Gawd. Mine are the opposite. Not interested. :angryfire: They seem to like individual sports (Martial arts, swimming, long distance etc), but can't be bothered with the team sport thing. My son is only just showing an interest in teams sports now and he's 10. My daughter? Forgetabout it. She's good at Martial Arts and swimming though. She's showing a bit of interest in netball because she is ace at goal shooting, but trying to get them to go into teams? Nup. Neither of them can see the point in it and don't get excited.
Shame broer, havent hear from u in a long, long time. Hopefull they will let dad have that laptop in 2009 to give us a live rugby S14 match. :nta:

Myself think any sport is good for kids but team sport even better. They learn more lessons from it then a teacher or parent can give them.

Long time we post on this one. Decided to throw a few picture of my kid on here (Oom Lee with your permission). our winter sport finish this weekend (the kid will play on friday 5 12 minutes matches at a George tournament with a possible semi and final , saturday its rugby and netballs turn). The habit at KleinGim is that they plays the next week their rugby U13s 2011 trials to pick ther squad of 35. Then its summer sport and mine play cricket and they already ask him to start playing tennis aswell. So two sports in winter (rugby and hockey) and two in summer (cricket and tennis). He will only do this in Prymary School and will have to specialise in High School. At the moment I have no doubt it will be hockey in winter, cricket in summer.

All sport for you kid starts in the backyard

Pretty sure since we started this one a lot have happen and want to know which posters kids are full on in the sporting habit.

Not about bragging (thats what parents are suppose to do with their kids) also about asking questions and we do have a few refs, youth coaches and guys with PA (father in english) degrees like myself more then willing to give advise.

Our kiddies had a wonderfull weekend winter sport closing at George. Our U13A hockey team won a 12 team tournament and U13A rugby team beat a the SWD champions, Wesbank 22-0. Wesbank only let in 3 tries since U7 age group but our kiddies scored 4 tries in the match.

and our future rugby stars and versatile laaities:

First one is Klippies Stoman, hockey captain , WP Craven Week scrummie and a all rounder for Boland U13A cricket team. He was also pick to captain the Boland hockey team but withdrew because the Craven Week and the hockey tournament was in the same week.

Flanker Slabbert le Grange. WP Craven week, openings bowler for Boland U13A cricket team and was also picked like Klippies for Boland U13A hockey and had to withdraw for the same reason

amazing how versatile many SA sportsmen are, I know Schalla basically had to choose between playing professional rugby and professional cricket.

Schalkie is the perfect Paarl Gym example. Our kids do as many sport as possible in prymary school and pick one winter and one summer in high school.

Havent post here in ages. My kid made the Boland Scorpions Indoor Hockey team and play his first Nationals in December. They ended 6th on the log of a 11 team competition while the Boland Foxes lost in the final to the Cape Seals 3-2. He can still play 2 years in this age group and this year it was all about exposure for him. Usually Boland and WP U12s get picked in a combined Pumas team for this tournament so a big achievement for him to make the Boland side.

His team and coach

He has also been invited to a UCT / Wynberg hockey clinic lead by 5 top Dutch trainers and will get a presentasion of the European hockey. I am prety temted to send him but to travel 4 times between Cape Town and Paarl just one bridge to far.

Cricket will resume when school; starts and his aim will be to make KleinGyms U13 A side as opener and spinner.

Kids been picked for Boland U13A and will participate in the SA Nationals in June in Potchefstroom on the North West Uni astro. Cost me a bloody fortune but the look on the kids face when he told me he made the team is priceless.

Good stuff.

I think the best thing about growing up in places like Australia, NZ or South Africa is the range of sports to play, along with the conducive climate. Its funny how little I remember about primary school, apart from how great it was playing touch footy (and tackle when the teachers weren't watching) or cricket during the lunch breaks. High school was pretty much the same. I can't think of too many sports I didn't play at one stage or another. University was the same. There was something special about school sport though. Playing in a team with blokes who were usually your best mates, who you saw and spent so much time with every day.

I've come to appreciate this more since living in Europe. The sport is there, but as a kid it would be a completely different experience. It's one of the reasons why I'll move home eventually, and why I wouldn't want to raise a kid here. The amount of time kids must have to spend indoors here for so much of the year, I'd have gone mad. Also, in Germany at least, there isn't really any emphasis on school sports. I spent 6 months at a school near Munich and I remember beforehand that I couldn't wait to get over there and play sport for the school, thinking that it would be the best way of making friends. I figured they'd have a water polo, swimming or hockey team, or I'd have at least had a crack at soccer. Too bad they didn't have any school sport. No sports carnivals, no school sports teams. They didn't even have a field. Or lunch breaks for that matter, it was just 8am til 1pm, 10 minutes break between periods. It took all the best parts out of school. The universities aren't much better.

I personally don't think I'll be bothered about which sports my future kids play. As long as they are outside doing something active. And as long as its not rugby league.

Quite surprise to read this. In SA, sport is pretty much school driven. The reason why soccer dont do that well, club driven like in Europe. In Paarl and Boland rugby is obvious king sport and even the poorest of school have a rugby team. Francois Pienaar when he got back to SA was a main speaker at our Interschools Big Brag (ceremony when the teams are presented to the school) after watching the Paarl Gym spirit, its the main reason for his return to SA. He want to raise his kids in this kind of enviroment.

