That reminds me of a joke:-

Q: What do you get if you cross an insomniac with an agnostic and a dyslexic?

A: Someone who lies awake wondering if there really is a dog.

Coat.

It's not all about Inner West and City Hipsters. You can get a good craft brew at a pub west of Concord Oval.

There are approximately 359 craft brewers in Australia. Find out your local one here. http://craftbeerreviewer.com/the-brewery-list/

How many have you been to? #DrinkLocal

I spent quite a bit of time in the United States over the last month and one thing that I really noticed was how loyal all the bars are to their local craft brewers.

When in NY, majority of beers available in bars are from NY based brewers, same for Californian bars and beers, Texas etc etc. Sure you can get a wide variety of beers from all over the US when you buy from a shop, but the bars themselves really push the local stuff. I found even most of the 'mainstream' bars and chain restaurants (Applebee's, CPK etc) would have Bud Light on tap and then 2-3 local brews.

It really stood out to me because I feel like currently in Australia there is still a larger push to get recognition for international craft brewers, when really we have some bloody great ones in our own backyard (and I guess i'll include NZ as well who have some rippers).

I know personally I've been guilty of looking at some of the more recognized international brewers when I've been picking my beer but after my recent experiences I'll be making a really conscious decision to buy as local as possible.

My top 5: Riverside 777, Pirate Life Double IPA, Mornington Peninsular Russian Imperial Stout, Feral Brewing Tusk, Little Brewing Company Death Beneath The Tanks
Plenty of other good brews pushing for selection into the top 5.

@Hugh What did you think of Mountain Goat's Sacred Seed Porter?
Got to say I'm a huge fan of their steam ale, and surefoot stout.

^^^ I think I've got to get some.

I've had their Seedy Goat Coffee Porter which I liked but thought it was a little too heavy in the coffees.
Mountain Goat Brews are usually pretty good beers, and IIRC they have been brought out by Big Brewers earlier this year but have continued to produce good quality beers after the change of ownership.

Not sure if they still make it, but my favourite Mountain Goat Beer is their Rare Breed: India Red Ale. I don't see it around much nowadays but get one if you can find it. It is as bitter as as the Brothers Grimm's Step Mother.

Went to Modus Operandi at Mona Vale for lunch the other day. We had a nice simple pub lunch and some very good beers.
I had the layback Australian pale ale to start and the Russian Imperial Stout to finish off . And at 9.6 % alcohol I really was finished.
We came home with a flagon of their kite flyer cream ale that was finished off very early on Christmas day and have traded in our bottle for a fresh one ready for tonight.
I haven't had a bad beer from this mob yet.

Ps: apparently a flagon is now called a Growler.

First time poster in this thread. What a fine thread indeed.
Gents you should try Murray's Moon Boy Golden ale. Very hard to find. I had to buy on line and then ended up going to the brewery to get more. Very easy to drink and very Moorish and gentle on the head next day. Recommend to anyone if you are up near Nelson Bay go to the brewery, a very good day out with good meals and live music.

Anyone got any thoughts on the Yenda brews? I'm a fan of their Pale Ales - and they're local!! For me anyway.

Not particularly a huge fan but drinkable I guess. And if you're worried about the provenance of your craft beer (can't say I am but I know some people are) it's probably worth pointing out that Yenda is owned by Coca-Cola Amatil

Thanks Mark, I don't mind the Hell. I guess those large multinationals have to have their hands in somehow!

^^^ Some of the more extreme Beer Geeks are going off their head about some of the Macro Brewers products making it into the top 100 like a spoiled Year 12 kid at the School formal complaining about the DJ's playlist. Seemingly the Hottest 100 Beers List is supposed to reflect their own somewhat specialised view of the Beer world.

The reality is that this is a popular vote, and the beers with wider availability, advertising and distribution will generally draw more votes than the single batch imperial black IPA which is only available from the brewery location in Oberon. No matter how technically perfect that brew may be, it is not going to win unless it is widely available.

Voter numbers were up > 100% this year, which must be a good sign that people are demanding some flavour, and some artisanal skill and individuality in their beers. Everyone who voted for a James Squires 150 Lashes (6th on the list) is one person who has at least recognised that there is a world of beers out there beyond VB, XXXX, and Tooheys Extra Dry. Rather than lambast those folk, Craft Beer nuts should embrace them as they start on their own individual Craft Beer journey.

Nice to see Bentspoke get some recognition............

That Crankshaft IPA is a nice drop..........

But I must take umbrage in the fact that a Top 100 list of Australian craft beers should include La Sirene's saison (at least one of them).

Slightly hoppy and quite nice.

Decided to join beer cartel's monthly beer delivery service for 6 months for shits and giggles.
The four beers that came were:
Two birds taco beer
Palm Hop Select
Hop Nation The Damned Pilsner
Victory Brewing Headwaters Pale Ale
All quite good, although it took more than one for the hop select and headwaters. Taco was quite good (especially for a wheat beer). Damned worked on me - similar to hop thief 7. Would be happy to drink these again.
