He looks like a great buy. But surely they can't have bought him with the intent to play Hunt at 15. That just doesn't make sense.

Exactly. Of course 'top dollar/marquee' recruits Goromaru and Hunt will both be on the field at the same time. If you think otherwise, stop smoking that wacky!!!!

I've heard about $200k perhaps $250k

You'd have to think that the 'true' cost will be much lower. He's already brought with him a new sponsor + a number of new fans. Even if that was a modest $100k, if he could pass on any kicking tips to the younger fella's we'll have broken even!

But hey, it sure as hell beats last years marquee signing who was roughly this time last year being interrogated by the cops!

Could you at least get a beer this year?? I had a rant about the beer service at a Ballymore trial back in 2013 and haven't been back since.

At half time in the 20's trial it was 20+ in the queue for one service window. Took ages to get served and then at the end of the game they opened every window and had about 40 staff standing around with beers pre poured and no one to serve !

"A lot of the games we've lost recently have been small margins, inside seven (points), so having a guy who can kick goals is important."

RG is a master of disinformation.

9 of the last 13 losses were *greater* than 7 points (and quite a few significantly so).

The quote says "a lot" 4 games can be a large amount if you want to a glass full type person..........

What makes you say that? Akira Ioane is bloody fast. LG is not. Ioane was used on the wing. Higgers maybe but probably too big.

Maybe he was also including games they would have lost by 7 or less if they'd kicked better.

Plus you never know what might happen if an early missed kick had been successful. Missing that first penalty goal could have completely changed a match and instead of losing by 30 they might have won.

Rieko was on the wing. Akira was generally in the centres.

LFG whilst no having the top end, off the mark and setting up runners by taking contact and holding up the defence, would have a role IMO. Some of the Fijian plays are set up around that, with a strength player holing up the defender for that contact offload to make the break for the quicks.

Higgers, regardless of his size was very fast. Don't forget that Rodwell for the English side was well over 100Kgs it was reported. Weight is nothing, it is dynamism that is important.

I can assure you Akira Ioane plays on the wing.

Liam Gill played 7s when he was 18 and was very good probably because he was about 90kgs. When he played in the 2014 CW games he was about 100kgs and not very effective at all. Even his breakdown work was quite poor as he got there too slow.

They positioned Akira on the wing for attack, same as higgers for the rebels for one on one. Akira was listed as a forward and was a prop in the scrums.

No Thor, Tui or Tuttle in the Reds Trial - having them play in the U20 Team I hope!! Impact much....

;)

Maybe he is factoring in penalties that Gormaru could have statistically kicked, but the Reds in 2015 had to go go touch instead.

Still think its odd to continue Hunt at 15. Common sense however prevails with Mack not appearing, and we presume, Greene backing up 10. Hendrik Tui gets bench time. The other Tui seems to have lost to Matwijou. I like Tui but think this is the right call.

Gale displaces Tuttle or is there an injury?

Interesting to see them stick with Laloifi the Ballymore Kid. I imagine he wont make the 23 but hope he gets a cap this season, it would a great good news story.

Wecome back Holmesy. :)

I reckon Thor, Tui, Tuttle and Mason will feature for the u20s instead...do they have a game haha?

Now you're thinking like a true Queenslander. We could have won every game if only we played better and had a better coach.

or tackling and stopping the other team getting 7 points
or scoring a converted try
or having discipline to not give away penalties
or taking penalty shots at goal when in an easily kickable position rather than go for a try without players capable of scoring a try
or take the occasional field goal from 15 metres out dead in front instead of keeping the ball for the 12 straight phase without forward progress

If the coach seriously thinks that losing by less than 7 is only solved by better kicking then we have issues. And at any rate, the difference between a great goal kicker and an average one is not going to be too many points.
In a low scoring game it is only going to be a few points.

In a game with 2 tries and 2 penalties then a 90% kicker will get 1.8 of each or 3.6+5.4=9 points on average. a 70% kicker would make 1.4 of each or 2.8+4.2=7.2 points on average.

This is less than 2 points with a world class kicker.

And yet, RG continues to run Hunt at 15 in the trials. For mine, if The plan is to play Hunt in the centres then the more time he spends there in the trials the better.
