If the finals were held this weekend, the games would be:
Colts 1:
Randwick vs Southern Districts
Sydney University vs Gordon
Northern Suburbs vs Eastern Suburbs

Top 3 teams seem fairly settled with any one of 6 teams likely to fill the last 3 slots available.

Colts 2:
Sydney University vs Eastern Suburbs
Northern Suburbs vs Southern Districts
Randwick vs Gordon

Top 5 seem fairly comfortable and there is intense competition between 4 teams for the 6th qualifying slot.

Colts 3:
Randwick vs Eastwood
Gordon vs Southern Districts
Sydney University vs Northern Suburbs

Positions 1-4 are comfortable although there may be movements between 1 & 2, and 3 & 4. Currently 3 teams are in hot competition for the last 2 slots with another 3 teams having a bit of outside chance at position 6.

Is challenging the assertion that the players were not new to the mix a whinge?

Is suggesting that the U20 selectors would be better off viewing how the candidates perform in games against tough opponents that are laden with 20 year old men and U19 rock stars rather than in a trial against the Country 20's a whinge?


IMHO that would be going the extra mile to find the odd few that might have got away or shot up a skill set since leaving school. I would rather Cheika selects the Wallabies based on their performances against NZ, SAF and IRE, currently 1, 2 and 3 in IRB ranks, rather than how they go in one off exhibition matches against Barbarian teams or the USA, Canada or Tonga.

And if you want a whinge, how fair is it that Jack Conen would have been judged compared with Josh Nohra, when Jack C had to back up from a physical match on Saturday against Parramatta, whereas Josh N would be fresh and raring to go after the Eastwood v Manly match was postponed?

In terms of unearthing a gem or two, the largely unheralded Beasts have of late accounted for Gordon and The Corporation. That doesn't happen by magic, yet none of their players seem to have been invited to showcase their shoot-up in size or skill set. Nick Makas, Ted Pye, Jack Maddocks, Will Ball and Suaesi Iosua to name but a few of the better players at the Beasties who have not been previously recognised by SJRU, NSW SRU selectors and are all 1st year Colts.

It is great that young men are playing footy, and awesome that the Country 20's team (noting that there are more than a slack handful of their talented kids now turning out for Sydney Colts clubs) gets a good challenging hitout, but as @Rugby Mum has said the lads need to concentrate on their season.

My nephews mate at Wests , Tom Sawden didnt come through either gps schools or rep rugby and as got himself noticed playing colts by Rappy & co

My understanding is that all clubs were asked to put forward players who they felt were worth looking at
If players from say Easts were not trialing then either Easts felt they were not at the level or didn't want to have them playing an extra game.

Southern Districts Reports - Round 13

ROUND 13: PARRAMATTA MATCH REPORT
After the drenching Sydney took leading up to Saturdays games against Parramatta, it was a case of will the games be played and as word came through the rugby vine that other grounds were closing and games were being postponed, it was great to arrive at Forshaw and see the ground setup for rugby and the hamburgers were being cooked.

The main field was still wet and needed a bit more time to dry so the 18s and 3rd colts were on the back field and 2nd and 1sts on the main field. Parramatta have been our bogey club and we always have tough games and we knew that we had to play well.

The 18s started the day and Parramatta's tactics of going hard from the kick off was paying off big time and the 18s looked out of sorts and their usual fluency in attack and rock solid defence were not on show. Parramatta had 3 tries on the board before Souths knew what hit them and at 15 nil the alarm bells were going off like sledge hammers.
Matt Lewis just kept pushing to stick to their structures and slowly Souths worked their way back into the game and started to control the ball and the back row started to reek havoc at the breakdown and the points started to accumulate until they hit the lead 26 to 22 and then trusted their defense to win the game.
A good gutsy effort by the 18s who lost a few players up the grades and this gave other players the opportunity to step up which they did and kept their unbeaten run continuing

3rd colts had to get a win to consolidate their position in the top 6 and needed a good performance after last weeks loss to Eastwood.
Both sides fielded big sets of forwards and they ripped into each other from the start trying to set up a platform for their backs. A contrast in styles with Parramatta taking the shortest route to the try line by going straight and hard with Souths trying to go a little wider with a bit more finesse.
The Souths style was working but Parramatta kept going hard and it wasn't until the last 15 minutes that Souths were able to kick away and get a deserved 38 to 17 victory.

2nds were on the main field and were looking to prove the good victory's the past 2 weeks were not flukes and they are also under the pump to stay in the 6 and push for 4th spot.
Souths set pieces were setting the foundation for the backs to shine with our winger Grant isles getting 2 tries on top of the 3 he scored last week and Cooper Harris on the other wing also scoring, shows the type of game played. You cannot go toe to toe with Parramatta and expect to win too many games so Souths played a more hit and run game plan.
A 32 to 0 victory has 2nds looking strong and at the right time of the year.

1sts need to win to make it a great day with 4 from 4 but it was very evident that Parramatta came to play and Souths were somewhere else.
Parramatta jumped to an early 5 nil lead which became 5 to 3 with a Nathan Mcilveen penalty goal and that was the closest we got for the rest of the day.
Whilst we were down a few players we still had 15 very good Souths players on the field, but they could not handle the Parramatta runners who just ran hard and straight with support runners each side and whilst Souths were hardly moving up in defense, Parramatta were up hard in the Souths players faces.

