Does anyone know if Newcastle Grammar has a serious rugby program? They appear to offer it as a sport but it rarely gets a mention on their site.

No and don't seem to have any teams playing this year, they have the last couple of years but we're not too competitive, they seem to have been replaced by Newcastle HS in most draws. Not sure they are big on sport other than a solid rowing program.

Apart from HVGS who are the other strong rugby schools in the area? Is there a regular schools competition? I've just moved here and was pleased to see such a good club competition.

if you have a look at the CAS 2nd XV you will notice ex AICES player Pernal Filipo. he played for 2 years with AICES - the first with the u16's as a centre, then again in the u16's as number 8. Now he's a prop! Well done to Pernal!

Great Work P, but never known him to play prop though, he's a back rower by trade and very dangerous in lose / broken play. The ACIES boys will need to contain him. I'm sure Pernell will be getting plenty of tips from his cousin and good mate Phil Bradford who made it thru to Aus Schools last year also as a little know prop ( at least in this forum anyway )

Old team mates and a new rival now, well done P

Match updates from AICES vs CHS 2nd XV match from G&GR correspondent in the Rat Park Stands:

AICES up 10-0 after about 10 minutes.

AICES in again. Looking strong. 17-0

CHS in after a lot of pressure close to the line. 17-7.

CHS in with some strong running in the backs of the back of a strong maul. AICES 17-14 CHS.

CHS in again. CHS 21-17 AICES. That is half time.

Try scorers: AICES 7 (Aron PETERS) and 18 (Tim ANSTEE).

CHS 8 (Jordon IEREMIA) and 13 (Reece McINTOSH)(2).

Very good game thus far. CHS are bigger and look good when they can retain possession - especially when they can get the ball wide and on the front foot.

AICES strength seems to be the back row who are hungry at the breakdown and backs who are capable of capitalizing on their opportunities. AICES 10 (Michael YARHAM) is a standout for them.

AICES penalty shot is successful. CHS 21-20 AICES.

AICES land another penalty shot. AICES 23-21 CHS

CHS with a late try to go up 26-23.

AICES play great work with forwards and backs supporting at the edge. Try to number 2 (Jock BARRY). AICES 30-26 CHS.

AICES absorb a lot of pressure to win a penalty and hold on to win 30-26.

Final Score: AICES 1st XV 30 def CHS 2nd XV 26

Notwithstanding the fact that CHS rugby isn't what it was 15 years ago, this is still a good result for AICES I'd have thought.

I have just noticed (and confirmed) that at least half of today's starting team for AICES have another year of school left.

I suspect that bodes well for next year, along with today's strong performance (and hopefully next week's).

There is also some cracking quality coming through the u16's, especially in the forwards. AICES rugby will get stronger in 2016 and continue to build.

The camp was a great addition and it looked like the u16's really benefited from being together for some time. The opens had some really high quality players who gelled together beautifully.

Players to watch in the future from the 16's and who certainly made themselves noticed by thee selectors today are

Michael Rewitt - Newcastle Grammar, Harrison Stein - Reddam House, Max Swaneneberg - HVGS, Lakopo Esera - RJAS, Jahnneric Afele - Mt view, Liam Kelly - HVGS and many others. They were the dominant forward pack from all games they played.

Solid effort by all and A fantastic result for ACIES, first win in the opens ever and first win over CHS ever. A well matched game with both sides never giving up I think the lead changed 4 times.

Players in the Opens that impressed

10 Micheal Yarman, a solid ball runner with a solid boot didn't miss one, this fella steers the team around with great confidence, great decisions in attack and defence. Certainly makes the difference,

2 Jock Barry ,leader in the forwards, very solid at the breakdown, accurate and consistent line out throw handled the scrum as best he could props were out gunned by CHS. Winning a running battle with the CHS no 8 at the breakdown.

6 Henry Fuimaono , very solid in defence, great over the ball , hard to tackle very strong ball runner, done his job plus some.

Yes its still a great result for these lads no matter what happened ( or who cares ) 15 years ago.

Henry Fuimaono is an absolute powerhouse. He would be a worthy addition to the NSW Schools team and hopefully with the improved performance from AICES schools he and others will be noticed by the selectors. I have never seen Henry have a quiet game. Looking forward to seeing what he and the rest of the squad can do against ISA II on Friday!
