That's because it is a better spectator game. Its. Just. Better all-around

Wallabies didn't make top 20 shows and Ten may have had the lowest ever primary commercial channel share last night. No shows in the top 20 at all.

SBS had a higher share last night which is unheard of

It was a very disappointing crowd at Viking Park today. Probably measuring only in the 400-500 range and the smallest I can recall at a match there. Did the 1pm start trick up a lot of people?

LOL, It also helps that is shown in 5 cities. But if popularity was the sign of the quality of the game. Is soccer that much of a better game then the AFL and pretty much every other game?

Soccer is probably the perfect tv game, it is easy to capture everything that matters on the small screen.

AFL is probably the worst, the ground is too big and there is a lot happening that just is not seen because it is so spread out.

First couple of A-League games now complete
100k for Friday nights game on Fox

117k for Saturday night's game on One (FTA)

Both games down 20-30% on last years opening round games, and rating less on Ten than they did on SBS2. Pretty disappointing numbers for them

HAL has admitted they’re operating with a reduced marketing budget for this season launch, crowds/ratings expected to be down across the board.

It will serve as an interesting metric to demonstrate what marketing can actually do for a code, whilst there are a number of variables, most have been an improvement for the A-League between season, the biggest difference been a reduced marketing budget.. ARU take note...

12000 to watch Newcastle beat the Mariners. Pretty good numbers.

Just as a matter of idle interest, when the Mariners started up, they gave free tickets away, in numbers, for a long time, just to build up a loyal fan base.

Not quite as good as we may think. The adding was wrong apparently the actual 10 rating was 127 K and last year the SBS opening number was 118k. Fox is down a little but the bigger matches are being played latter than last year. Statement from 10 on the numbers. """" The spokesperson said Ten were “very pleased” with viewer numbers on Saturday. “The viewing was up 75 per cent on the average audience SBS achieved during the 2016/17 season,” they said. “Our coverage was No.1 in its timeslot in ONE's target market of men 25 to 54. It was a great start to our coverage of the A-League.” The next game set to be broadcasted on ONE will be next Saturday’s Melbourne derby at Etihad Stadium."""""

117 or 127 not a huge difference by most standards disappointing no doubt for FFA. I have read the actual figure is 127 but lets no quibble.

However what is interesting is statements coming from 10, indicating they are more than happy and wanta work to build the ratings [obviously its in their [10] interest]. This is going to be for me anyway [maybe I am unique] exciting to watch. Seeing how if at all a FTA network can boast support for a code, which is something we have always assumed was a holy grail for Rugby to achieve.

Just maybe facebook is more important in the new world order.

I would much rather have the job of boosting viewership for a simple, easy to understand, game like soccer, than the equivalent job for our code, mate.

We debated this a little way back about playing test matches in the clear air time between the end of the AFL & NRL and the start of the cricket.

Points made included it needed to be meaningful matches, no major competition, playing at night.

I got the following from posts on 442 sota this site for soccer on their ratings thread.

#AUSvSYR *UPDATE*TOTAL: 998k (Preliminary - FTA 5 city metro + regional + N-STV)

1 LIVE: FOOTBALL: WCQ POST GAME FOX SPORTS 501 401,000
2 LIVE: FOOTBALL: WCQ: SOCCEROOS V SYR G2 FOX SPORTS 501 329,000
