DESPITE his two straight man-of-the-match performances for the Wallabies, Berrick Barnes says the birth of his first child, Archie, at the Royal Hospital for Women last month topped anything he's achieved on the football field.
The 26-year-old and his wife Rebekah, who live at Randwick, praised the midwives and nurses at the hospital's Newborn Care Centre, after Archie was born six weeks premature.

"They (the nurses) are the heartbeat of the hospital," he said "We knew nothing before we came here and thought we'd fly by the seat of our pants.
"It's been a big three weeks, with three games and going back and forward for the birth of my child, but it's the best thing you can do, better than anything in your football career."

The new parents threw their support behind the Newborn Care Centre's third annual nurse-organised Bubbles for Babies Charity Ball on August 31.
"It's a great initiative with the nurses raising money for much needed equipment," Barnes said.

Event organiser and neonatal nurse Helen Mortimer said she started the fundraiser because of the lack of funding compared with hospitals in her home country of England.
"I think we're massively under funded ... back home nurseries are usually rolling in money, but here unless you have a baby here or your baby is flown in, you don't know it exists," she said.
"The ball is about celebrating the work we do, raising awareness and a little bit of money."

Despite playing for the Waratahs in the Super Rugby Barnes remains a passionate Queenslander.
"I thought about driving us across the border so Archie would be a Queenslander, but he's a blue at the moment and will probably remain a cockroach," he said.
