Even with a pre-existing injury?

Probably only has to get on the ground for one match before going off injured to qualify for replacement. Maybe why they might be targeting Afghanistan who they would expect to be able to beat if Clarke is unable to bat.

Quite an impressive performance despite the middle order wobbles last night. Faulkner is proving to be an ace in our deck of cards, Starc was magnificent once again. Warner to cop another fine from ICC.

Will be interesting to see what the selectors do for the next match against England. Warner and Smith look in need of a rest, Bailey will serve a one match suspension for slow over rates, Cummins looked fast but ineffective, Sandhu was excellent, and we really missed Doherty tying down an end in overs 20-35. Are either Johnson or Hazlewood fit?

Either Smith or Warner will have to be retained with the other rested for the game against India. I'd bring in probably someone like Cameron White (averaged 59 in the Matador Cup) so there's some experience in the middle order and another handy part-timer.

As for Warner, Ben Dunk or Ryan Carters could be a suitable fill-in.

Considering its down in Tassie, I'd like to see something like this:

Finch
Dunk (Warner if Smith is rested)
Watson
Smith (C)
White
Maxwell
Faulkner
Haddin (Captain if Smith rested)
Starc
Cummins (Hazlewood maybe?)
Doherty
12th man: Sandhu

That's 4 front line bowlers and 3 very capable part-timers to make up the other 10 overs. Plenty of depth with the willow too.

There have been a few comments today that Australia's slow over rate resulting in George Bailey getting a one game suspension was intentional to get it out of the way before the CWC.

Given that we missed the target by so much it seems pretty likely to be true.

It's a bit cynical but it probably highlights the problem with the rules more than anything.

I think its a fucking bonus that Bailey isn't in the team for the next game. All we need to do is figure out how to do it for the entire CWC!

Honestly, how much of a fucking mullet do you need to be to get out twice in the same ball?

Some really shit work from our middle order last night. The Big No and Failey are special mentions

So anyone fortunate enough to watch ABDV last night? What a phenomenal innings. I've only seen highlights and there were some ridiculous shots in there. What a player. What an eye.

If Bailey is out, then common sense would say that Smith must start as Captain. I think you've just about nailed the team, except that I don't rate Maxwell at this level as either a batsman or bowler (especially). Definitely prefer Doherty as slow bowler.

I think Maxwell's selection so far in this series has been justified by the ton he scored against the Poms for the PM's XI less than a fortnight ago. That said, another failure and I reckon he'll be given a break.

Maybe he could be moved up the order and given strict instruction to actually build an innings?

Bailey suspension is a blessing in disguise in my eyes, he's woefully out of form and has been for a while.

Flicked it on just before he brought up the ton and can confidently say I've never seen an innings anything like it before. His timing and shot selection were insane, the Windies bowlers were made to look like schoolboys.

It did make me wonder how that field is international standard though, nearly everything he hit was clearing the ropes. Also happened to be the same ground the Proteas chased down over 400 against us not too long ago.

If Clarke is fit for the CWC (and they're saying that he's on track to be), he should play ahead of Bailey.

Mitch Marsh is probably the likely replacement for Maxwell if Maxwell is dropped. Marsh is making his return to cricket in Sydney Grade Cricket this weekend as a specialist batsman.

When Johnson returns it strengthens the batting lineup and you could potentially replace Maxwell with another specialist bowler so your bowlers then become 4 specialists plus Faulkner and Watson. Skinnier batting lineup but stronger bowling.

India bowled over for 153, Finn with a 5 for and Anderson with 4.

Not a bad response from the Poms.

Squad announced for next ODI in Hobart on Friday.

In: White & S.Marsh
Out: Warner & Bailey.

I'm guessing that means we'll see: Finch, S.Marsh, Watson, Smith, White, Maxwell, Faulkner, Starc, Cummins, Doherty. 12th: Sandhu.

Really scratching my head on the Marsh elevation, did he even play in the Matador cup last season?

Surely Dunk, Ferguson, Burns, Khawaja or Carters would have made more sense.

That selection stinks. Does he know a selector or something? ... oh wait.

Marsh missed the matador with an elbow injury but it shows who the selectors will be picking if Clarke isn't fit.

Hes got a pretty good record in ODIs.

Average 40 and Super Rugby of 77. Not many not outs to inflate that either

Discount the 150 he scored against Scotland (not a tier 1 nation) and he's scored 2 centuries in 44 innings despite batting in the top 3 all of his career. Once again discounting that 150, in his last 10 ODI innings he's averaged just 27 (that's since 2011).

I'm happy to be proven wrong and will happily eat my words if he performs on Friday but I reckon it creates the wrong image selecting players who don't have the runs on the board in the domestic competition and haven't particularly performed in the past.

He's also 31 now and had his fair share of injuries.

Bit short on strike bowlers I think. Hazelwood probably should come in at the expense of one of the all rounders (Maxwell my preference to be replaced).

Surely Dunk, Ferguson, Burns, Khawaja or Carters would have made more sense.

I'd like to see Chris Lynn given a go as well if an opportunity presents itself.

I'd prefer to see Lynn in the longer form of the game, I reckon that ship may have sailed for now though.

Who replaces Watson at 3?

Most asked question in Australia's sporting history is about to be answered.
