The Marist College Sevens team has returned from the Gold Coast having won the Plate Final of the Australian National Schoolboy Sevens’ Tournament.
Marist proved too strong for St Kevins in the final running away to a 46-0 win having beaten the Victorian school during the pool rounds earlier in the competition.
The team had one of the toughest pools and came home with three wins and two losses. It was the second year running Marist has made the finals.
Marist’s first match against eventual Cup runners-up Brisbane State High School was a lop-sided affair handing the Queenslanders a 40-5 point win. Despite the loss, Dougal Mclauchlan was able to score a quality try in the second half to keep the Canberra outfit on the scoreboard.
The next match was also a tough one for the Marist boys going down to St Gregory’s College Campbelltown 12-5. This was a far more evenly contested match for Marist, with Luke McCreath opening the scoring and in doing so helping his side to a 5-0 lead at half time.
But a spirited fight back saw the traditional league school run away with the game eventually claiming two-tries-to-none in the second half.
Marist’s third game saw the Canberra boys kick into form, burying St Kevins 46-5. Tries to Luke Russell, Tom Bodman, Joe Powell, Luke McCreath and Mclauchlan steered Marist to a comfortable win and kick started their campaign.
Their next match against Thornlie High School also resulted in a win, with Mclauchlan, McCreath and Russell all contributing to the 27-0 victory.
For the plate final Marist met St Kevin’s again, confirming themselves as one of Australia’s leading schoolboys sevens team despite missing at least three-key players.
The winners of the Cup Final were Keebra Park who defeated Brisbane State High School.
