After a couple of false starts, lets get going!
Winter rowing should be banned, the boys should be playing rugby or whatever!

Returning for Shore (crew/position at HOTR/number):
    2nd IV 1st 4
    1st IV 1st 4
    2nd VIII 2nd 3
    1st VIII 1st 3
    1st Yr10 VIII 1st 8 (winnning in a time that was worth 3rd in 2nd 8's - I know wind changes etc - just saying)
22 seemingly strong rowers straight off the bat - normally a few roughies emerge from other crews as well, so expect to see 1st 8 thru 2nd 4 very competitive.

How many of the Shore rugby players are rowing? I would assume a lot more than at other schools.
A previous post on this thread suggested that 5 Riverview rowers have been winter training, that could be the loss of those boys to rugby.

I hope that is true about Shore.
This specialisation is unhealthy: its no coincidence that there are 8 in a boat and 8 in a pack. Part of nature's symmetry.

Hi IS i'm new to this thread and I have to say i'm not sure if I quite agree with it being unhealthy for boys to specialise in one sport. I mean if a boy wants to focus on one sport, whats so wrong with that?

Because focusing on a single sport tends to occur in the context of seeking an outcome in that sport.
School sport should be about the process not the outcome.

Fair enough, I still believe it's ok but thats my opinion, hows the depth of the grammar shed looking this year? I would imagine quite good considering the result of the 1st junior VIII last season

I have seen about 10 grammar boys rowing through winter at Mosman. Not sure how they look, but good coaching down there. I recon they will catch up in the VIII

Forget about these view and grammar boys at mosman, there have been more than a few sightings of a eight of just shore boys rowing out of sydney. oh but they surely just play rugby..

It was my grip for a number of years, especially when I saw a metro north rep give up rugby for rowing. Having seen a generation of boys come through it has been an eye opener as to how boys who do not grow until 14 have a sport in which they can excel.

Yes White Rhino, you're correct on the shore boys out of Sydney, however I do believe that there was the odd boy from other schools, as I'm sure some people would find it unfair to have the best rowers of one school in the VIII during winter, and their school's best rowers playing rugby on a Saturday.

If schools want to be competitive and go sub 5:55 in the 8+, they need to row through Winter. Scotch taught all NSW Schools a lesson last year, by winning with a length plus and they did it. By how far Australian U19 crews are behind the world's standard tells a look at the o/s results by that top crew.

Couldn't agree more edgar, winning needs focus, or enjoy camaraderie at the tail end of the field

Don't get me wrong Edgar I'm all for schools training during the winter, however IMO for it to an even playing field you can't have the 8 best rowers from one school training and another school having a maximum of 2 rowers training. On your note of the Scotch college, I completely agree, they were a class act crew and really showed their dominance right throughout the season.

Yes the Scotch crew dominated all local competition and went on to place 5th in the A final at the U19 world juniors against the best in the world.

I predict this years competition will be much closer than last with Shore the definite favourite but strong challenges coming from the likes of Joeys and Riverview, Kings and Grammar

If Grammar do feature this year, they will be a young crew, as the best performing crew 2013 was the yr10VIII so, you would assume, they will come together again 2015, unless the coaches get them together this year for two shots at the title.

Shore are undoubtably favourites but I think it'll be a big year for Joeys. 2014 has always been the year of hope for Joeys rowing and with Doyle and co returning the coaching staff is certainly up to it. They could very well break the 41 year drought.

2 boys returning from the 1st 8 which came 2nd, 5 boys returning from the championship 2nd 8 and the U/17 8 finished 2nd last year at Nationals. Ill tip Shore and Joeys to contest for the title.

Early days though agree that Shore and Joeys will be competitive.

I reckon all schools will play by the rules now that the proverbial has hit the fan.

    Go Shore

Did Shore win 2012 yr10 VIII's? usually a good indicator.
