Australian Women's Sevens Head Coach Tim Walsh said: "It goes without saying that we're all bitterly disappointed. The most common aspect of our game that let us down is the ruck area. It is something that we need to get right if we are to contest for Cups in London and Amsterdam. Teams are piling in numbers in the ruck and we have to work how we deal with that.

"I still believe we're one of the most skilful teams in the World Series, but in order to play our game we need the ball. We have three weeks back in Narrabeen and the ruck area as well as our ball retention will be an area of focus."

One of the Junior Jarses attended Camp Gallipoli at Moore Park on Friday night. He was stoked to see that the Australian Women's Rugby 7's team were also there. He knew nearly all of them by name, but was disappointed that very few others could name one of them, let alone know how they are doing on the circuit.

Lots of people quote how the Olympics are going to drive an increase (or explosion) in Rugby's popularity worldwide, and our Women's team is Rugby's best chance for an Olympic medal, but yet most of the rugby community wouldn't even know who they are, or how they are doing.

Head Coach Tim Walsh has recalled Evania Pelite to his squad after the 19-year-old successfully recovered from a thigh injury.

Contracted national team players Tanisha Stanton and Dominique Du Toit will play for the Tribe in the Amsterdam invitational tournament that will run alongside the World Series tournament.

Charlotte Caslick joins Russia’s Nadezhda Kudinova and New Zealanders Sarah Goss and Portia Woodman on the shortlist.

The winner to be announced at the World Rugby Awards night in London on November 1.

Aussie Women's Sevens side book date with Fiji in Cup Quarters in Sao Paulo

The Qantas Australian Women's Sevens side will play Fiji in the Sao Paulo Sevens Cup Quarter-Final after impressing on Day One at the Arena Barueri.

The Australians ended the opening day with three wins from three having seen off the challenges of Fiji (26-17), Ireland (19-5) and Canada (29-14) in Pool A.

Qantas Australian Women's Sevens Head Coach Tim Walsh said: "It was a very progressive day and like a good team we turned it on in probably the most important game of the day, that being the last one against Canada.

"We know Day One is about setting a platform for the business day of the tournament. Against Fiji we will need to be in our best form against a quickly improving and talented team."

Walsh added that the thoughts of the whole Sevens program are with Fiji. "Tomorrow we go to battle with Fiji but we also send our sympathy and best wishes to all Fijians during this natural disaster [Cyclone Winston]."

Australia kicked off their campaign at the Arena Barueri with a hard-fought win over fast-improving Fiji. Centre Emilee Cherry was at her fleet-footed best in the opening period as the Aussies raced into a 14-point lead. However, tries from Rusila Nagasau and Miriama Naiobasali reduced the arrears to two points at the break.

However, Evania Pelite continued her sensational season to date with a second half double to push Australia out of reach before Timaima Ravisa scored late on the Fijiana.

The Aussies booked their spot in tomorrow's Cup Quarter-Finals after defeating a gallant Ireland team. Despite being far from their fluent best, tries from Gemma Etheridge and Ellia Green - celebrating her 23rd birthday - gave Australia a healthy lead only for Alison Miller to evade the clutches of Mahalia Murphy on the left wing to give the Irish a deserved score. Nicole Beck had the final say after the full-time siren when she was picked out perfectly by Green to dot down under the posts.

Against a Canadian side clearly looking to overpower the Australians up front, it was Tim Walsh's side that came away with an impressive win. Superb footwork from Evania Pelite gave Australia the lead and a deft pass from Charlotte Caslick found Emilee Cherry who raced clear to double the advantage. But Canada hit back to lead at half-time after converted tries from Jen Kish and Kelly Russell.

Australia then produced its best half of rugby of the day in the second period as a three-player move involving Alicia Quirk, Emilee Cherry and Ellia Green saw the latter score her 11th try of the season. Charlotte Caslick picked up a loose ball to cross over and skipper Shannon Parry put the icing on the cake to seal the win.

Taleena Simon is unlikely to play any part in the tournament having injured her shoulder in the warm up prior to the first game against Fiji. Walsh said: "Taleena has been training the house down and really deserved her spot in the team but unfortunately for her, today was not her day to shine."

In the other Cup Quarter-Finals, a red-hot New Zealand will play hosts Brazil, France meet Canada while the USA will take on England.

Fans will be able to watch the Cup Quarter-Finals and Cup Semi-Finals of the Sao Paulo Sevens LIVE via worldrugby.org. FOX SPORTS will broadcast the key finals matches LIVE from 5.55am AEDT.
