact. establish the chronology from known facts once we discard the speculation:

4:30 AM - Team left Capetown Hotel

6:00 AM - Plane to Joburg departs

8:04 AM - Plane lands in Joburg if it was on time (I googled the flight time)

9:04 AM - Middle of 2 hours of transit lounge wait

10:04 AM - Plane departs Joburg

a short -time later - argument occurs.

Georgina Robinson has a telephoned in report on the Fairfax site. She says there was no drinking on the plane. You would need to be pretty hit and missed at 430am for alcohol to be a factor 6 hours later.

I remain currently unconvinced that alcohol was a factor, and am eager to hear the reasons to believe it is correct.

why would he do that?
to make certain she left?

why else does Link need to escort her which made him miss training?

Well he's probably the person she's most likely to listen to on topics such as "What you shouldn't say to the press" and "please don't take this any further, we'll give you paid leave to make up for it". There's also "Think how this'll look on your resume" if conversation lags.

He'd probably be the best person to broach these topics with her regardless of the nature of their relationship.

So the reporting is it when something like this, it was a request from Link that Sam Carter and Kurtley Beale change their shirts to another type of team shirt, when this women asked Kurtley it was met with a sarcastic response, to which she replied "excuse me" and an argument followed, Link was sitting near them and he amongst others tried to settle the feud.

In the unlikely event that the scuttlebutt mentioned a few posts above is actually true, then Kurtley is even dumber than I thought, and we could be looking for a new coach. I hear Jake White is looking for a job...

So this will now go in 2 directions:

(a) the incident itself; and

(b) the credentials/resume of the ARU rep

- mutually exclusive or not?
