The toughest thing the ARU has to overcome is that they're not the only one selling the rights (it is SANZAR) and Foxtel would presumably need to be paid a fair bit of money to lose their exclusivity over one of their biggest two matches of the week (those being Friday 7:30pm and Saturday 7:30pm).

Whether a FTA network would stump up enough cash for that game to make it worthwhile to Foxtel is a bit of an unknown quantity.

The good thing for the ARU, at least, is that they can see how the FTA ratings go for the A-League for a season or two before the rights negotiations are finalised for Super Rugby.

It would be a big gamble for the ARU to slash their income, and persuade SARU and NZRU to do the same, on the speculation that people will watch the game on FTA.
