Powerful under 20 squad named for Oceania Cup

Campbell Burnes, NZH: 5 April 2016

New Zealand Rugby have named a powerful-looking Under 20 squad to defend their Oceania Cup on the Gold Coast next month.

The main feature of the 31-man group, with one to be added later this month, is the inclusion of five players from Super Rugby rosters - hooker Leni Apisai, and first five TJ Va'a, both at the Hurricanes, midfielder/wing Sio Tomkinson from the Highlanders, fullback/wing/ accurate goalkicker Jordan Trainor from the Blues, and Sam Nock, who seems to be pegged as the Blues No 3 No 9, but who has more talent than either Bryn Hall or Billy Guyton.

A trio who appeared for the New Zealand Under 20 in 2015 are back, including Apisai, who joins third year Waikato flanker Mitch Jacobson and Canterbury lock Hamish Dalzell. Waikato halfback Harrison Levien is injured.

... six from the 2015 NZ Schools included, including the brilliant utility back and captain Peter Umaga-Jensen, nephew of Tana Umaga. Last year's Bronze Boot winner, burly prop Alex Fidow, also fresh out of Scots College, has made the cut.

The talented first five Stephen Perofeta, now at Taranaki, but in his first year out of Wanganui Collegiate, from where he played for Wanganui and the national Heartland XV, wins promotion after being in the 2015 NZ Barbarians Schools.

... The squad assembles in Auckland on April 24 and will play a match against the Blues Development XV on April 28, before travelling to the Gold Coast for matches against Australia on May 3 and 7.

You always need some Notta's in your Tournament squad particularly when you are often limited by a maximum squad size by the Tournament Organisers. The Notta's allow the coach some good flexibility especially injury cover, or for player rest against weaker opponents (is there such a beast at the Jnr RWC?).
At this age and stage of the pathway, players should be asserting their claim to a specialist position and be able to foot it with the best in that position, as well as having the ability to play adequately in a secondary position.

I'm not too sure how many Swiss Army Knives the Selectors will be interested in taking. Maybe only 2 or 3. The Oceania tournament on the Goldie will be a good opportunity to assess how our Swiss Army Knives (Notta's) stack up against The Darkness, and to determine the Notta to Specialist ratio that will go for Manchester.

In schoolboy footy 5/6/8 are often seen as being interchangeable, as are the outside backs. Not so in U20 footy.

26 man squads yeah? Match day 23, extra front rower, extra forward, extra back.

It'll always be tight, but as long as you're able to cover an injury with no-one (bar perhaps a jack of all trades front rower) playing out of their 1st or 2nd best position, it'll work.

Easier then. Still not easy, given 31 is tight for the proper RWC, but it gives a little bit of breathing room that I wasn't envisioning in a 26 man squad.

2 hookers, 5 props, one playing both sides, one covering hooker, 3 locks, 2 opensides, 4 across blindside and 8 with one covering lock. 2 Scrum halfs, 2 fly halfs, 3 centers, 3 wingers and 2 fullbacks, hopefully with a bit of versatility such that a fullback or center could play 10, a wing could play center etc.

That'd be my guess, given my lack of recollection on previous squads.

EDIT: They did similar last year but had an extra winger instead of a fullback. 2014 they took 1 extra center and dropped a flanker.

Very interested to see the breakdown State by State this year, given the lopsided and see-sawing tournament results.

Last year, when NSW had convincingly won 2 years in a row, there were:

11 NSW
11 QLD
3 VIC
2 ACT
1 WA

When you look at the numbers, it's really only very few who can make to the top of the pops for their chosen position.

Whoever makes it - and their family, friends and team mates back home - should be justifiably proud and honoured at their selection. To be the best in Australia in their age group is truly something special.

Team announcement for 2015 (which was made on May 11 last year) is here: http://www.rugby.com.au/News/NewsAr...d-for-World-Rugby-U20-Championship-named.aspx

With Paris and London Rugby 7's tournaments being held on 13-15 May and 21-22 May respectively, the chances must be good for Henry Hutchison to be released for the U20's in Manchester.

Unlikely he will be available for the games vs The Darkness at Bond Uni in early May.

For once, luck may be with the Young Men In Gold.

According to wikipedia, we are in Pool B with England (2nd in 2015), Scotland (8th in 2015) ans Italy (11th in 2015). In an extremely rare stroke of luck , these three teams were 4th, 5th and 6th in this years 6 Nations Under 20 Tournament. http://www.rbs6nations.com/en/u20/under_20_6_nations_table.php#JZH67oEbzclCWZ8T.97

Our games are:
7 June vs SCO at AJ Bell Stadium, Salford (Home of Sale Sharks)
11 June vs ITA at AJ Bell Stadium
15 June vs ENG at AJ Bell Stadium

Semi Final Playoff round is on 20 June
Final Match is on 25 June.

@Rugby Reg, By those rules are Joey Fittock, Izzak Rhodda, Reece Hewat, & Lukhan L-Tui considered to be NSW players?

There are quite a few U20 eligible schoolboy players plying their trade with the Brumbies and Rebels as well as Shambeckler has done with the West. The Ponies made no secret of their intention to recruit from interstate to bolster their gene pool.
