Anyone who wants to take a gamble on Clarke to score a ton in one of the remaining tests may be interested in the following stats

@ Edgbaston (4 innings)
Av. 67.33 - High Score: 103

@Trent Bridge (4 innings)
Av. 28.75 - High Score: 56

@Kennington (5 innings)

I thought I read somewhere Haddin and Nevill were going to share the stumper's duties, one in Derbyshire's first innings and the other in their second. Other than that unusual selection decision every member of the touring party who didn't play at Lord's is playing here, I s'pose that means Haddin has to feature somewhere.

Quick Hands

Derbeyshire all out 259.

M Marsh 4/41
Ahmed 3/68

S Marsh and Clarke opened the batting for Australia in 2nd innings

Yep, Rogers on one leg and vision impaired is still probably twice the batsman Shaun Marsh has ever been/ever will be.

Neville is also a no-brainer.

The right decision. Whilst you do feel bad for Haddin considering the circumstances, the fact is this is the 2nd time his form has warranted dropping, he has been retained due to the uncertainty on how well the replacement would perform, personal reasons have meant the replacement has had to be tested and they have outperformed Haddin.

Certainly unfortunate but the only thing keeping him in the side was the uncertainty over how Neville would perform.

Haddin's been a good and faithful servant of Australian cricket, especially the last few years. But, time stands still for no man, this ageing Oz team simply must embrace some generational change and Haddin's time has come due to some very unfortunate circumstances. How nice was it to see Nevill keep well AND score runs? It's a shame a promising young opener wasn't selected to tour with a view to seeing who's up to it to take Rogers' spot.

For those of us with long memories the retirements of Lillee, Marsh and Chappell in one hit put Australian cricket back for many years. Then there were the exits of Katich, Hussey and Ponting in quick succession. It'd have to be one of the most unpleasant tasks for a selector but it simply must be done. Fate has helped here with Harris's physical woes and Haddin's personal troubles; these staggered exits together with Rogers' signalled retirement just might be the saviour of the Oz cricket team for the forseeable future.

Don't forget the retirement of McGrath, Warne and Gilchrist following the 2007 world cup. we still haven't gotten back to the level we were at with those 3 in the side. Add that to Hayden and Langer at around the same time as well.

Yep, that was huge Aussie D. Still recall Gilly's 140 odd in the final, McGrath's performance throughout that cup was also nothing short of spectacular.

Pretty sure we lost D. Martyn after the 2nd or 3rd test in the '06 series (McGrath, Warne, and Gilchrist all retired from test cricket after that whitewash of England). Not sure we ever found out why Martyn retired mid-series despite the obvious fact he was out of form and under pressure, he wasn't older than other blokes in the team, nor was there an obvious replacement at 4.

IMO he was overshadowed by fantastic cricketers of his generation but would stroll into our current side. I used to love watching Punter in the covers with Martyn at gully and the Warnie + Haydos combination in the slips.

Think he got a bit lost there for a while, got divorced soon after if I recall correctly and was linked with the ill fated ICL and then couldn't crack the IPL. Hope it's all going well these days.

Anyway won the toss and batting.
Clarke has done his job once again

Poor review by Warner to kick us off. In all fairness it's on both him and Rogers who he consulted with before calling for it.

I don't think batsmen will ever get reviews right. It's just so tempting to get a second chance as a batsman.
