Hi guys saw bits of a few games saturday and ACT v Force.
Not a lot of backline skills shown by any one team. ACT no 10 and 12 were ok on saturday in extremely hot conditions.but disappointing so far .
saw some pretty good tight forward play today though in Brumbies v Force game.
just couldnt find any standouts worth mentioning yet but all the teams are getting better each game they play as they gel a bit.
I did initially think one could extract two competitive teams from this mix in southern states championship but I am wrong , selecting one to be compettitive will be a challenge for the selectors.

I think we'll see the same as last year: Very strong forward pack but less of the razzle dazzle in the backs than the NSW and QLD teams.

We were a bit fortunate there. ACT had to play arguably their most important game two days after playing the next most important one. I wonder how the two teams would have gone if the opening game was WA vs ACT.

Jooste really caught my eye in a couple of games that I saw him play at the U16s Nationals at Riverview in 2013. Pleased to hear of his development. He also showed some excellent goal kicking prowess, slotting goals from all angles in tricky conditions.

Good comment TP - he was a very mature type of a flyhalf of his age - a game manager - not a type we see in Australia a lot, even in senior ranks, and maybe his name is a clue.

Delphy - congrats to your WA boys beating the ACT albeit with them a man down at the end of the game. And since the ACT whacked the Vics I expect that WA will beat them also to be top dog.

You mentioned that Jooste will be back at school - and true, it will be his Under 18 year - but I thought that the ARU policy was not to choose current schoolboys for their Under 20s, though they chose U18s, like Jonah Placid, who had left school.

Then why was Jooste in the WA U/20 team? Maybe I'm wrong (hard to believe, I know :) ) about the schoolboy exclusion.

PS - If Under 18s can be chosen I wonder why Henry Hutchinson wasn't in the ACT Under 20s - since he played for the Brumbies Twos against the Tahs Twos (seniors) the Saturday before last?

There was talk of his coming back to Sydney; if true, it would be nice to see him play in the NSW Under 20s hit-out at TG Millner on Friday, before the Gen Blue seniors (laden with Under 20s) play the Pampas XV.

That will be an eye opener for the promoted U20 lads to play against a few test players.

WA did manage to finish the job and get over Victoria, though the scores were very close.

The ACT game sounded like a titanic struggle, with WA down 21-3 at one point. There was 1 yellow card apiece so all even there.

Lee, I refuse to believe there is anything you do not know about Australian rugby so I am guessing the schoolboy exclusion applies only to the national team rather than the states.

There are 4 17 year olds in the team so potentially there are 3 WA schoolboy players (my son won't be a returnee as he is off to uni this year) although I don't know all the boys plans.

Fantastic for these boys to have 3 years of U20's (potentially)!

I havent gone through the 14 pages, so, sorry if the answer is there somewhere, but is the draw out for the U20 Nationals yet?

HJ Southern States to be announced on Friday.

Aus U20 head coach Adrian Thompson told me last night that it will "take a day or so".

The player of the tournament was Auega Seumanutafa - WA, but he's not eligible for Australia yet. Victorian flyhalf Pat Toeta was also very good.

Nick Jooste was the only WA guy at school.

As I mentioned earlier the policy of the ARU is not to use schoolboys for Oz U20s.

In theory the Oz U20s have access to Super Rugby players but common sense comes into play on a case by case basis.

Oz U20s will have access to Sevens player Brad Wilkin, if selected.

The ARU drove the inclusion of NZ in the tournament.

The U20s will have a week in Sydney in May and play the Aus Barbarians (seniors).

NSW Under 20s internal trial @TG Milner 1530 hours Friday

- followed by Gen Blue vs PAMPAS XV @1700 hours

It's interesting that Ned Hanigan is the only NSW U20 player to be chosen for the senior side. I thought there would be a lot in the reserves as when the Gen Blue seniors played ACT A.

But with the Tahs not playing on the weekend it's an opportunity for the Tahs reserves to start in a game, which bumps the U20s out of the Gen Blue reserves.

I'm looking forward to seeing Hanigan start in his correct position: on the blindside flank, as I have seen him only as a lock since he left Joeys - and even there he was mostly a no. 8 and lock.

This lad has a future: he will be a Rocky Elsom style of 6 (all arms and legs), but a lineout specialist (and caller) as well. There will be test players in the Pampas XV; Neddy will do well to hold his own, but his attempt will be worth a watch.

Have a look at no. 6.
