Australia Needs to get better at pressuring referees

Go to any other advanced Rugby nation that isn't Australia, and there's a guarantee that you'll be feeling the heat.

Go to England, and you'll have the might of a nation that controls World Rugby as a conquered entity on your back. Lose, and you lose the political game, and your career.

Go to South Africa, and if you don't penalize Australia correctly you'll have a facebook page made about you saying you should never referee again (Bryce Lawrence), you'll also receive security advice not to referee in South Africa.

Go to New Zealand, you will have every geopolitical institution in the country pressuring you. You will have the media pressuring you, you will have the fans throwing Rubbish at you, you will have the captain of new zealand come out and attack you in the national media (richie mccaw on wayne barnes), you will have the media outside your hotel, you will have players pressuring you and in your face.

If an Australian player gets involved in a scuffle with an All Blacks player, they might as well be put on the CIA's no fly list, they might as well change their name to Emmanuel Goldstein and move into Orwell's dystopian 1984 (some would argue New Zealand as a country is such a dystopia anyway). They are routinely bullied, harassed and intimidated. Quade Cooper has been nothing short of relentlessly humiliated and bullied in an utterly ferral and utterly despicable, indeed at times defamatory manner by the New Zealand public.

He might even have a case of section 18c against various New Zealanders.

My question is why do we let them get away with it? Have a shocking game in Australia as a ref, oh well its a game. Be a relentless thug that eye gouges, get away with it with no further implications.

As a country, we need to get with the program. We need to understand that the other countries in this game are not nice. They are happy to wage utter war with our players mental welfare if it means winning. We need to bully the All Blacks. They need to be harassed in the street like Quade Cooper is, we need people SHAMING Owen Franks for his disgusting, foul eye gouge. At a political level, we need prime ministers questioning Romain Poite's utterly disgusting, criminal treatment of Stephen Moore. Why do we let them get away with it??????????????

Malcolm "stern rebuke" Turnbull and Bill "wibble wobble" Shorten definitely need to get involved. The two Bill's will hit it off instantly since sharing a name is a big deal for five year olds. They may even be BFFs except Malcolm and BP will share a common lifestyle. The dinner parties that come out of this meeting of minds will be legendary in the 'well-to-do' circuits.

Sure we could get Tony 'shirt front' Abbott involved as well, find him a three word slogan to mindlessly repeat and he will be happy as a pig in shit.

Or perhaps we go to Pauline 'please explain' Hanson. She hates foreigners and those french and kiwis have had it coming for a while.

Fuck, why didn't we think of this sooner.

I think our big problem in trying to apply pressure is that our media really does not care about Rugby.

It would be nice if a Referee that arrives in Australia could not avoid front and back pages of newspapers showing articles about how the opposing team is cheating with pictures showing what is occurring.

We dont have a media that will do this, sometime the referees must wonder if the game is still going ahead

I know, what about we accept that Hansen's comment in the News Ltd story above is right: talking to the referees does fuck all.

Twoite was awful. He wasn't awful only against us, either. He's just shit.

What can we do about the quality of refereeing? Well there are two things, in this order:

Fuck; and
All.

Just maybe, instead of this shit, we should have our players knuckle down and start fucking people up on a legal basis.

Further, if there are complaints to be made, do it through the channels, behind closed doors.

In public, smile and be top blokes about it. "Everyone makes mistakes!" we will cheerily reply when asked. "We'll have a look at the footage and see where we can improve. Worry about what we can control" will make for dull fucking pressers, but better fucking ownership.

If there is an agenda to give the All Blacks a blowie every fucking time they take the field - and that is just opinion, not fact - then there is nothing we can do about it by whining in public.

Let's be clear: we HAD the chance to fuck Franks up, and quietly point out - again, via the channels - that every fucking official on the field and in the TMO's seat failed miserably in their duty of player safety towards Kane Douglas.

And what did we do?

Fuck; and
All.

In that order.

Quick, ban him for 6 weeks.

Why not? Ban them both. It is hard enough to defend the maul without players from the attacking team attacking the head of maul defenders. It should be cut and dried- no contact above the shoulders (i.e. no head, no neck).

Yayyy!! Now I too can be morally outraged!
The ref is right there! WTF!
Clearly those cheating Aussie bastards had a clandestine meeting with him pre game.
He's clearly making contact with the face. Quick, ban him for 6 weeks.

Don't forget the dirty sand throwing #7. Bastard. Ban him too.;)

It fits the narrative fine.
A number of posters, myself included said they felt it was unlikely there was actually a gouge.
But the rugby laws don't mention gouging.
It's contact with the face in the vicinity of the eyes.
Which clearly occurred.
So franks can still consider himself very lucky.

There's also been a whole bunch of refereeing guidelines about protecting the head and neck of the player particularly in areas such as the maul.

Should have been a penalty and could easily have been a yellow card.

The way for the attacking team to get rid of defenders disrupting their maul can't be to attack the head.

We really need to harden the f#%k up with this sort of whinging.

We were beaten by the better team, our guys need to play a smarter, harder style of game if we're going to get the Bledisloe back in Oz.

We performed badly, so did the referee. Does that mean the referee shouldn't have to clean up their act too? What a silly argument, of course they should have to get better.

I think what makes me especially irate is the above you "i don't want to talk to you" attitude. It just doesn't reconcile with our values of a free and democratic society and is completely anti free speech. To refuse to talk to our captain like that should make every good Australian want to ring up Peter Cosgrove and put the army on Defcon 1.