Sure myself love rugby but I am not rugby blind, as long as your kid do sport , you should be thankfull even ballet or rugby league. In Prymary school (age 6 to 13) its all about mass partcipation in as much as possible sport types. My laaitie was very close being picked as a Boland cricket player and forfeit it this year to give it a go in hockey. It paid royal dividends and its the sport he is passionate and like most. Spend more time on Paarl Gyms astro then at home. Still plays cricket in sumer for his school U13A in summer, hockey in winter and a bit of rugby if they need a player for the U13 Wine team.

My oldest (6yrs) is fast becoming a sports nut. He played rugby last year and wasn't that interested in the game but enjoyed being with his friends. This year he seems more interested in playing the game and learning skills. He also has taken an interest in the Reds to a small degree. My wife has just started playng hockey again and we went to the park to mess around and my son picked up a stick and had quite good skills. I am looking at booking him into a golf clinic over the June/July holidays as my father in law is a bit of a golf nut and I think he would enjoy it. He has hit me up to play soccer and do Judo as well, I just don't have the time at the moment.
As long as he keeps enjoying it I am going to try and get him involved in as many sports as possible. When he is older he can pick a couple of sports to focus on.

Laaitie has been picked for Boland Foxies Indoor hockey team for the SA Nationals from 11 to 17 December 2011. He played cricket last week for his school against Outeniqua (George), Newton (Kimberley) and an Upington Region side. Played his Indoor trials last thursday afternoon after playing a 50 over cricket match on the same day. Thought he was a bit flat but still making the Boland A Indoor team which include 6 WP field hockey players. Greast when they achieve their goals and pretty sure he'll give it his best shot at the Nationals.

KleinGim (Paarl Gym Prymary) U13A rugby and hockey teams went unbeaten during the season and delivered 5 WP Cravenweek rugby players and my laaitie Boland field hockey team. They are a very special group of talent.

Bernard played hockey and rugby, made the WP Cravenweek side as a flanker and also played last week for WP 7s side at Rustenburg.

Our laaities played cricket on the saturday in a 50 over match against St Benedict from Johannesburg. They were on a south Cape tour and have beaten Rondebosch and Wynberg Boys and lost with one run against Bishops. To compare them with Paarl Gym Prymary , they have four U13 cricket teams to our two teams. They fees are R45,000 per annum compare to our R9,000. Our lot batted first and got 269/9 in their 50 overs, bowled them out for 142. great sportman spirit showed by the laaities of both schools and myself enjoyed the St Benedict parents, upgrade my english a bit. Here are the two teams after the match

Ended just in time to go watch WP get moered in the semi.

Cricket season ended last week and only one match left between dads and kids on 25th November with our yearly farewell.

Here is a very special group and my reason for being a pasionate Paarl Gym supporter and line walker.

KleinGims U13A Cricket Team
krieket-1.jpg

They only lost their very first match and their high was winning their Interschools match against Paarl Boys Prymary with a record winning margin. In a 25 over match they notch up a score of 249/3 and bowling them out for 90.
3 Boland Nuffield U13 players and 2 Boland B U13 players in the team.

KleinGims U13A Hockey team
hokkie.jpg

They were unbeaten all season despite having to play a lot of matches without 5 to 6 rugby players being occupied for WP rugby trials. Scored 38 goals (my laaitie scored 13) and only had 6 against them. Outeniqua Tournament champs.

One Boland Cavalier field hockey and Boland Foxies Indoor player (my laaitie) and three Boland B U13 players.

KleinGims U13A Rugby team

Rugby.jpg

This very special team went unbeaten through the season. They won the Marlow rugby tournament. Produced 4 WP U13 Craven Week, one WP XV (B team) and 2 WP U13 Seven players.

You'll find 3 laaities playing in all three teams and many playing two of these teams which show their versatility in sport. Want to mention them.
1 Wiaan van Zyl who remind me a bit of Johann sadie, Rugby Midfielder(WP CravenWeek and 7s player), Cricket nr 3 batter & wickey (Boland Nuffield capt). To top this he is also kleinGims nr1 tennis player and also playing for Boland.
2 Zak Burger (WP Craven week rugby nr9 and Boland B opener cricketer)
3 Christpher Willemse (WP XV rugby nr10 and Boland B nr4 batsman and fast bowler)

It has been an outstanding year for KleinGim, its been the first time in 50 years since our rugby, girls and boys hockey, cricket and netball won their Interschool matches. This group will form a very sound base next year at Paarl Gym High for years to come and follow up on just as exciting and special talented 2010 U13s.

Cant wait to walk line next year at the High School.

At KleinGim they have this age old tradition. The U13s farewell included a 25 over cricket match between dads and sons while the mums make them a potjie on the sideline and supporting their husband (dont think that will be possible) or sons (more a possibility for U13s). This great cricket match will be on saturday and I am looking forward to play against the laaitie, always been a dream for me but I wont tell him this. Pretty sure there will be a lot of sledging involve in this match and the dads will practise in the nets an hour before the match. I dont need this net practise, to scare to get injured before the match.

Next sunday, 11 December the laaities nationals hockey starts. Played WP A & B at the opening day, Natal on monday, Gauteng teusday and Namibia on wednesday. Thursday and friday the play offs and finals. Looking forward to this.

Nationals started yesterday at UCT and Boland beat WP A (5-3) and WP B (9-2) in their first matches. Laaitie scored 4 goals, 2 in each match. Not often for Boland to beat WP in any sport specially hockey