With the halftime score of 27 to 10 in Parramatta's favour there was hope of a Souths comeback, but Souths were so far off their game and Parramatta were so on their game, that even with Parramatta getting 2 players yellow carded they were not going to lose this game and were very deserved 34 to 10 winners.

Disappointing result and we also picked up 3 or 4 injuries and a stack of damaged egos.

This week we have Warringah at Rat Park and 18s play Gordon at Chatswood Oval. Its going to be another tough day and due to injuries 3rds and 2nds have delved into the player ranks of the 18s which is great to see these guys step up.

Player of the day goes to Lance Taylor our Colts strapper who is into his 30th year with the club and is a terrific and well respected Rebel Legend. Always 1st to arrive and last to leave and it would not be Colts without him doing the strapping.

Thanks Lance for all you have done over the years and for your efforts in the years to come! And you think you might retire, yeah right. If you could just strap a few players mouths shut before they run on it would be most appreciated!

The Gallopers now have a lead of more than 1 round of maximum points on The Corporation and it could prove to be unassailable. In turn, the Corporation nearly has a rounds maximum points lead over the Shoremen.

I reckon that there will be more positional jockeying in mid table next week.

Matthew Crafts (Randwick) is the leading try scorer in Colts 1 with 18 tries, followed by Austin Osagie and Jed Ibbotson, both from Manly and both on 15.

Eastwood v Manly @ Manly Oval

Eastwood 25 – 10 Manly
1st Grade found themselves playing their rained- affected match against Manly last Tuesday night. Conditions were fair at Manly Oval. Match started with the normal testing of oppositions. To our credit we worked into the game. We didn’t rush anything and played percentage football.

All that had been discussed and trained at during the last week in preparation for this crucial match with the players working the opposition. One change from the programmed side saw Liam Northridge replacing Rohhan Zebib at Loosehead Prop. His second match up in 1st Grade and a credible performance by him.

Across the park the team was steady and stuck to the structures and suggestions that were made by the coaches. Well done, a great team effort!
We are now back in the hunt for a semi-final position.
The next couple of games are crucial to that goal. The places from 4 to 9 on the table are wide open. We have just got to trust the systems and play as a team. Congratulations and let’s keep our heads and play ourselves into the semi’s and not have wait on the results of others.

Eastwood 7-51 Manly

Travelling to Manly on a Tuesday night for a 6.30 kick off offered the first game under lights for Colts 2nds players.

Apart from the lights, rescheduling the game to Tuesday night brought with it a number of other challengers, with a number of selected players not available and the limited training run on the night before the game.

The result of this became evident from the kick off, as Manly enthusiastically run with ball under arm, and crashed through Woods defence just too easily. The first 10 minutes saw Woods behind 0-12, although resistance was offered as 2nds went to the break, behind 22-7. The second half presented an opportunity to restart, make our mark on the game, and get points on the board.

Unfortunately as the second half unfolded, what 2nds put forward, including another Yellow Card, did not match Manly’s enthusiasm, who were able to finish as they started.

Colts 3

This was an important match for us and we turned up to play. The attitude was good and from the start the defensive line was excellent. But the handling was poor, ball security was poor and execution of elements of a simple game plan was nonexistent.

From the kick off the plan was for single hit up and then kick for field position. After 6 phases in our own 22 we turned the ball over and then spent the next 10 minutes defending. Credit to the defensive effort - it was good.
Another important game this weekend against Penrith – let’s turn up to play.

Colts 3 - 6th Place

Wednesday night proved a tough outing for Colts 3 with Manly running out victors 18 – 3. A loss that will add pressure to keeping 6th spot on the ladder. Fifth placed Southern Districts are now five points ahead while seventh placed West Harbour are on equal points and Parramatta a further two points back.

Souths play Warringah in a game they should win. Both Wests and Parramatta have games against top sides making this week's game against Penrith a must win affair as it should give Eastwood some breathing space in this tight contest.

Colts 2 - 7th Place

It was a game they needed to win against a team in the bottom third of the ladder that unfortunately resulted in another disappointing loss on Tuesday night. Eastwood remains in 7th just two points behind Eastern Suburbs and have some difficult games ahead including this weekend against Penrith. The Manly game was an vital miss.

With Eastern Suburbs taking on Manly it is critical Eastwood get a win against Penrith. Eastwood gave Penrith their first win of the season back in Round 6 and they are sitting just one point behind Eastwood on the ladder.

West Harbour who are on equal points with Eastwood play the competition leaders making this week's round another important one for the sides trying to make the finals.

Some Colts 1 players may get a run off the bench in Eastwood grade at T.G.Milner this week.

Eastern Suburbs and Parramatta showed what desperation is with wins over University and Southern Districts respectively and put some excitement into the ladder. Eastwood also showed they want to figure in the finals with one of their best performances of the year in what was an important game under lights on Tuesday.

The win elevates them one place of the ladder on equal points with Southern Districts and three points behind Eastern Suburbs. With the five guaranteed points from this round the pressure will be on Easts and Souths to record bonus point wins to keep in the contest. It should be an intense last four rounds in the race for the finals.
