Dropping Smith is gonna bite NZ on the ass big time. Comms carrying on about the non-reviewed lbw when he was ~12 giving me the shits, it wasn't a terrible decision by any means so why waste your only review on it?

Dropping Head on 7 (a sitter, at least Watling's was in "great catch if taken" category) isn't working out that well for NZ, either..........

Straya looking at 275 here.

We're gonna need something special from Guptill & Williamson (no Taylor as he's just had the growth taken off his eye. There's a post-op pic doing the rounds & it's not for the squeamish).

That was a great knock by Guptill.

Aus fortunate Smith got a chance or two in between batting superbly.

Time to ditch Finch and Bailey. At least one of them needs to make way for Khwaja.

I think Finch is pretty safe for now, he and Warner are averaging 40 as an opening partnership and he's been in decent form for Vic.

Bailey is on the chopping block especially considering Khawaja is currently 147* for QLD. Not sure why he was overlooked in the first place.

Interesting that we've gone without a specialist spinner to accommodate Faulkner. Surely this is Mitch Marsh last chance to score runs in the middle order.

Our middle order is still incredibly vulnerable imo.

Was MM's bludgeoned 76 sufficient to keep his spot?

On the makeup of the team, I would have thought the One Day side would have been a better introduction for Maddinson than straight into the test side this year.

Yep, that was a very good innings right when he needed it.

Game situation should determine where he fits in the batting order imo. Not many would be comfortable with him walking to the crease at 3 or 4 for 30odd with 25+ overs remaining as his ability to rotate strike and occupy the crease during a collapse isn't on par with his ability to clear the pickets.

With the series now wrapped up and heading to the MCG surely there is a temptation to rest Smith and one of Starc or Hazlewood.

Khawaja should be brought in (but won't) so Maxwell and Zampa should fill in the gaps.

Warner (C)
Finch
Maxwell
Bailey
Head
M Marsh
Wade
Faulkner
Cummins
Starc/Hazlewood
Zampa

Most wouldn't pick Maxwell at 3 but considering his recent issues and his form in the t20s v SL he's due a chance to answer the critics.

I don't see anyone getting rested. It might be one thing to do it overseas but then the results were atrocious on top. At home with all that has happened this season and with the losing of 10 games in a row no way is anyone going to be rested.

Starc and Hazlewood sat out the SA one dayers and Smith left Sri Lanka early. If they are fatigued then the side is playing way too much cricket.

This is a great idea and use of Marsh's skills. With Head looking good and a player of Khwaja's ability on the sidelines i think things are in reasonable shape.

Maxwell will be left out of the next ODI squad and will need to do a lot of good things to force his way back.

I agree that his recent indiscretions will certainly hinder his chances of re-selection but the bloke is in the top 3 t20 batsmen in the world, and in our top 5 ODI batsman according to the ICC rankings.

Wasn't so long ago that he was part of a world cup winning XI.

I'm not a fan of Maxwell and have been a big critic but there's no denying he has some serious talent. Would be a shame if he walked away from Australian cricket over this latest snubbing.

Australia 8/264 @ conclusion of 50 overs

Thank you Davey Warner!!!

bowlers need to stand up but I don't see that happening.

NZ by 6+ wickets

That was almost as embarrassing as the CWC Final last year. OK, you guys are the No. 1 ODI team & you're at home but, still, that was a feeble effort from the batsmen following an awful bowling display in Canberra that was really only marginally worse than Sydney. Just too much dumb cricket & you can't get away with that against a side as good as Australia are right now.
