The Cheetahs have a tough first 6 rounds, this result will boost their confidense while the loss will keep the Stormers bunch honest. The best possible result for both teams.

Just hope it don't give them false hope.

Notice the Greek was the Varsity Cup top points scorer had a run out for the Stormers. Do you know how he did there on flyhalf?

Sadly this was yet another modern rugby match, too, where lovers of a good scrummaging contest would have left frustrated and disillusioned: there were engagement offences aplenty, and in the rare instances where we did get a stage further than that, invariably a front row collapse would spoil the spectacle anyway.

How long Lord - how long?

If he answers please ask him about the bike I asked for all those years ago.

Did I see right? Luke Watson? Why isn't he playing Super Rugby?

Some interesting developments in SA with both Bryan Habana and JP Pietersen being moved into 13 by the Stormers and Sharks respectively.

Whilst I think it's an interesting move, it also shows up some pretty dire recruitment processes at both franchises.

The Stormers botched the whole process involving Sadie and Fourie and ended up with neither.

John Plumtree would not recognise a centre if one ran right over him. He has not had a decent 13 ever since he took over in Durban and is continuously converting wings and fullbacks and then people woner why the Sharks never have enough points in them.

I hope it works out for them, but it could be a disaster. I guess Juan de Jongh is the first choice 13 in the Cape but if he goes down Habana is apparently now the cover? That's very optimistic.

Not sure why there are no youngsters coming through at 13. Since de Jongh I haven't seen anyone particularly exciting other than Sadie who is now playing for God's team :).

Whilst preseason form is little to go by it seems as if the Stormers still don't really know who is their first choice 10. I also see Duvenhage is only just back so they might have a rookie 9 and 10? Considering they struggled to score tries last year this must be a big worry in the Cape? Can this Gary van Aswegen fella run the pill? Jean de Villier's distribution has been terrible for 2 years now so I'd be worried if I were a Capie.

Not trying to lay into the Stormers here at all but I can't see where they plan to improve from last year? They lost their best 13 and still have no 10 that looks a strong option. Will Peter Grant come back in better shape than last year? He cost them in 2011 that's for sure.

I'd love the Stormers to do well but based on their scrum and breakdown issues pre-season and all the above they would do well to make the playoffs I reckon.

I also predict the Bulls are going to surprise people. You read it here first. The full squad is fit, we have more exciting backline players than ever before and there is fierce competition for places in the forwards.

Making the playoffs will be huge and I think we will just fall short but early signs are promising.

JP du Plessis is the Stormers 13 cover. Coetzee wants to give them all equal playtime and JdJ have an injury otherwise he would have played. JP played vs Boland and Cheetahs. They are playing the Kings and Maties midfield pair would be good enough to break them.

Understand Grant will be back before round 1 and will start in 10.

The biggest Stormers concern for me is Coetzee Jake Whites filosophy regarding fetcher flankers. Vokken idiotic to play without them and it wont be long before we lose the Ikeys and Maties fetcher flanker captains to other provinces.

Agreed. I've lost count of the number of times a South African coach has come out in the lead up to a game and said something like "we don't need a specific fetcher in our team, in the modern game we expect all of our players to contest the ball on the ground"...only for their team to get murdered at the breakdown in the following game. Flo turned over as much ball as any other fetcher in the comp last year and I think they are under-estimating the positive impact he used to have for them.

Understand Grant will be back before round 1 and will start in 10.

When Grant gets back is obviously dependent on when his Japanese commitments finish. Coetzee has said that in the worst case scenario Grant won't be back until round 3, and best case scenario his commitments could finish up before the season starts.

...not only South African coaches either...Robbie Deans thought the Wallabies could cope with out a specialist fetcher in their World Cup Pool game against Ireland and look how well that turned out for them.

Understand his season in Japan is finished and will arrive soon.

The more you have in the team the merrier. We do have the Namibiër Ruaan Kitshoff and at the moment it look like he will end in Vodacom rugby. Fenton-Wells the Ikey captain look a bit light at CC level but I know Helmut Lehman quite well and know he will be a good one. Me and his dad grow up together in Namaqualand and this Lambertsbaai Paarl Gym ginga laaitie is as tough as nails. See the Matie coach compare him to Corne Krige in his younger days. I just hope Helmut gets somewhere down the Varsity Cup line a WP contract. He is the sort that bleeds for his team from young days.

Bulls unleash exciting midfield pair

The Vodacom Bulls will unleash one of the most promising midfield combinations when they play their pre-season friendly against the Cheetahs in Polokwane on Saturday.
New recruit Johann Sadie will partner SA under-20 midfielder Francois Venter in a combination that could well be a glimpse of the future at the team in a few years' time, as both are considered to be talented and on track to become Springboks.
It will be Sadie’s first appearance in the light blue after making the well-publicised move to Pretoria, while Venter impressed in last year’s Currie Cup season.
The duo are the only non-Springboks in a powerful Bulls backline for the game, as they join the back three of Zane Kirchner, Akona Ndungane and Bjorn Basson behind the halfback pairing of Morne Steyn and Francois Hougaard.

This post may have something of the scratched record about it but with Morne Steyn at 10 all they'll get is tackling and kick-chasing practise. Lambie and some of the other young gun 10's seem to know how to run and pass, it would be nice to see them promoted and given a chance in South African teams.
